    History
The United Kingdom established a protectorate over Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the most intense fighting of World War II occurred on these islands. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence was granted on July 7, 1978. Current issues include corruption, land relations, government deficits, deforestation, and malaria control. Continuing civil unrest led to an almost complete breakdown in normal activity: civil servants remained unpaid for months at a time, and cabinet meetings had to be held in secret to prevent local warlords from interfering. The security forces were unable to reassert control, largely because many police and security personnel are associated with one or another of the rival gangs.

    SOLOMON ISLANDS
General Information / Location Geography Climate
Location/Geography Forming a scattered archipelago of mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls, the Solomon Islands stretches about 900 miles in a south-easterly direction from the Shortland Islands to the Santa Cruz islands. There are six major and approximately 992 smaller islands, attolls and reefs. The archipelago covers are area of about 249,000 square nautical miles while the land area is 10,938 sq. miles (28,446 sq. Km). Solomon Islands lies between 155 30' and 170 30'E. longitude and between 5 10' and 12 45'S. latitude. The six biggest islands are Choiseul, New Georgia, Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal, Malaita and Makira. They are characterized by thickly-forested mountain ranges intersected by deep, narrow valleys. Climate The climate is tropical, though temperatures are rarely extreme due to cooling winds blowing off the surrounding seas. Daytime temperatures are normally 25 to 32 c., falling about 3 to 5 at night. From April to October, the Southeast trade winds blow, gusting at times up to 30 knots or more. November to March is the wet season - the northwest monsoon - typically warmer and wetter. Cyclones start in the Coral Sea and the area of the Solomon Islands, but they usually steer towards Vanuatu and New Caledonia or down the coast of Australia. Geography of Solomons
This truly beautiful archipelago is comprised of a scattered double chain of islands stretching for more then 1500 km in an east direction from Papua New Guinea and northeast from Australia. The Solomons is the third largest archipelago in the South Pacific, comprising 992 islands. The country is largely covered by tropical rainforest. Many plants and trees are valued by islanders as sources of traditional building materials, food, medicine and clothing. The Solomon Islands has a population of just over 400,000. Spread across an area of 29,000 sq. km. The country is located between 5 - 12 degrees south latitude and 150 - 170 degrees East longitude, with an estimate sea area of 1.3 million sq. km in the exclusive economic zone. The capital, Honiara, approx. 50,000 inhabitants, is situated on Guadalcanal, a name known to the world over as the site for some of the bloodiest battles of World War II. Charapoana giants Extinct volcano The Solomon Islands nation scatered over nearly 1000 Islands and atolls with its people speaking eighty seven (87) different dialects. The eighty three (83) distinct cultural groups, though so diverse, are united by many similarities. The oral culture provides the most important cultural heritage.
