about Peava Peava is a typical small Western Solomons village with a population of approximately 120 and a maritime subsistence economy supplemented by the artisinal wood carving that Marovo is world famous for. The people are pure Melanesian and speak Marovo language, an Austronesian tongue. Most inhabitants are Seventh Day Adventists (SDA) with a subtle persistence of traditional animist superstitions and mythology. With the village Sabbath observance from sundown Friday (6:00PM) to sundown Saturday (6:30PM) all boat use, fishing and work in the village stops, and the Lodge does not provide boat trips or transfers. We can offer guided walking trips to the wild weather coast rivers, and guests are welcome to snorkel around the lodge area, swim, and walk through the village and gardens. While the Sabbath restrictions on activities may seem somewhat dictatorial from a Western convenience-obsessed perspective, it provides an experience of peace and Pacific tranquility you'll not soon forget. What sets Peava apart from other villages in the Western Solomons is the spectacular position - a protected blue water lagoon opening onto the open ocean and pristine and teeming reefs backdropped with Gatokae Island's rugged rainforest cloaked mountains and uplifted coral reefs with extremely fertile soils.

Vanuatu has a very rich and diverse cultural tradition which can be seen through dance, ceremonies, artifacts and architecture. Many traditions are still maintained and are incorporated into everyday life in the Islands. Within Vanuatu's Cultural Series, this se-tenant strip of stamps shows a range of masks from different islands in Vanuatu from Epi northwards. The southern group of islands do not use masks and tend to use face and body paint instead. Masks are used for several reasons, in dance, grade taking ceremonies or secret societies as part of the strong traditional structure within Vanuatu. The variety of masks is enormous in terms of design and materials which can be wood, plant fibres, moulded clay and even cobwebs. The masks can take the form of the human face or spirits and sometimes have animals, fish or bird forms as part of the design and vary from covering the face to the whole body like a cloak as part of the overall costume. The less ritually important masks can be re-used, but others are destroyed after the ceremony to retain the spirituality of the occasion. The masks shown in this issue can be seen at the Cultural Centre in Port Vila. The Fijians still retain many of their traditional customs, one of the most important being the "Yaqona" ceremony as seen in the $3.00 stamp. This formal ceremony precedes any event of importance and is a mark of great honour and respect to the recipient. The brew has slight narcotic properties and is made from the pounded root of "Piper Methysticum" mixed with water. In other Pacific countries Yaqona is known as Kava.

Island style By Liz Johnston December 5, 2004 TRAVELLERS are going back to Solomon Islands after what the locals refer to as "the tension". Near Honiara The changes to the nation's capital Honiara have been massive since Australia's popular Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands restored order and calm. Yet the traditional culture remains as vital and relevant to Islanders as ever and they happily share it with visitors. Morning
The central food market opens about 5am when the day is still cool enough for you to walk there from one of the hotels in town. You can buy a lot more than the exotic fresh foods on display. This is where traditional items such as metre-long shell-money bridal dowries can be bought, along with the traditional shell money still used in some trade. Don't miss the nuns selling their bottles of fluorescent-coloured cures for all that ails the human body. What the colourful cures contain is the nuns' secret but they've been doing a thriving trade for many years so there must be something to them.

The personal experiences of Sister Gwen Cross involving culture, education, WWII, economic change - reflecting 30 years of Solomon Islands history.
This remarkable woman spent about 30 of her 83 years in the Solomon Islands, where she went in 1923. It is an amazing story of communicating across cultures, of creating with one's hands, of fleeing in the jungle from Japanese troops during World War II, of participating in the education and growth of Solomon Islands and its people. If you pick it up, you won't put it down until you're through! Soft cover, 156 pp. Click here for illustration from Aloha Solomons
Bellona Island Beliefs and Rituals by Torben Monberg. Published by University of Hawai'i Press . ISBN-082481147X. Recommended retail price $40. The religion of Bellona Island was suddenly replaced by Christianity in 1938. The religion as it existed before 1938 is the subject of this book. Bellona and Rennell islands are Polynesian outliers in the Solomon Islands. In pre-European times, and with minor variations, the cultures of the two islands were almost identical. Both were relatively isolated over many centuries, and their peoples were among the last Pacific Islanders to experience the presence of Europeans in the region. With the arrival of missionaries in 1938, conversion to Christianity became rapid. As common elsewhere in the Pacific, traditional beliefs were ridiculed, and rituals and ceremonies of great antiquity were soon abolished. Monberg's account of the Bellonese religion is description at its best. Hard cover, 449 pages. Published in 1991.

    http://wwwserver.law.wits.ac.za/humanrts/esc/solomon1999.html
Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Consideration of Reports Submitted by States Parties Under Article 16 and 17 of the Covenant, Solomon Islands (1999).
    1. The Committee considered the state of implementation by Solomon Islands of the economic, social and cultural rights contained in the Covenant at its 9th meeting held on 30 April 1999 (twentieth session) and adopted, at its 24th meeting, held on 11 May 1999, the following concluding observations.
    A. Introduction
    2. At its seventh session, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights decided to proceed to a consideration of the state of implementation of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in a number of States parties which, despite many requests to do so, had not fulfilled their reporting obligations under articles 16 and 17 of the Covenant. 3. The purpose of the reporting system established by the Covenant is for the States parties to report to the competent monitoring body, the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and through it to the Economic and Social Council, on the measures which have been adopted, the progress made, and the difficulties encountered in complying with the rights recognized in the Covenant. Non-performance by a State party of its reporting obligations, in addition to constituting a breach of the Covenant, creates a severe obstacle to the fulfilment of the Committee's functions. Nevertheless, the Committee has to perform its supervisory role in such a case and must do so on the basis of all reliable information available to it.
