Material and Memory
Photography in the Western Solomon Islands
Chris Wright Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK Despite frequently making use of photographs in their fieldwork and research, anthropologists rarely take account of their materiality. The identity of photography as a medium and its phenomenological status is, from the outset, assumed as given. There is no concern for what photography actually is in different cultural contexts. Recognizing photographs as material culture is a way to address this blind spot, and suggests that any methodological use of them requires a more complex and subtle approach.

Introduction
Between 1997 and 2000 the Japanese Overseas Fishery Cooperation Foundation (OFCF) and ICLARM - The World Fish Centre worked together in Solomon Islands on a joint program to develop methods for restocking trochus. Restocking with cultured individuals is often seen as an impractical fishery management tool for trochus due to the expense of the hatchery and rearing systems needed to raise juveniles to a size where they survive in acceptable numbers when released on reefs (Heslinga 1981; Nash 1988; Amos 1991, 1997; Crowe et al. 1997; Lee et al.

It is culturally and linguistically diverse with at least 70 – 80 different language and cultural groups. The country is also ecologically diverse and has rich natural resources. The six major land masses and 992 smaller atolls of Solomon Islands are located south-east of Papua New Guinea and 1,900 kilometers east of Australia in a region of volcanic activity known as “Pacific Ring of Fire”. The main chain of Islands in the north are Choisuel, Isabel and Malaita and running parallel, New Georgia, Guadalcanal and Makira in the south. The islands have a collective land area of nearly30,000 sq. km distributed over some 1,280,000 square kilometers of sea. Many of these islands are covered with dense tropical rainforests

Solomon Islands seek agricultural support from Vanuatu
    By The Ni-Vanuatu
Posted Saturday, March 19, 2005 The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Honourable Alfred Sasako from the Solomon Islands along with a high level delegation have met with the Acting Prime Minister Mr Sato Kilman and Minister responsible for Agriculture, Quarantine, Forestry and Fisheries in Vanuatu Mr Barak Sope to discuss ways in which the Vanuatu Government can assist the Solomon Islands with its cattle Industry. The weeklong visit to Vanuatu has resulted in a framework agreement for co-operation between the two countries in relation to Agriculture. The reason for the visit is to try and revive the number of cattle herds in the Solomon Islands, which has dropped to 5000 during the civil unrest from the previously 13000 cattle. Speaking to the Ni-Vanuatu while in Port Vila, Minister Alfred Sasako stated that they are here in Vanuatu to seek help from the Vanuatu Government through the experience Vanuatu has with its cattle Industry, and perhaps Vanuatu can help in recovering the stock lost during the civil unrest.

    The history of diversity
The Pioneers of Island Melanesia project seeks to investigate the evolutionary history of the remarkable linguistic, cultural and genetic diversity exhibited by Island Melanesian populations. There are about 200 different languages in this area of the world. Some are part of the Oceanic sub-branch of the Austronesian family, and are thought to have entered the region 3500 years ago with the appearance of an archaeological culture known as Lapita. Others are currently classified as belonging to the unrelated and poorly understood East Papuan group, perhaps deriving from languages spoken by pre-Lapita populations living in these islands for the previous 40,000 years. A great deal of variation in material culture, social and technological practice accompanies the linguistic diversity. We know very little about how this was generated. In order to understand the prehistory of this region we need to explain the way in which populations interacted and diversity was generated and maintained. This involves identifying and analysing the nature of boundaries and affinities in language and material culture. One aspect of this is determining an answer to the following question:

    http://www.janesoceania.com/
Jane Resture's Oceania Page was developed to present and highlight an extended range of material in conjunction with Jane's Oceania Home Page . In doing this, it will allow the visitor to readily access information about the Pacific Islands. As the sun rises over the vast expanse of Oceania, the daily lives of many of the people of Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia (including the Polynesian nation of Hawai'i ) go on as they have for thousands of years. The fishermen are already at sea; the toddy cutters are already at work and the men and women are working in their gardens. The singing of traditional and contemporary songs can be heard all around from the early morning, until the evenings come alive right through until late at night. It is this love of traditional singing passed from generation to generation that binds many islanders together and forms the basis of much of island cultural heritage and in particular dancing. Both the songs and the dance are unique and their performance tells the stories of life and love in a manner that consumes both the dancers and the audience. The traditional life of the people of Oceania is basically uncomplicated. They are normally happy, highly intelligent, kind, generous and loving people who have inherited a culture that is ancient, complex, diverse, very functional and beautiful. Let us hope that through these Web pages, visitors will be able to enjoy our relaxed and happy lifestyle as well as our rich and complex cultural heritage.

The Solomon Islands have been devastated by Australian and Asian logging companies; which "have swept through the Solomon Islands, leaving a trail of disintegrating communities, flattened and degraded forests and silted coral reefs from runoff of exposed fragile soils." In contrast, the eco-timber production detailed below is "managed in a way which causes minimal damage to the forests", allowing local communities to "manage, maintain and market their own natural resources in sustainable ways while protecting their own environment and culture." The report below highlights the triumphant first export of eco-timber to Australia from the marvelous Marovo Lagoon area in the western Solomon Islands.

    History
The United Kingdom established a protectorate over Solomon Islands in the 1890s. Some of the most intense fighting of World War II occurred on these islands. Self-government was achieved in 1976 and independence was granted on July 7, 1978. Current issues include corruption, land relations, government deficits, deforestation, and malaria control. Continuing civil unrest led to an almost complete breakdown in normal activity: civil servants remained unpaid for months at a time, and cabinet meetings had to be held in secret to prevent local warlords from interfering. The security forces were unable to reassert control, largely because many police and security personnel are associated with one or another of the rival gangs.
