The 150 km long lagoon is bounded on the south-western side by the south-eastern portion of New Georgia Island and by Vangunu Island. The southern end is bounded by Gatokae Island. These islands are of volcanic origin. A complex and unique coral barrier reef bounds the lagoon on the northeastern side, from the wider southern section to the narrow northern section.

The Nguzunguzu is an icon of the headhunting days. Placed at the bow of the war canoe the 'human' figure either held a carving of :
  • a human head for success in headhunting, or a bird for good navigation and safe passage.
Many custom ("kastom") shrines to ancestors are evident today. Most contain skulls of revered Chiefs or headhunters, together with kastom stone-money and other charms or tokens.

Composed of rugged volcanic islands and tiny low-lying coral atolls, the Solomon Islands archipelago is the third largest in the South Pacific. The 992 islands that make up the Solomon Islands lie south-east of Papua New Guinea, covering a total area of 28,450 sq km. With soaring mountain peaks, dense tropical rainforest, cascading waterfalls, palm-fringed beaches and traditional villages, the Solomon Islands are known for their unspoilt beauty and relaxed pace of life. The group's capital, Honiara , is the gateway to the Solomons, and is located on Guadalcanal Island
The Solomon Islands have a world-wide reputation for superb diving, and the clear waters, with their spectacular variety of marine life, offer wonderful opportunities for snorkelling, game fishing, cruising, sea kayaking and sailing. The Solomon Islands were the site of fierce fighting between Japan and the allies during World War II, and there are sunken battleships and other military relics for history buffs to explore. 'Island hopping' is a great way to experience the outlying provinces, which include Western, Malaita, Temotu, Makir, Central, Isabel, Choiseul, and Rennell and Bellona.
Take a travel holiday/vacation to the Solomon Islands and discover the third largest archipelago in the South Pacific.

Solomon Islands History and Culture
History The Solomon Islands were visited and named in 1568 by the Spanish navigator Alvaro de Mendana de Neira. The northernmost islands of the group were explored in 1768 by Louis Antoine de Bougainville, for whom the island of Bougainville is named. Germany established control over the northern Solomons in 1885, but in 1900 it transferred these islands, except Bougainville and Buka, to the British, who had declared a protectorate over the central and southern Solomons in 1893.

Solomon Islands Introduction
In 1893, Britain made the southern Solomon Islands a protectorate. Other islands were added to the group, including some ceded to Britain by Germany. The Solomon Islands were occupied by the Japanese during World War II. Following the war, internal self-government was established in 1976, and independence from the UK came two years later. Current issues include government deficits, deforestation, and malaria control.

An interview with Ian Aujare
World's largest open-pit tin mine, Ariquemes, Rondonia, Brazil
From the British colonial occupation to World War II battles, the Solomon Islands have endured many waves of powerful, uninvited and exploitative guests. The most recent are Malaysian-owned logging corporations, which are behind the massive deforestation of the nation. These foreign firms stand accused of everything from desecrating sacred sites to soil erosion to the pollution of the sea and local water supply. Solomon Islander Ian Aujare is an organizer for the Zazao Environmental Rights Organization which is working in Santa Isabel Province to address the grave environmental impact there of the globalized logging industry. He recently addressed the United Nations during the historic first session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues. Dance troup preparing for hotel performance INTRODUCTION The Solomon Islands, a country in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Papua New Guinea, has the potential to be more involved in nature-based sustainable tourism, as it has many attractive natural, historical, and cultural landmarks and has not developed mass tourism. Nonetheless, there are many challenges facing the people of these breathtaking tropical islands, in capitalizing on an ecotourism model. DESCRIPTION OF THE SOLOMON ISLANDS The country consists of 992 islands and is the third largest archipelago in the South Pacific. The islands were formed approximately 25 million years ago by volcanic activity, which makes the geomorphology of the area dramatically interesting. Rainforests and coral reefs abound, as well as a unique culture. The Solomon Islands is a developing country with limited infrastructure - outside the capital, Honiara, life is very simple.

The anthropological study and doctoral dissertation, Tradition, Trade and Woodcarving in Solomon Islands Images of tropical paradise islands as related to my study are greatly devalued by the current ethnic conflict and civil war taking place in Solomon Islands, especially in the national capital Honiara and its surroundings. This conflict centres particularly between the peoples of Malaita and Guadalcanal Islands and seriously threatens the very existence of the Solomon Islands state in its present form. From this perspective, my attempt at writing a study that extends to the present day seems to have failed. The conflict has transferred the ethnographic present of the study into ethnographic past, because the present-day Solomon Islands society has been fundamentally altered since late 1998, when the conflict began to escalate. The current situation in the country remains chaotic in spite of the Townsville Peace Agreement (15.10.2000) between the principal warring parties, Malaita and Guadalcanal, which has until today been unable to restore the civil society in the country.

    Material and Memory
Photography in the Western Solomon Islands
Chris Wright Goldsmiths College, University of London, UK Despite frequently making use of photographs in their fieldwork and research, anthropologists rarely take account of their materiality. The identity of photography as a medium and its phenomenological status is, from the outset, assumed as given. There is no concern for what photography actually is in different cultural contexts. Recognizing photographs as material culture is a way to address this blind spot, and suggests that any methodological use of them requires a more complex and subtle approach.
