of Solomon Islands
Background:
The Solomon Islands consist of six major and approximately 900 smaller volcanic islands, coral atolls and reefs, more than 300 of them are inhabited. They stretch about 900 miles in a south-easterly direction from Papau New Guinea toward Fiji. The former UK protectorate, established in the 1890s, is one of the poorest countries in the South Pacific; 85 percent of the country's population live in isolated rural villages on undeveloped outer islands.
Self-government was achieved in 1976 followed by independence in 1978.

adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; The modern nation of the Solomon Islands is an amalgamation of two archipelagos, instigated by the British in the last years of the 19th century, and marking the high point of imperial rivalry in the Pacific between the major European powers. The northern group had originally been claimed by the Spanish in the 16th century, was then annexed by the Germans, and finally ceded to the British in exchange for part of the Samoan island group. The British already controlled the southern Solomon group, and administered the pair together as the British Solomon Islands Protectorate. Apart from a brief period of Japanese occupation during World War II, the Solomon Islands remained under British rule until the 1970s. Self-government was granted in 1976 and full independence was achieved two years later.

THE SOLOMON ISLANDS
The Solomons are only three hours flying time from Australia, yet receive less than 10,000 tourists per year, many of them divers. The country has shied away from mass tourism and sprawling luxury resorts in favour of small-scale ecotourism facilities run by local operators and village communities. Ecotourism in the Solomons focuses on the unspoiled natural environment (both above and below the waterline) and the age-old Island cultures.
The Solomon Islanders are a peaceful nation enjoying a low crime rate. (The main precaution visitors need to take is a dose of anti-malaria tablets). The people are mainly Melanesian and number around half a million. Since gaining independence from Britain in 1977, the country has been governed democratically by a Westminster-style parliament with 50 members. Ninety percent of the people still lead subsistence lifestyles in rural villages on the dozen or so larger, mountainous islands. Hundreds of smaller islands lie uninhabited.
The capital, Honiara, is a bustling industrial town of some 50,000 residents, and serves as a jumping-off point for travellers venturing out to sample the attractions of the various island provinces. Divers tend to head for the Western Province, where reefs are pristine and plenteous and the sunken remains of WW2 ships and aircraft remain undisturbed in shallow waters. Cultural tourists are well catered for in Malaita, which still has isolated bush villages virtually unchanged since last century. Brides are still paid for with shell money and pigs, and stories of magic men and giants abound.

The first Europeans to visit the Islands were the Spanish with Alvaro de Mendana naming them the Solomons. He also named the Islands of Santa Isabel, Guadalcanal and San Cristobal. The Solomon Islands Group has an abundance of golden beaches fringed with palm trees, translucent blue waters, spectacular coral reefs and colourful marine life. The Solomons are located south east of Papua New Guinea and only three hours by air from Australia. The islands are covered in tropical rainforest and their steep hilly slopes are interspersed with swift flowing creeks, waterfalls and peaceful lagoons. The people of the Solomons still practise a traditional way of life, preferring to respect the old customs and traditions, maintaining and preserving their beautiful unspoiled environment. Solomon Islands dancers CAPITALS AND MAJOR CENTRES The Solomon Islands are made up of more than 990 islands, which together cover a land mass of 28,000 square kilometres. The main islands are Choiseul, Guadalcanal, Santa Isabel, San Cristobal, Malaita and New Georgia.

The Dollar Rules! By Dr. John Roughan Our politicians are currently bowing down to the almighty dollar as they have never done in the past. Poison from Taiwan is coming to the Solomons because the nation desperately needs money. Disease, pollution, dirty and deadly things are coming to our country because we need the almighty dollar. We willingly import death to our own people to get our hands on the almighty dollar.
Last week our elected leaders, Cabinet members of Solomon Islands government, sworn to up hold the nation's constitution, to defend the country, are determined to import rubbish which will kill our people, make them sick all because we need money. When the cabinet minister was reminded that the technical papers written by experts show that what we would get is poison, death and sickness, the response was "Leave the studies first time! We'll import the toxic waste and worry about the future behind!"
The nation's highest officials have now given a completely new meaning to the word development. It's acceptable into their terms to poison land, contaminate water, destroy reef and destroy life so long as one promises the villagers who will be destroyed schools, clinics, roads and jobs behind. The nation, through its misguided thinking to import toxic waste, has become the laughing stock of the Pacific and a warning flag has been raised for donor friends and reduce investor confidence.
