CSP systems use reflective materials that concentrate the sun's heat energy to drive a generator that produces electricity.
PV systems use semiconductor materials that convert sunlight directly to electricity.
Solar collectors absorb the sun's energy to provide low-temperature heat used directly for hot water or space heating for residential or commercial buildings.
Parabolic collectors focus sunlight into a fiber optic system to illuminate building interiors with sunlight. Welcome to the Web site for the Solar Energy Technologies program, one of 11 programs within the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. We focus on developing solar energy technologies to power our world. We are motivated by a belief that science and technology, guided by purpose and vision, can deliver new energy resources that are clean, reliable, and secure. The sun is the primary source for most forms of energy found on Earth. Solar energy is clean, abundant, widespread, and renewable. Various technologies capture this solar energy, concentrate it, store it, and convert it into other useful forms of energy:

Run on behalf of the DTI the goal of the Energy Saving Trust's Solar PV programme is to create a long-term, sustained and viable market for solar photovoltaics . The funding, available to a wide audience, will make the technology an attractive investment for domestic to large scale projects.
Solar PV applications fall into two categories:
  • Bolt-on systems literally bolt onto the existing building (on top of roof tiles or vertical fa§ade); Integrated systems replace roof tiles with PV tiles, or existing external cladding materials with PV cladding.

Technology, Manufacturing, and Market Trends in the U.S. and International Photovoltaics Industry
    by Peter Holihan
    Introduction
Figure 1. Decline in Photovoltaic Module Prices, 1975-1998 In 1954, Bell Laboratories researchers announced the development of a silicon solar cell with a 4.5-percent energy efficiency, sparking photovoltaic (PV) cell development that has progressed from space applications in the late 1950s to terrestrial applications today. Over this period, research and development have resulted in lower prices for solar cells and modules ( Figure 1 ) and higher efficiency. U.S.-based photovoltaic manufacturers' development efforts have benefitted from a partnership with the Federal government. Similar partnerships at the State level have also been beneficial. Additionally, rising electricity prices and an increase in the cost of building new generation, transmission, and distribution capacity have had a positive impact on photovoltaic system economics and sales. Also during this period, photovoltaic system sales have expanded as a solution to remote distributed generation require- ments. In such markets, photovoltaic systems often prove to be cost effective when compared to the common distributed generation alternative, diesel generators, which may be high priced because of the cost of transporting fuel to remote regions.

    Basics
Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House roof, and offered tax credits to anyone who purchased solar energy systems. When Ronald Reagan took office, one of the first things he did was remove the solar panels from the White House and terminate the tax credits. Many people in the solar industry went out of business. The country was convinced that solar doesn't work. Well, we're here to tell you, and show you, that solar does work. Hopefully someday soon more people will realize this. Here are a couple myths and facts about solar energy: Myth: We are waiting for a scientific breakthrough to make solar energy feasible. Fact: Solar panels work fine just the way they are. The technology is extremely reliable and in use in thousands of applications today. More than a technological breakthrough, the "scale of production" is what will really make solar competitive. It's like a Catch-22. If more panels were produced, the cost could go down by 50% or more. With such a lower cost, everyone would use solar, from utility companies to individuals. To this day, the government

Solar Kogarah - developing and commercialising sustainable energy technology
The Solar Kogarah project is a major opportunity to raise awareness about the practical opportunities for solar energy applications. Renewable energy generation based on solar energy products is the cornerstone of a far-reaching, globally innovative urban renewal initiative occurring in suburban Sydney. The sustainable redevelopment of the Kogarah Town Square will feature Australia's largest, solar-powered, medium-density residential and commercial development. The two-year joint public and private sector project will cost $45 million. The solar power aspect is a highlight of a suite of energy and water conservation measures included in the project, which encompasses 190 apartments, commercial and retail space and a new public library. Kogarah Council, together with High Trade Company Pty Ltd and various other public and private sector interests, is developing the complex referred to as Solar Kogarah. The $3 million solar energy component received a $1 million dollar grant under the Federal Government's Renewable Energy Commercialisation Program.

As such, solar energy is a vast renewable energy resource with the potential to provide clean energy for all, and offset the climate-altering effects of fossil fuel burning. Solar photovoltaics (PVs) are devices that convert the energy of sunlight directly into electricity. They operate silently, have no moving parts, and produce no pollutant emissions during their operating lifetime. They are ideally suited for energy generation within the urban environment and can be incorporated into a host of novel architectural materials. The ECI is actively researching technical, social and policy aspects to promote best-practice installations and encourage the growth of a strong UK solar PV market.
