24. Illinois Wildlife Federation – Advocating Practical, Scientific Management
Focused on ethical hunting practices and management and conservation of fish and wildlife, forest, mineral, water and soil resources. Includes history, newsletter, legislation issues, memorial fund, links and contacts.
http://www.illinoiswildlife.org/
ILLINOIS WILDLIFE FEDERATION has been a consistent leader in protecting our natural resources and needs. Our members act as spokesmen, advocates and leaders for Illinois' great out-of-doors. The Illinois Wildllife Federation began in 1936 as conservation clubs throughout Illinois came together. Those early conservation leaders organized with the purpose of taking conservation out of politics. The work resulted in the creation of the Illinois Department of Wildlife and Parks, a conservation agency that has been a model for other states. Since then, the Federation has undertaken many successful projects that ensure Illinois continues to be the leading state in conservation policies and funding. Today our members continue practicing the tradition of practical scientific management of fish and wildlife, forest, mineral, water and soil resources. We encourage and advocate the long-term protection and enhancement of all outdoor recreation in Illinois. E-Mail: Info@IllinoisWildlife.org

Availability Parkville campus Credit Points Coordinator Dr Tony Weatherley Prerequisites 202-203 Soil and Water Resources. Semester (view timetable) Subject Description This subject will examine the major current issues in the management of soils under various land uses in Australia. The dynamic nature of the soils will be explored through study of the chemical, physical and biological processes in the soil environment, particularly those which impact directly on plant growth. The subject should develop an understanding of how soils can be managed to optimise plant growth and minimise adverse effects on the environment and present practical solutions to soil management. Content includes:
  • reactions of nutrients and contaminants with soil surfaces; processes controlling nutrient availability with particular reference to nitrogen and phosphorus; assessment of nutrient availability including quantity/intensity relationships;

    Introduction
    Concern for and management of natural resources is becoming more important each day as a result of increasing human populations and limited natural resources and habitats. Natural resource managers help balance the needs of people with the ability of ecosystems to support soil, water, forests, wildlife, fish, and recreational resources. UMC's Natural Resources program (also known as the "NatR" program) provides an integrated approach to soil and water conservation, wildlife and fisheries management, forestry, and recreation. This combination enables graduates to work with a variety of resources and people and to build a career tailored to their interests. Resource Links

    SOIL MANAGEMENT and CONSERVATION
    Research in this division covers a broad range of both basic and applied studies that involve the interaction of other soil disciplines or divisions plus the relationships with other agricultural, environmental, engineering, social and economic fields. Research is directed toward areas that evaluate short and long term effects of soil management practices and climatic stress on the growth of plants and the interaction with variables from scientific fields. Emphasis is on relative impacts on soil structure degradation, organic matter loss, new tillage systems, new seeding equipment, alternative fertilizer and chemical inputs, alternative crops, crop rotations with legumes, intercropping, double cropping, soil erosion and sediment transport, nutrient cycling, waste management, soil environment or tilth, set aside acres, surface and subsurface biotechnology.
