Soil and Water Management Program
Testing of Farm Soils in the CNMI
How can a farmer tell how much of what kind of fertilizer is needed to grow a good crop? A soil sample from at least 5 parts of the field needs to be dug about 8 inches deep, mixed well, then analyzed for the basic fertilizer nutrients. Should the sample be sent to a laboratory off island, or analyzed locally? The staff of NMC-CREES on Rota, Saipan and Tinian have tested the nutrient level of farm soils the past several months. Cooperating farmers submitted soil samples to their NMC-CREES extension agents, who then mailed these to a commercial lab in the U.S. Mainland. The purpose of this research is to evaluate "soil test kits" that can be purchased from local garden shops. These kits are not always accurate for all soil types, so NMC-CREES wants to see how well the kits perform on local soils. Craig Smith PhD, Horticulturist for NMC-CREES, will be comparing the laboratory results to how well the soil samples rank on the "Rapitest Soil Test Kit" that can be purchased locally for under $30. Contact Dr. Smith at 670-234-5498 for more information, or send an electronic message: Sorry, but a Javascript-enabled browser is required to email me.

Soil and Water Management Option: Graduates are knowledgeable in synergetic physical, chemical and biological processes occurring in soil and adjacent Earth compartments (rock, surface water and atmosphere). This will allow them to better comprehend soil fertility, soil salinity, and the consequence of land management practices (especially ones related to agriculture) on the soil resources. The course work also covers the use, occurrence, and behaviour of water in arid climates. Elective courses address irrigation principles, soil and water conservation, soil-water-plant relations, management of salt-affected soils, chemical movement in soils, and general agronomy and plant sciences. Nature of Work: Graduates study the composition of soils as it is related to plant/crop growth. They study the responses of various soil types to fertilizers, tillage practices, and crop rotation. Soil scientists working for the Government conduct soil surveys, classifying and mapping soils. They provide information and recommendation to farmers and other landowners regarding the best use of land and how to avoid pr correct problems such as erosion. They consult with engineers and other technical personnel working on construction projects about the effects of, and solutions to, soil problems. In cooperation with ecologists and environmental scientists, soil scientists work effective land use and sustainable development of soil resources. Work conditions include laboratory, field and office work.

TUESDAY, JULY 23, 2002 TIME: ROOM # 510A
Co-Chairs:
Jean Louis Daigle Canada Mr. Ali Madani Canada NOT AVAILABLE Many factors influence the performance and proper functioning of irrigation, drainage and water management systems. Inadequate attention is paid to the control of pollutants in rural areas. These pollutants often end up in irrigation and drainage waterways which then affect soil quality and crop growth. Improper water management systems can also induce soil erosion. Soil conservation practices are therefore essential for agricultural sustainability. There is a need to develop strategies to reduce the pollution of soil and water resources, under agricultural water management. In addition, properly maintained and operated irrigation systems will enhance water conservation, and reduce soil and water contamination.

Soil and Water Management Potato growers are becoming increasingly interested in irrigation. However, potato growers frequently need moisture when surface waters supplies are limited. Groundwater systems can be quite expensive. So, it is very important to look at alternative methods of increasing plant available water without having to rely on irrigation. We are interested in evaluating compost and paper fiber mulches to increase soil moisture availability to potatoes. Integrated soil and water management in acid sulphate soils. Balancing agricultural production and environmental requirements in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.
Le Quang Minh The objectives of this study in the Mekong delta, Vietnam, were: (1) to obtain a better understanding of the effects of soil physical properties and flow types on solute transport in ASS emphasing aluminum; (2) to quantify environmental hazards resulting from amelioration activities in acid sulphate soils (ASS); and (3) to identify measures which can increase agricultural production and reduce negative environmental side effects.
This study was conducted on ASS in the Mekong delta, Vietnam and consisted of 5 experiments starting in the dry season and ending at the end of the flood season. All experiments were carried out under field conditions. Transport of soluble aluminum was investigated for different types of water flow, which are typical for each season such as capillary rise, bypass flow and runoff.
During the rainy season, the study was focused on aluminum transport with bypass flow and runoff in and on raised beds, which are constructed by soil materials excavated from adjacent lateral ditches with the objective to avoid flooding and to enhance leaching of soil. This is a very common technique to grow upland crops in ASS.

Master of Bioscience Engineering:
Soil and Water Management
The Master of Science in Bioscience Engineering in Soil and Water Management aims to give students a broad but also a well funded education in the biological, physical and chemical aspects of soil management and/or water management. This both for the use of natural resources and the conservation of natural ecosystems. Although these aspects are discussed in other programmes, an engineer graduated as Master of Science in Bioscience Engineering in Soil and Water Management needs to fully understand and master the characteristics and processes taking place in soils and surface and ground water. Moreover he must be able to interfere in these processes and to quantitatively predict the impact and consequences of these interventions. This programme positions itself as a specialised education resulting in experts who have a good overview of the biotic and abiotic processes within soils and natural waters, combined with a profound knowledge on engineering techniques. As a consequence they must be able to provide advices and solutions to problems where managers of agricultural
