ABOUT US
BOARD MEMBERS
Nepal, The land of the Himalayas in spite of being small in size, is immensely rich on biological diversity and for centuries the friendly people of this nation have been coexisting with its natural environment in a dynamic harmony by adopting diverse indigenous practices.
But, with rapid increase in human population, the vicious cycle of poverty and depletion of natural resources has became a fact of life, for majority of Nepalese people. This combined with unsustainable and ill planned development, changing consumption pattern, unplanned urbanization and improper management of the environment have resulted in impacts of grave consequences.
It is with such background in mind that a group of professionals with experiences across the board established an autonomous, non governmental, non profit oriented organization named "Forum for Environmental management and Research – Nepal" in short FERN INTRODUCTION OBJECTIVES CHOOSE TOPICS PUBLICATIONS ... Soil and water management in State forests
Forests play an essential role in the protection and maintenance of our soil and water resources. The conservation of soil and water contributes to catchment health and biodiversity for the benefit of the whole community. Most major rivers in NSW have at least part of their headwaters in State forests. From these forests comes water that is used for town and rural water supplies. Forests filter rainwater and run-off entering watercourses, ensuring good water quality. Conservation and maintenance of soil and water resources are fundamental aims of the management of State forests. The mechanisms for achieving this are incorporated into State Forests of NSW Codes of Practice.
Codes of Practice
Through its Codes of Practice, State Forests is committed to using world's best management practices to ensure that soil and water quality are not adversely impacted by timber harvesting, roading and other operations and to ensure that the amount and quality of water delivered to local communities is not adversely affected. Our forest management also aims to maintain the capacity of soils to support natural forest ecosystem processes. The practices that State Forests uses are documented in State Forests Forest Practices Code for field operations, which specifies, amongst other things, the operational standards required for delivering clean water and meeting current regulatory requirements. The practices include many protection measures, such as the maintenance of undisturbed streamside filter strips, use of silt fencing, construction of appropriate road drainage and stream crossings and limits placed on road use during wet weather.

Recent Stuff A distinctive combination of commercial, urban horticultural and environmental concerns drives activity at the University of Florida Fort Lauderdale Research and Education Center. Unique problems associated with South Florida depend on research, education and extension efforts focused within this area. Given the enormous differences in environment, flora, and fauna endemic to Southeast Florida, these efforts cannot be adequately performed in other areas of the state. Our faculty, staff and facilities represent a valuable local information and resource base for the southern third of the state that cannot be effectively duplicated elsewhere.

Swamp Development in Indonesia A Web site by Adriaan van den Eelaart in support of ISDP (Integrated Swamp Development Project) IBRD Loan 3755-IND Reclaimed Swampland in Indonesia is situated in the coastal areas and its environment is mainly influenced by the tidal movements of the sea, estuaries and tidal rivers. It is part of the Coastal Environment and the water management of the Swamp Schemes is little influenced by its hinterland. The main aim of this Web site is to present a balanced view of Conservation and Development in the Coastal Tidal Wetlands of Indonesia. Come and See the Swamps of Indonesia! Reclaimed swamp land in South Kalimantan Fisherman with rice fields in background Acid Sulphate Soils and Peat soils. In the coastal zones of Indonesia there are 6-8 million ha of mineral and peaty soils, containing pyrite. (Acid Sulphate soils) and there are about 16 million ha of deep Peat soils. That makes Indonesia the country with the far largest area of pyritic soils in the world and one of the largest with peat soils. Reclamation and Development of both soil types is very environmental sensitive. That fact resulted in the recent past in intense discussions whether these wetland/swamp areas should be protected against any type of reclamation. In my opinion a discussion, pro or contra, that is not effective, because these lands are opened up anyhow at a very fast rate. In my believe

The Southern Rivers Catchment Management Authority plays a vital role in the management of South Coast catchments from Stanwell Park in the North to the Victorian border, including the Snowy River. The Authority was established in 2004 by the NSW Government to ensure the protection and sustainable development of land, vegetation and water resources within the catchment. It answers directly to the Minister for Natural Resources. The Authority sees the development of strong partnerships in natural resource management as critical to its success, and will work closely with the Sydney Catchment Authority, local government, State Government agencies, the Federal Government, community groups, industry and individuals within the catchment to achieve its goals. Building on the two catchment blueprints developed by the former catchment management boards, the Authority will:
  • produce a catchment action plan and investment strategies targeting the areas of highest priority, recommend and manage incentive programs aimed at engaging local communities in natural resource management, provide landholders with the information they need to develop property vegetation plans, and
