Choosing School Software
by Tammy Payton This article has appeared on the following website: the Well Connected Educator Articles and Interviews
Congratulations! Your school has earmarked money for software, and now you're wondering where to begin! How do you discover the software that will best fit your needs? What kind of software program should you use? What kinds of computer programs are available? What are management systems, and do you need to purchase one? These were questions that we asked ourselves when our school had a major technological renovation in 1994. After serving on the software adoption committee, I began developing questions that helped us evaluate software. This article is a product of our discoveries.
Software Comes First
Ideally, choose your software before committing yourself to what hardware and platforms you'll be using. By choosing the software before you purchase your computers, you can be sure that the programs will run efficiently. Schools often purchase their operating systems and network software before they've chosen the software. This limits your choices. All software that you purchase has specific system requirements in order for it to run properly. If you've already purchased your hardware, then you need to narrow your software choices to those that will operate on the system and the system's capabilities that you have. If you have a networked system, be sure to see if the software you are looking at has a networked version.

The launch date for the new exam is April 5, 2004. The exam will be offered up to six days a week, during two out of every three months. According to the latest information, a candidate can sit for one or more parts of the exam during a test period but may not take a specific part of the exam more than once during that same test period. Each State Board can establish its own policy on the time frame in which a candidate must pass all four parts of the exam. The AICPA has recommended that the period be 18 months.

Software For Learning
For several years, the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI) has conducted software evaluations for the Maricopa Community Colleges . Critical is the identification of the software's effectiveness as a tool for learning. All reviews were completed by faculty members. Topic Date Description Counseling Sept 1996 Counselors reviewed several titles in the areas of personal development and decision making, for potential use as a classroom tool and as a tool in a counseling-client setting. Games and Simulations Oct 1995 Shall we teach with a game? was the question we asked faculty in several disciplines. They looked at the games in how useful they might be as an instructional tool and each provided a learning activity that could use the software. Humanities Jan 1995 LynnAnn Wojciechowicz of South Mountain Community College reviewed 23 Humanities software programs, most of which are available on CD-ROM. Mathematics Aug 1994 Math software was last reviewed by us in 1987, and a new round was completed in the summer of 1994. Some of the reviewers took on the extra option to create lesson materials for the program under consideration. NOTE: These reviews have been removed since they are several years out of date.

    January 2004
DURING MY FIRST SEMESTER of graduate school, whenever I was asked what I planned to do in the future, I would answer “teach.” After seeing a few raised eyebrows, I realized I needed to silence those ambitions if I were going to be taken seriously. Slowly, as the arduous work of graduate school took hold, my thoughts about teaching drifted further and further from my mind. At that time, I had no idea there was a possibility of becoming a “teacher-scholar” and merging my budding interests in research with my desire to teach. This journal was partially responsible for guiding me back to the path of teaching. When I first saw an issue of Teaching Sociology, I understood that my desire to teach was not a private endeavor. Indeed, I discovered a strong community of scholars devoted to improving teaching and helping students learn. This gave me confidence to be open about my passion for teaching. (I also have Reece McGee to thank for that.) Later, as I came to understand the role that the American Sociological Association has played in creating and supporting the teaching of sociology, my appreciation and connection to this community of teacher-scholars deepened. Teaching Sociology represents, in my mind, a concrete reflection and reminder of the importance placed on teaching by the ASA.

    Software Review
    Insight 2.0

New edition of Sam Savage's Excel add-ins for uncertainty modeling and accompanying book earn high marks for teaching management science.
    By Stefan Scholtes
Sam Savage is known as one of the fathers of the spreadsheet movement in management science. He developed the prize-winning spreadsheet optimization software What'sBest! back in the 1980s when most OR practitioners still solved their optimization problems on mainframe computers, and students like me, even if they loved the subject, didn't have the faintest idea how the wonderful concepts and techniques could be applied to real-world problems. Of course, the subject has moved on over the past 20 years. Industrial-strength optimization solvers and simulation packages are now readily available, and their use is facilitated by high-level, easy-to-use modeling environments such as AMPL, GAMS, Mathematica and Matlab. The vendors of many of these packages offer inexpensive student versions, which are used throughout the world for OR teaching in engineering departments, including financial engineering. Interestingly, these advances have not had a significant impact on generic management science teaching in business schools. Why is this? The prime reason is that, in comparison to their engineering pendants, management applications are typically an order of magnitude messier. They are highly complex with lots of independent actors and lots of uncertainty in the data. It seems unrealistic to assume that one can build a valid computer model of a real management problem, let alone find the "right" solution. But what is management science good for then? I had long discussions about this issue with Savage two years ago when I was visiting Stanford and happened to have an office next to his. These discussions came in handy at a time when my teaching audience changed from engineering to MBA students.
