Search English as 2nd Language Computer Use in the Classroom The following feature provides a discussion of tips and basic strategies for using a computer effectively in an ESL class setting. Computers should be used as a language learning tool - just as any other piece of equipment (i.e., tape recorder, VCR, blackboard, etc.). It is important the computer NOT become the center of attention of the lesson. There are situations when activities at the computer can become the center of attention, however these situations should be avoided and left to students to decide when, and if, they want to utilize such activities (in self-access). Planning a lesson around such an activity requires the teacher to first consider the scope of a particular lesson. Once the content of the lesson is decided on, the teacher can then consider if the use of a certain computer based activity meets a desired objective of the lesson. At this point, the teacher can then decide at which stage of the lesson to use a computer and for what purposes. Computers as a Language Learning Tool For some tasks, computers can provide distinct advantages over more traditional approaches. The use of a computer for listening exercises often provides not only sound, but also visual input providing students with more contextual clues. Students interacting with a computer are also using motor skills as well, which can have a strong reinforcing effect on the learning process by connecting physical actions (clicking, typing) with desired results. Students are also allowed more control over their own learning process as they make the decisions when to repeat questions, exercises and sequences based on their own progress. In this manner, student needs and individual issues are further pushed to the forefront of any given activity, as it is the student making decisions for him/herself rather than the teacher for the group.

Software Reviews Review E D U C A T O R S O F T W A R E R E V I E W Educators Review Software: Inspiration This review reflects the observations and experiences of independent teacher volunteers, and is provided as a service to Education World readers. The review in no way constitutes an endorsement of the product or its manufacturer by those teachers or by Education World. Inspiration, a product of Inspiration Software, Inc. , is a concept-mapping program for students in grades 6-12. This visual learning tool provides diagramming and outlining environments designed to help students organize their ideas. Recently, Education World asked five reviewers, all teachers or educational technology specialists, to check out Inspiration with real students in actual classroom situations. Each teacher was asked to use Inspiration with his or her students for a period of at least one month, note specific strengths, weaknesses, and/or quirks of the program, record personal observations or suggestions both positive and negative and rate the software on a scale of 1-4. The results are in and this is what our reviewers had to say!

Better Than Ever
As these titles show, instructional software is improving
By Russell Smith Here's good news: Instructional software is getting better. Today's top-selling CD-ROMs have a nice combination of advanced software techniques and comprehensive instructional content. It looks as though the producers have finally stopped simply converting programs from floppies to CD-ROMs without really taking advantage of larger storage capabilities. What's more, the new software is less expensive than the titles of five years ago and has been carefully designed for specific segments of the education market. Here are some of my top picks for early 1999, along with phone numbers and web addresses so you can get more information and prices for volume purchases.

Students learn important details about the biosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, climate, and atmosphere, people and their environment, and natural resources. Teachers will be pleased with the essential elements covered in this program.

CLASSROOM ASSISTANT editor: John Bradford
SOFTWARE AND TECHNOLOGICAL EQUIPMENT
Spell-checkers - A 4th grade student of mine is dyslexic and struggles very much with spelling. He has the most wonderful ideas for stories, but when it comes time to put those ideas on paper, it looks atrocious. He spells everything phonetically, and at times he doesn’t even do that. We do a lot of proof-reading when he writes, and he knows that they are wrong, he just doesn’t have a clue of what he needs to do to change it. I decided that I would try using a spell-checker with him to see if anything improved. His mother was very apprehensive at first, and did not want him relying on a device to help him with his disability. She felt that he needed to learn how to spell on his own, and that by using a spell-checker it was not going to remedy that problem.
