Using the Internet As a Teaching Tool Using the internet requires a certain level of reading skill, so may not be appropriate for very young children. Pairing young children with buddies from another grade level may make the internet more accessible. The following sites are rich in information about using the internet as a teaching tool. Caution: young children should not spend inordinate amounts of time in front of a computer monitor when more meaningful learning occurs with real materials and peers.

Technology In The Classroom REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE By: Jamshed N. Lam The literature is rich with examples of technology in the classroom. It helps the emergent learner, students with disabilities, students with language disabilities and the gifted child. With the cultural and socioeconomic diversity in our schools today, teaching effectively to these different levels of ability, background, interests, learning styles and modalities is a major challenge. We usually teach to the majority since it is somewhat impractical to try to tailor teaching to each student. Too basic an instruction will help the struggling learner but bore the gifted and visa versa. Thus poorer students are left hanging in their confusion, and the brightest students miss exciting challenges. With computers as tutors, each student has the ability to work at their own pace. Often, students are too confused or embarrassed to ask questions because they don't want to show their ignorance. With individualized computer instruction, students can always immediately request help if something is unclear. Computers help to make it more interactive. They are extremely effective with the struggling learners because they (unlike humans) have unlimited patience. Computers can teach via a multitude of modalities depending on the learning style of the student (Bennett, 2002).

We are fortunate in our district to have our computers linked to a TV which is mounted on a wall. It makes it easier to incorporate various software and the internet into daily lessons (I teach Reading/Language Arts). I also have two additional computers (one is a castoff from home) which the kids use in their free time as they finish their work. To enable some of my slower students to get some computer time, I occasionally use a roster with the kids' names to decide who will have computer time that day. Sometimes I'll start at the beginning, middle or end of the roster to allow everyone an equal chance of using the computer. Good luck! Using the computer effectively in the classroom can be a tricky business! Karen Idea #4

Praise for Mult-e-Maths:
Mult-e-Maths Case Study (PDF, 189Kb)
Tony Williams from Gossey Lane Primary School, Birmingham, explains how Mult-e-Maths brings a new dimension to the way maths is taught. "Problem solving lies at the heart of mathematics but children don't always find it easy. They need to be introduced to a range of problems and taught the skills to solve them. Mult-e-Maths teachers have a great way to do this effectively using their interactive whiteboards. Mult-e-Maths contains a wealth of child-friendly problems to interest children and stimulate collaboration, so that children and teachers can explore strategies and solutions together." Anita Straker "Mult-e-Maths is one of the most useful programs we have used on our interactive whiteboards. Mult-e-Maths is truly interactive and has provided a structured approach to problem solving in maths. The teachers notes and activity sheets are all so readily available as pdf files and are exactly what the teachers need." Termoncanice Primary School, Limavaddy, Co. L'Derry.
