Women's sport was given a huge jolt when the International Olympic Committee voted off the sole women's-only team sport on the Olympic program, softball, in addition to its cousin, baseball. The decision by the 116 committee members - of whom only 10 are women - was to allow two new sports to be included in the 28-sport Olympic program. However, in a vote yesterday, IOC members failed to give enough support to any of the potential replacements. "The Olympic program in 2012 will have 26 sports," said the president of the IOC, Jacques Rogge. Dr Rogge had wanted rugby sevens to be included, but in a series of complicated votes it, as well as golf and roller sports, was beaten by karate and squash. But those two sports then failed to get the two-thirds majority vote required to be admitted to the program. The changes will take effect at the Games in London in 2012. The Australian softball team won medals at the past three Olympics - bronze in Atlanta and Sydney and silver in Athens - while the Australian baseball team also picked up silver in Athens.

What they found was, shall we say, interesting. The shortcomings used to justify the removal of baseball, softball and modern pentathlon three years ago exist to varying degrees in 11 other sports: canoe-kayak, archery, rowing, wrestling, shooting, judo, handball, table tennis, weightlifting, taekwondo and fencing. Even more are still open to question.
There is right now in the IOC a massive lobbying effort underway as federations plead with IOC members to support their sport in Singapore. This is far more than Jacques Rogge ever bargained for when he started this process. More on that later.

IOC cuts baseball, softball in '12
July 8, 2005 SINGAPORE Baseball and softball were dropped today from the Olympic program for the 2012 Summer Games in London. Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained. ''I think they've made a big, big mistake," said Tommy Lasorda, the former Dodgers manager who managed the 2000 US team to the gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Games. ''Baseball is played by all countries now and softball, too. I think that's really going to hurt the Olympics. I don't want to knock the other sports, but I think this is a big mistake. I am very disappointed. ''I was fortunate enough to coach the US Olympic team in Australia. The parks were full at all times. How can they take away a sport like that?" The IOC will consider replacing them with two sports from a waiting list of five: golf, rugby, squash, karate, and roller sports. That decision will be made tomorrow. Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936.

USA Softball has been on a white-knuckle ride since its sport was introduced into the Olympics in 1996. The first nail biter came when Dot Richardson hit a medal-clinching home run against China in the sport's inaugural Olympic games in Atlanta. The next thriller came in Sydney in 2000 when the defending gold-medal team lost three of its first-round games and almost didn't even advance to the medal round. Stacey Nuveman's three-run homer in the 10th inning in the semifinals saved the day and sent the United States to the gold-medal game. The most recent scare, though, was not scheduled on the Olympic calendar. The International Olympic Committee (IOC), on a recommendation by its program commission, opened discussions to eliminate softball, baseball and modern pentathlon, beginning with the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing. The IOC's reason for possibly eliminating sports from the Games (for the first time since polo was dropped in 1936) was said to be in the interest of making the Games smaller and less costly.

Official Statement From USA Baseball On The New Olympic Programme For The 2012 Olympic Games Baseball and softball will not be on the programme for the 2012 games.
July 8, 2005 Official Announcement From The IOC Regarding The New Olympic Programme For The 2012 Olympic Games In London, England The 117th IOC Session in Singapore voted on Friday to include 26 of the 28 current Olympic sports on the programme of the Games of the XXX Olympiad in 2012. The Session decided that baseball and softball will remain on the list of Olympic sports as noted in the Olympic Charter, rule 46, but will not be on the programme for 2012. The two sports are, however, eligible for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Games. The IOC Executive Board will convene on Saturday to decide whether any of the five candidate sports (Roller Sports, World Squash, Golf, Karate or Rugby) should be put forward to the Session, who will then vote on whether the sport(s) could be added to the list of Olympic sports and then potentially be included on the programme of the 2012 Games. Official Statement From USA Baseball Regarding That Decision "We are obviously disappointed in the decision reached by the General Assembly of the International Olympic Committee in Singapore," said Mike Gaski, President of USA Baseball. "Our sport has worked tirelessly over the course of the last three years to address the concerns expressed by the IOC in 2002, and felt as though we had done a good job of doing so."

The players celebrated at home plate as Lauren Lappin scored the run. They posed for a photo with the other team. They reached over the fence and signed autographs for little girls. "We were pretty excited, pretty pumped up," pitcher Dana Sorensen said. Then U.S. coach Carol Hutchins hastily summoned the players. She had something important to tell them. Had some bad news. "The way Hutch was talking, the tears in her eyes," said Sorensen, a Scripps Ranch High alum, "I thought something bad happened to somebody in the program." Actually, something bad happened to the program itself. Officials had just gotten word from the International Olympic Committee meetings in Singapore, where it was Friday morning. Softball was out of the Olympics, effective in 2012. Twenty-six got the majority required to stay. Baseball and softball did not, becoming the first sports cut from a Summer Games since polo after the 1936 Games.

The U.S. team took a 110-game winning streak to Sydney before losing three straight and nearly missing the medal round. The Americans recovered to win gold. The U.S. team's pitching staff of Fernandez, Jennie Finch, Lori Harrigan and Cat Osterman is unmatched. Australia, China and Canada will also be in the medal hunt. This competition is crucial for the future of women's softball as an Olympic sport. The IOC has only guaranteed it a spot through the 2008 Beijing Games and will make another review later this summer.

Bush threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Australia played Japan in the opening game of the eight-team softball tournament. After being introduced and getting a warm ovation from the crowd at Helliniko Sports Complex, Bush went to the mound and playfully signaled which pitch he was going to throw to Japanese catcher Noriko Yamaji. The 80-year-old left-hander then wound up and lobbed a pitch into Yamaji.
