Softball reeling after getting the boot
Players, coaches bemoan the loss of the international stage the Olympics provide.
By BOB PUTNAM, Times Staff Writer Published July 9, 2005 Michele Smith continues to be an ambassador for women's fast-pitch softball. A member of two Olympic gold-medal squads (Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000), Smith stages dozens of Little League sponsored clinics around the country, works regularly as a commentator for ESPN and pitches for a professional team in Japan. So Smith was taken aback when the International Olympic Committee decided Thursday to drop softball and baseball from the 2012 Games in London.

IAAF / Athletics
The final entry deadline for the 14th IAAF World Half Marathon Championships passed by on 19 September and, except for the 2002 celebration in Brussels (BEL), this year's championships which take place in Edmonton (CAN) on 1 October have attracted the greatest ever number of IAAF Member Federations. In all, 57 nations are seeking to send athletes to Canada, as opposed to the record of 60 who competed in the Belgium capital three years ago. Edmonton literally marks the end of the road for this World Athletics Series event, which has seen 13 editions. Next year, in its stead, in an exciting development for the sport, the IAAF World Road Running Championships will be inaugurated in the city of Debrecen, (HUN) on 7 October 2006.

Softball
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Softball is a team sport in which a ball , eleven to twelve inches in circumference, is thrown by a player called a pitcher and hit by an offensive player called a batter with a round, smooth stick called a bat . The ball itself is also called a softball. Scoring is accomplished by the batter running and touching a series of four markers on the ground called bases . Softball is a direct descendant of baseball (sometimes referred to as hardball to differentiate the two), but differs from it in several ways, of which the chief four are:
  • The ball is always pitched (thrown to the batter) underarm – that is, it is released when the hand is below the hip and no further from the body than the elbow – while in baseball the ball may be released in any position and is usually thrown overarm or sidearm. The ball is larger, less dense, and heavier than a baseball. The playing field is normally smaller. The game is seven innings long, as opposed to nine in baseball. Consequently, softball games typically take between sixty minutes and two hours to complete, as opposed to around three hours for most baseball games.
Softball is the most popular participant sport in the United States. An estimated 56 million Americans will play at least one game of softball during a year.

... Discuss Diamond cutter: IOC drops baseball, softball for 2012 02:53 AM CDT on Friday, July 8, 2005 From Wire reports Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the International Olympic Committee, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained. The IOC will consider replacing them with two sports from a waiting list of five: golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. That decision will be made Saturday. Baseball and softball are the first sports cut from the Olympics since polo in 1936. The United States won a gold medal in softball in each of the three Games (Atlanta, Sydney and Athens) it has been a medal sport. The U.S. baseball team did not qualify for the Athens Games. Baseball has been vulnerable because it doesn't bring top major league players to the Olympics. Softball has been in danger because of a perceived lack of global appeal and participation.

10:21 PM CDT on Friday, July 8, 2005
Both sports lost their spots on the 2012 Olympic program when each failed to achieve a majority in a secret vote by IOC members Friday in Singapore. Baseball and softball were among sports targeted by IOC president Jacques Rogge as vulnerable to expulsion. Not that former IOC president Juan Antonio Samaranch of Spain was necessarily a huge balls-and-strikes fan. He was a powerful friend to women's sports, however, which can't be said for the IOC members who voted against softball. "The women's sports did better under Samaranch," Olympic swimming champion Donna de Varona said Friday. "The IOC is mostly male. It's so sad for softball." Achieving Success Under Title IX
(continued)
Increasing participation in athletics
Title IX has helped girls and women participate in interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics in far greater numbers than they had in the past. When Title IX became law, dramatic change was needed to level the playing fields of this nation's schools and to change the perception of the place of girls and women on them. Just one year before the enactment of Title IX, in 1971, a Connecticut judge was allowed by law to disallow girls from competing on a boys' high school cross country team even though there was no girls' team at the school. And that same year, fewer than 300,000 high school girls played interscholastic sports. Today, that number is 2.4 million. The rise of women's basketball is illustrative of the dramatic changes that have taken place since the enactment of Title IX. In 1972, 132,299 young girls played high school basketball. In 1994-95 the number had increased to 412,576, an increase of over 300 percent. In the last two years, women's basketball has come of age with the gold-medal victory of the American women's basketball team at the 1996 Olympics, the increased media attention to the NCAA women's basketball tournament, and the development of two professional women's basketball leagues. "Without Title IX, I'd be nowhere."

Karate and squash were briefly chosen to replace baseball and softball before being rejected, meaning the earliest they can now compete is 2016. "For our athletes, it's an insult to talk about 11 years from now. "The whole career of the karate athlete is eight to 10 years, I can't tell my athletes to keep going until 2016 due to five minutes of what happened here." He added: "I can tell you it's very, very bad, so disappointing - how can I explain what happened to my members?" Squash legend Jahangir Khan said: "As a player, one never gives up. We'll try again for 2016. We'll get in one day," he said. "Obviously, I'd have liked to see my game there. But we'll never give up." Baseball/Softball UK

QUOTE Today, there is a new definition for irony. Baseball and softball in the UK, so excited by the possibility of competing in a home games in 2012 in London, have just had their dream shattered. The IOC were asked to vote on each sport in the Olympic programme. Only sports that received more than fifty percent of the vote were to be retained - and with the exception of baseball and softball, all were.
A games in London would have meant so many things for baseball and softball - the opportunity to compete as a host nation in both sports, temporary and legacy facilities, presitige and a chance to significantly raise the profile of our sports in the UK.
