Some members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) expressed their surprise on Friday with the exclusion of baseball and softball from the 2012 Olympic Games. "I am really suprised, after all I would have expected no change, if there is any change, one is maximum, therefore I am quite surprised," said IOC's German member Thomas Bach. Baseball and softball were voted out of the program of the 2012 Olympic Games in London after failing to garner more than half of the votes of the 100-plus IOC members at the 117th IOC Session.

MEXICO CITY, Nov. 29 — The International Olympic Committee, postponing a potentially painful vote, decided today to put off a decision on dropping baseball, softball and modern pentathlon from the Games until after the 2004 Olympics in Athens. The decision has only one immediate impact: it will be impossible for new sports, like rugby and golf, which had been proposed, to be part of the Olympics for the foreseeable future.

Softball star devastated by Olympic vote
By Record-Eagle staff writer Jennie Finch is the face of women's softball. And her face lost its smile when asked about the International Olympic Committee's recent vote to eliminate softball and baseball following the 2008 Summer Games in China. "It was a definite shock," Finch said prior to Sunday evening's All-Star Legends and Celebrities softball game at Comerica Park in Detroit. "It's devastating. We worked so hard to make softball an Olympic sport - 20 years - and it hurts to have it dropped. "The game of softball is at an all-time high," Finch said. "Baseball will always have the major leagues. But the Olympics was our chance to shine. This is just heartbreaking." Finch, a superstar pitcher who the led the United States to a gold medal last summer, had a message for girls who enjoy the game.

July 09, 2005 AN apparent Arab-led movement to ditch the American sports of baseball and softball from the Olympic program last night triggered a bizarre counter-protest that made a farce of the process of finding two sports to replace them.
The 117th session of the International Olympic Committee ended in uproar last night in Singapore when squash and karate, the two candidate sports that survived an exhaustive elimination process to advance to a vote of the general assembly, both failed to secure the two-thirds majority required for admission to future Games. "Amazing, just amazing," said John Coates, president of the Australian Olympic Committee and one of the 105 IOC voting members who took part in the ballot. "We started the day with 28 Olympic sports. Now we have 26. That's it for another four years. There won't be another vote." Australia's three IOC members, Coates, Kevan Gosper and Phil Coles, supported the inclusion of sevens rugby, which was pipped by karate in the "best of the losers" second round of voting after squash won the initial round.

Olympic dumping of baseball/softball
First off, in case you missed the comment to my recent blog on London landing the '12 Olympics, I'd like to thank John for sending a link to this London Olympics blog. I, for one, hope the Brits pull it off masterfully. My only suggestion: Don't skimp on the antiterrorism security measures. Unfortunately, the International Olympic Committee has eliminated baseball and softball from the docket for 2012. Jemele Hill of the Orlando Sentinel makes a compelling case that Major League Baseball, not the IOC, blew it by not agreeing to take three weeks off in the middle of its season to send the world's top players to the Olympics and because of baseball's substandard drug-testing policy.

Olympics to drop baseball and softball in 2012
The Associated Press SATURDAY, JULY 9, 2005 SINGAPORE The International Olympic Committee voted Friday to drop baseball and softball from the 2012 Summer Games in London, making those two sports the first cut from the Games in 69 years. Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the IOC, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay on the program. The other 26 sports were retained. The IOC then voted from a waiting list of five sports: golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. Squash and karate won the ballots, but then were rejected in final confirmation votes. Baseball and softball, which will remain on the program for the 2008 Beijing Games, are the first sports eliminated from the Games since polo in 1936.

Equestrian events at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will be staged in Hong Kong. The switch of Olympic venue — the most radical since 1956 when Stockholm filled in for Melbourne, also for equestrian — was announced today after lengthy negotiations between games organisers and the International Equestrian Federation (FEI).
