    Collier: Olympic sports to erase
Sunday, July 17, 2005 By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You may have noted that baseball and softball have gotten themselves thrown out of the Olympics beginning in 2012, which is good, but the International Olympic Committee, with its customary smug restraint, stopped at only two ejections. Too bad. Here are five more "sports" that are way more erasable and should have gotten a similar defenestration: water polo, shooting, synchronized swimming, fencing and badminton. Maybe if the Olympics started lopping off seven sports at a time, we could eventually get to a place where the Olympics are close enough to killing themselves to spark a reasonable discussion about whether that would be a bad thing. Though nothing formal was forthcoming in the way of reasoning from the IOC on the baseball-softball killing, committee members said publicly that baseball in particular had a credibility problem due to steroid use. That's very close to comical.

Baseball, softball dropped for 2012 Olympics
Friday, July 08, 2005 By Stephen Wilson, The Associated Press
SINGAPORE Baseball and softball were tossed out of the Olympic program for the 2012 London Games the first sports cut from the Summer Games in 69 years. The International Olympic Committee then rejected the five sports wanting to get in. Each of the 28 existing sports was put to a secret vote by the IOC, and baseball and softball failed to receive a majority required to stay. The other 26 sports made the cut. IOC president Jacques Rogge said baseball and softball, two sports invented in America, would be eligible to win their way back into the Olympics for 2016. Baseball and softball, which will remain on the program for the 2008 Beijing Games, are the first sports eliminated from the Olympics since polo in 1936. "I think they've made a big, big mistake," said Tom Lasorda, the former Dodgers manager who guided the U.S. team to the gold medal in the 2000 Sydney Games. "Baseball is played by all countries now, and softball, too. I think that's really going to hurt the Olympics. I don't want to knock the other sports, but I think this is a big mistake." With two slots open on the program, the IOC voted from a waiting list of five sports: golf, rugby, squash, karate and roller sports. Squash and karate were nominated for inclusion but were rejected overwhelmingly.

    Citius Fortius Altius Revisited
With the 2004 Olympics about to begin, I have been thinking about the large number of sports that make up the Olympics. There are too many sports, and a lot of them are stupid. For example, baseball and softball are Olympic sports, and synchronised swimming is ridiculed because it is an art-form rather than a sport. So I have decided to get rid of the stupid sports from the Olympics, and I have decided that removing all sports that do not conform to the Olympic Ideals swifter, stronger, higher is a good place to start. I use these ideals as the basis of removing sports and adding new sports to my Olympic games.
    Sports to Remove
Before I start removing sports from my Olympics, I can simplify the Ideals by removing higher , as it is really similar to swifter. I can now throw out all sports that do not fit the two Ieals. However, this does not leave us many sports, so I will keep all sports that can be used to kill people, so I will rewrite the Ideals to read swifter, stronger deadlier

The United States won gold in baseball in the 2000 Olympics. Baseball and softball, however, will be dropped from the Olympics in 2012.
SINGAPORE - The International Olympic Committee delivered a shocking message to baseball and softball on Friday: Yer out! The two sports were kicked out of the Olympics, unwanted by international sports officials who felt they were too American for the world sports stage. The decision, made during a secret vote in Singapore, is effective for the 2012 London Games, meaning the two sports will have a final fling at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The sports, the first eliminated since polo in 1936, are eligible to reapply for the 2016 Games. U.S. women won all three gold medals since softball joined the Olympics, at the 1996 Atlanta, 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Games. American pitcher Lisa Fernandez, a three-time gold medalist, blamed the decision on IOC president Jacques Rogge. "Rogge has basically conspired against the sports to get them removed. We had done our job as a sport world wide to show we belong," she said. "I feel one person, the president of the IOC, a person from Europe, has taken it upon himself to ruin the lives of millions, actually billions of women."

Rogge says sports need tougher doping rules
SINGAPORE - The IOC has two suggestions for baseball if it wants to return to the Olympics after the 2012 Games: Put in place tougher doping rules, and put major leaguers on the field. "The message is clear," International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge said. "The IOC wants clean sport, the best athletes and universality." Baseball was singled out because major leaguers don't compete in the Olympics and its drug-testing program falls way short of international standards. Softball must increase its global appeal to win back its place, Rogge said. The sport also was hurt by its perceived ties to baseball. Both were tossed out Friday, the first cut from the program in 69 years. They will be played at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and can reapply in 2009 for readmission at the 2016 Games. "In the case of baseball, the best athletes are not competing and the major athletes perform in an environment where doping controls are not what we have in the Olympic world," Rogge said in concluding a weeklong IOC session.

Softball is an exciting game played by men and women of all ages all around the world. It was invented at the end of the 19th century as an indoor game and has become very popular among a number of countries, including the United States, Australia, Japan and China to name a few. Description Softball is played by two teams, nine players per team on the field, alternating turns at bat and defense. The aim of the team in offense is to hit the ball with the bat and, by consecutively reaching all three bases to return to the home plate and earn a run. The team in defense on the other hand pitches the ball to the team in offense and tries to prevent the other team from gaining points. Softball is played in two versions characterized by the kind of pitch delivered: fast pitch (competitive) and slow pitch (recreational/social). At the Olympic Games, only the women’s fast pitch event is included. In total, eight teams participate at the Olympic Games. The host city’s national team is automatically included among these teams, while the rest qualify through World Championships and other regional qualifying matches.

Baseball and softball dropped from London Games
Baseball and softball will not feature in the 2012 London Olympics after they were wiped from the program in a controversial vote on Friday. The two sports failed to win a majority of votes in a ballot of members at a meeting of the International Olympic Committee in Singapore and became the first sports to be axed from the Games since polo in 1936. Australia won silver medals in both sports at last year's Athens games. The 26 other sports from the Athens 2004 program did poll enough votes, and will remain on the program in London. Baseball and softball's ejection opens the door for two of golf, squash, karate, rugby sevens and roller sports to be added. Baseball Australia's chief executive Don Knapp slammed the decision to dump his sport and questioned the merits of any of the replacement sports. "I would like to see it be a sport that is recognised as a legitimate sport," he said.
