The players have influenced me more than I have influenced them.''
- Tennesse Lady Vol's coach Pat Summitt on her record-breaking 880th win.

During her illustrious career, Machado earned the bronze medal twice at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships (1955, 1956); finished sixth at the 1956 World Championships; and placed eighth overall, third in the free skate, at the 1956 Olympic Winter Games.

Making Olympic History: 2000 Sydney Games New York Times At the first modern Olympics in 1896, Melpomene became the first female to compete, although unofficially, in the games. Women have made many advancements in the Olympic games over the past 100 years and it appears that the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia will benefit them more than ever before. Two new sports have been added to the games, increasing the total number of sports to twenty-eight. In addition, Sydney will incorporate more than twenty new women's events into its program. This is twenty more than were seen in the Atlanta games in 1996. For the first time in Olympic competition, the Modern Pentathlon, Water Polo, and Weightlifting will include events for women. Athletic, Aquatic, and Shooting sports are also adding more women's events. Two sports being added to the Olympic agenda are the Triathlon and Mia Hamm (white jersey) battles for the ball during the U.S. women's 2-0 victory over Norway. (USA Today)

Posted on: September 16, 2004 COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) won five medals at the 2004 Olympic Games, becoming only the third American woman to win five at one meet. Her two gold, two silver and one bronze is the best performance by an American woman in Olympic history. Coughlin earned her first Olympic gold medal by winning the 100m backstroke in Olympic record-time. She then won bronze in the 100m freestyle in a field that had the fastest three medalists in history. On the relay side, she led off the 800m free relay in a time that would have won the 200m free individually. Her time set Team USA up for a world record in the relay, wiping the oldest existing mark off the books. In the 400m free and medley relays, Coughlin turned in fast splits to help her teammates to silver medals.
Korea in the gold-medal finals, 3-1. Sanderson scored two takedowns in the second period to put the match away and bring home a gold medal for the United States. His semifinal victory was a thrilling 3-2 decision over 1999 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist (85kg) Yoel Romero of Cuba. Sanderson scored two second-period takedowns for the margin of victory. He had lost his previous two meetings with Romero prior to the Olympic showdown. In an exciting quarterfinal match, Sanderson stopped 2002 World bronze medalist Majid Khodaei of Iran, 6-5. Sanderson fell behind and battled back with some outstanding wrestling late in the match. He also captured two matches in his pool competition, beating Magomed Kurguliev of Kazakhstan, 4-2, and Siarhei Borchanka of Belarus, 9-1.

CANDREA RECEIVES USOC AWARD ASA/USA Softball press release Candrea receives USOC Award
CHULA VISTA, CALIF. The United States Olympic Committee presented its most prestigious award, the Olympic Shield, on Wednesday, January 5 to 2004 USA Softball Olympic team head coach Mike Candrea (Casa Grande, Ariz.)
An honor given in recognition for an individual’s outstanding service to the United States Olympic Committee and the Olympic movement, Candrea is only the 45th person to receive this award since 1966. The first ever Olympic coach in the award’s 39 year history, this honor has only been awarded on 12 occasions since its inception.
Mike Candrea led the 2004 USA Softball team to one of the most prolific team performances in Olympic history. Persevering and battling during adverse times is just one of the many lessons taught both on and off the field by Candrea.
When he was selected to be the 2004 Olympic coach in May of 2002, Candrea set one goal and he accomplished it. Echoing numerous times of his will to ‘not just win, but to dominate,’ Coach Candrea led his team to its third consecutive gold medal and the cover of Sports Illustrated as ‘The Real Dream Team.’ One of the most dominating performances in Olympic history, he led the Red, White and Blue to a 9-0 record outscoring opponents 51-1.
Prior to the Games, Candrea and crew led his team across the nation in a 53- game ‘Aiming for Athens’ pre-Olympic tour where they finished undefeated while visiting approximately 30 U.S. cities.

- Jennie Finch, Lisa Fernandez, Crystl Bustos, Natasha Watley and the rest of the world's best softball players will converge on Salem, Va., as part of USA Softball's "Aiming for Athens" tour. The United States Olympic softball team will take on a group of college all stars at the James I. Moyer Sports Complex on Friday, June 18 in a single game to be played at 8 p.m. The tour is in the second of two phases leading up to the Athens Games. The Olympic team participated in various high-profile tournaments against college teams and now is in the grassroots portion of the tour, making stops in 22 cities across the country, including Salem. The U.S. team is currently 36-0 on the tour continuing a 150-game win streak in pre-Olympic tour history. The team has two more games before playing in Salem Friday night. On its current tour, the U.S. has outscored opponents 329-10 and the pitching staff has an ERA of 0.27. "This is an exciting opportunity to see America's team in action prior to its defense of its two Olympic gold medals," said Ron Radigonda, ASA executive director. "We have raised the bar on the competition we will face on this tour and that should prepare us for what we will face in Athens."
