Course Orientation I will urge you to develop your courses around the principles of cooperative learning, which include five (5) basic elements (NTL Forum, 2, 1, 1992): Positive interdependence : For cooperative learning to succeed, students must feel that they need each other and cannot truly succeed unless everyone in the group succeeds. Face-to-face promotive interaction : Students must promote one another's learning by explaining, discussing, and sharing what they know. They must confront and teach each other. Teaching is NOT instructor-talking, especially one-way talk. Individual accountability : Students must remain individually accountable. E.g., any member of a group must be ready to explain the group's answer to a problem. Even though we'll emphasize collective action, each student is still fully responsible for learning assignments. Interpersonal and small group skills : Learning in and from groups depends on having and using a whole set of social skills, including leadership, decision-making, trust building, communication, and conflict-management skills. Students don't have these skills inherently, but they can be taught the skills at the same time that subject matter is being covered. These skills stand as a constant shadow curriculum within the process itself.

SOCIOLOGY AS A CAREER
Excerpted from "Careers In Sociology" and reprinted with permission from the American Sociological Association. There are three major areas in which sociologists can find employment:
Teaching
A substantial majority of sociologists teach in one setting or another-high schools, two-year colleges, four-year colleges, or university graduate departments. Sociology is a rewarding field to convey to others. It combines the importance of social relevance with the rigor of a scientific discipline. It includes a broad range of subject matter, since all forms of social behavior are potential objects of sociological study. Sociology is not only being taught to future sociologists and to undergraduate students as part of their liberal arts or vocational education, but it is also included in the programs of many professions, such as law, education, business, medicine, engineering, social work, and nursing. In addition to the standard college and university courses, sociology courses are frequently offered in adult and continuing education programs and are increasingly prominent in the nation's high schools. Teaching sociology is not the same in every setting. It is one thing to give a general introduction to a class of high school students and quite another to give a specialized course to college seniors. Both of these are different from leading an advanced research seminar for graduate students who are well along toward the Ph.D. In each case there are rewards and frustrations. For many persons, teaching seems a desirable occupation which provides considerable job security and the satisfaction of providing knowledge and stimulation to students who respond with respect and appreciation.

Clark and Oswald Hall", edited by R. Helmes-Hayes, Canadian Scholar's Press, 1988. HOW THE DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY CAME INTO BEING S.D. CLARK By stretching a point it could be said that sociology had its beginning, at the University of Toronto at least, in 1915. It was in that year that R.M. MacIver joined the faculty of the university. As a lecturer in political philosophy at the University of Aberdeen before coming to Toronto, as he relates in his autobiography, As a Tale that is Told, MacIver had developed a strong interest in sociology and his continued interest in the area while at Toronto was evident in the extended revision of his sociological study, The Community. It was only after moving to Columbia University in 1927, however, that he gained recognition as a sociologist. At the University of Toronto all his teaching was in the area of political science and he appears to have had no influence upon the later development of sociology at this university. To E.J. Urwick belongs the credit for the establishment of a teaching programme in sociology at the University of Toronto. After retiring from the London School of Economics and Political Science as a professor of social philosophy, Urwick had come to Canada with the intention of settling in Vancouver (he was a man of private means). However, a bitter struggle between two senior professors for the headship of what was then known as the Department of Political Science on MacIver's leaving led Sir Robert Falconer, the president of the university, to persuade Urwick to assume the post. Soon after, he was also appointed Acting Director of the School of Social Work, then known as the Department of Social Science, a position he was to hold (as a result of the prolonged illness of the director) until his retirement from the university .

Abstract
Introduction
Three years have passed since this "technological shift." Beyond various "technophile or technophobic" discourses, what has happened to the integration of ICTs in university teaching in general and in teacher education in particular? An attempt to answer this question requires a few detours in order to establish links among several variables that determine or affect the relation between the individual and these "new" technologies, particularly within the framework of undergraduate education.
