WELCOME, STUDENTS OF THE WORLD; WE HOPE OUR WORK HELPS YOUR RESEARCH, WRITING AND TEACHING, TRYoung, Director IN REMEMBRANCE TR Young The family of T. R. Young (1928-2004) is sad to inform his friends and colleagues that he passed away on Feb 15, 2004 after an extended illness. Dad had a full and rewarding life in academic terms as well as in his personal life. He taught for 50 years and founded the Red Feather Institute for Advanced Studies in 1971. Growing up in the industrial slums of Flint, Michigan, with eight brothers and sisters, he dropped out of high school at 16 to work at A.C. Spark Plug. Dad later went back to school and worked his way through college, earned his teaching certificate and taught at Clio High School and Holly High School. He went on to earn an MA in Sociology at University of Michigan in 1958 and his PhD. in Sociology from University of Colorado in 1967. His twenty year career at Colorado State University is only a small part of the many contributions he made at universities around the country. Dad has made many contributions to American Sociology, and now that he’s gone his work is sure to live on famously or infamously in college classrooms around the country. He has done original work in critical dramaturgy, in applications of Marxist social theory to several other branches of sociology, including chaos theory and complexity theory, central topics in sociology, among which are class dynamics, symbolic interaction, and social change and the forms of crime. Dad has also contributed to the funds of social justice of sections of the American Sociology Association as well as to the local Women’s Crisis Center.

Welcome to the Sociology Department of the University at Buffalo State University of New York
Over the past three years the sociology department hired six new faculty members and added several adjunct appointments of sociologists based in other departments or research centers. The department now includes twelve full-time and six adjunct faculty. With these additions we now offer depth and breadth of concentrations in five areas:
  • Family and the Life Course Law and Society Race and Ethnicity Sociology of Culture Urban and Community
Our graduate program offers MA, PhD, and joint JD/PhD degree programs. Courses in the MA program provide a strong foundation in classic and contemporary theories, research methods, and statistics. MA students are encouraged to focus their course work in preparation to write an MA thesis or project, and they are also encouraged to develop breadth in sociology by choosing a range of courses from our areas of concentration. Planning A Career with a Bachelor's of Arts in Sociology?
One of the most common questions asked of any sociology professor is, "What can I do with a Sociology BA?"
In reality, there are several answers to this question. The American Sociological Association has a web site that
outlines possible career paths and offers tips for how to apply to graduate school -
(http://www.asanet.org/student/career/homepage.html)
First, a Sociology BA provides you with a useful background for some specific jobs. For example, employers in
fields such as criminal justice, human services, or personnel and industrial relations often employ sociology majors
in a variety of capacities in their organizations. Students who pursue graduate training in sociology and related fields
can also expect to find employment in fields such as teaching, research, planning, social work, and public policy.
If you are interested in a career in one of these fields, there are several things you can do to make yourself more attractive
to a prospective employer. You may want to choose your elective courses in sociology (as well as your general electives)

Sociologists study systems made up of relations among people, such as families, formal organizations, ethnic groups, or countries and their politics. The Northwestern Sociology Department concentrates especially on those relations that create and maintain inequalities, looking at the social movements, legal and economic systems, institutions, organizations, and cultural forms that shape, redress, or defend these systems of inequality. We teach courses and do research on relations between men and women, racial and ethnic groups, rich and poor, and workers and managers, and the feminist, civil rights, and labor movements that grow from them. As a discipline, Sociology blends scientific and humanistic approaches. This department uses and teaches four main methods: quantitative survey methods, historical and comparative methods, ethnographic methods, and cultural analysis.
A department is not just an intellectual discipline. It is also a place where people teach and learn, meet requirements for degrees, prepare for and pursue careers, and develop and maintain intellectual, professional, and personal ties. The evidence suggests we are doing these tasks well. The books and articles of the faculty and students regularly win prizes and honors and we do extremely well in national ranking systems. Even our most demanding courses are well received by both majors and nonmajors. And one could make a plausible case for eavedropping on our hallway conversations as a good introduction to the sociological imagination.

Blues club owner to co-teach sociology class
By Sarah Kleiner Long before Stevie Ray Vaughan dreamed of touring as a renowned blues musician, he sat in Antone's on Sixth Street in the late 1970s, hoping to get the chance to play guitar with Albert King, one of the most influential blues guitarists of all time.
Vaughan convinced his friend Clifford Antone, owner of the club, to beg King to let Vaughan play guitar with him. After talking with King twice, Vaughan sat onstage, and his career as a blues master began. "That's the best I ever saw either one of those guys play was right there," Antone said.
