CONCLUSION The Professional Standards Committee of the California Council for the Social Studies was charged with preparing a policy statement, Standards for Social Studies Teachers in the State of California, at the September 11, 1982 meeting of its Board of Directors. The latest revision of this document presented below provides guidelines to assist school boards and school administrators in setting standards for the social studies teachers in their schools. Finally, it is designed for the social studies teacher as he or she continually tries to improve his or her teaching performance in this major educational field. This statement on standards for California social studies teachers has the classroom teacher as its primary focus because teaching is the central and most important element in helping our children learn. The teacher is the key figure in this process of creating and sustaining an intellectual and emotional climate necessary for achieving effective social studies learning.

ABSTRACT It is important that institutions preparing students to teach secondary social studies know why students choose this career when the supply of social studies teachers exceeds the demand. Students from the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and Kansas State University (KSU) were surveyed using a Lickert type scale of one to five for response to questions regarding why they chose to certify as secondary social studies teachers. Findings indicate that the primary reason for electing to prepare for a career in social science and geography teaching is not to support a coaching/social science teaching career contrary to stereotypes. Introduction Whether or not majors are called social science or social studies depends on the institution. Frequently the terms are used interchangeably. For this study we will use the term social science.

A popular belief among teachers is that individuals who teach social studies are coaches and that they are more interested in coaching than in teaching. To be sure, there are many social studies teachers who coach; however, there are many who do not. The same situation probably exists in other content areas; yet, there is no research that indicates the percentage of coaches to non-coaches in the various subject matter areas. A somewhat similar belief expressed by preservice teacher education majors is that one must coach in order to obtain a job teaching social studies. Many times students with no interest or experience in athletics will ask their education advisor if they should learn to coach a sport in order to get a job teaching social studies (Daily, 1999). This perception may have developed due to the fact that these students had social studies teachers in high school who were coaches. Their prior experiences may have given rise to their views that if one wants to teach social studies, then one must coach.

"Give me a stick of chalk and a blackboard and let me teach" is what a friend of mine said to me ten years ago while I was teaching in New York City. Today we find ourselves asking for laser discs, CD-ROMS, computers and high speed Internet connections. Have things really changed that much? With all that is being asked of us; new standards, school report cards and new Regents is the Internet the answer to all of our needs? No, it's probably not. The Internet will not make students study or do their homework but it can be a wonderful resource to both students, teachers and parents. The Internet is a tool in the tool box, a power tool! Like any tool it takes a master craftsman to build a fine piece of artwork and the computer and the Internet is no exception. But even I know how to use a drill and it can make many things easier for me. Not everybody needs to be a master craftsman on the computer to make the Internet a viable tool. In order to make good use of the Internet, or any technology, we need to assess what the real utility is. What educational value does the Internet have?
