Fry, Rosaria Gabriele, Sue Ellen Henry, Lynn M. Hoffman, Lori A. Smolleck The major in education varies as a function of the specific degree students are pursuing. Both the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science in education are offered and the requirements within each program are described below. A major in education within either degree program may prepare students to pursue careers in teaching. However, it also can provide the necessary background and preparation for graduate work in an array of disciplines, as well as careers in law, business, and public service. The bachelor of arts degree with a major in education is designed for students who are interested in studying the process and structure of education and schooling but who are not necessarily interested in pursuing a career in teaching. Students who are interested primarily in obtaining certification in early childhood education or elementary education should pursue the bachelor of science in education degree. Students interested in secondary certification normally seek a degree in the discipline they wish to teach and may either pursue certification only or a dual major in education and the discipline.

Recognized as one of six exemplary social studies/global education programs in the nation (Merryfield, 1992, pp. 17-46), the overall program's aim is to produce individuals who have the knowledge, skills, and instructional strategies, and perspectives to participate in a multiracial, polyethnic, and culturally diverse democratic society that is globally interconnected. Specifically, the program seeks to produce social studies teachers who: - are well-grounded in the historical, philosophical, psychological, sociological, moral and ethical foundations of education - are proficient in the multiple disciplines of history and the social sciences - have an appreciation for the evolution of social studies and social studies education - are aware of and can selectively utilize the developments in materials, programs, discipline content, curricula, technology, instructional strategies, and assessment methods and evaluation techniques

Graduates will not be eligible to teach each of the six separate subject areas. The minor subject area (e.g. History, Political Science) will be listed separately on the teaching license and can be taught as a separate subject in the classroom. Individuals are also prepared to teach interdisciplinary or "fusion" courses in the secondary schools. Fusion courses integrate elements of several Social Studies disciplines and require preparation of a composite nature. American problems, area studies, civics and social problems are a few of the content areas that fall under the Broad Field license. The Broad Field license also provides a foundation for certification in additional Social Studies subject areas at a later date. Secondary admission eligibility requirements: Fall 2006 admission: minimum 54 transferable college-level credits (junior standing); minimum 42 credits in the major; minimum 2.75 cumulative grade point average in the major; 2.75 GPA on all transferable college level course work; passing scores on the

Social studies is a broad term which integrates history, geography, economics, political science, social sciences, behavioral sciences and humanities. Therefore, when searching for Social Studies teaching resources, there is no single area of the Curriculum Laboratory, or in the University Library, which holds all the pertinent resources. For example, information on Canada is dispersed throughout the Curriculum Laboratory collection:
  • 305.8 Multiculturalism in Canada 306.85 Canadian families 320.471 Canadian politics and government 330.971 Canadian economics 349.71 Canadian law 917.1 Geography of Canada 971s History of Canada
Before going to find the actual materials, spend a little bit of time brainstorming for words or phrases which could describe the topic. You may also want to think of broader and narrower terms for that topic. This list of possible words and phrases can now be used in the search for materials on this topic. You may want to use a big dictionary like Webster's Third International Dictionary (CURLB Info Desk 423 Web), or a general encyclopedia like

    What Is Social Studies?
In 1992, the Board of Directors of National Council for the Social Studies, the primary membership organization for social studies educators, adopted the following definition: Social studies is the integrated study of the social sciences and humanities to promote civic competence. Within the school program, social studies provides coordinated, systematic study drawing upon such disciplines as anthropology, archaeology, economics, geography, history, law, philosophy, political science, psychology, religion, and sociology, as well as appropriate content from the humanities, mathematics, and natural sciences. The primary purpose of social studies is to help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world.
