Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

    The course design of Teaching Social Studies rests on the assumption that as social studies teachers engage their students in meaningful learning experiences, they stand as mediators between two distinct communities of inquiry: the discourse communities of history and the social sciences, and the community of learners they nurture in their classrooms. The primary goals of this course are to enable you to:
  • achieve a deeper understanding of both the nature of inquiry in the cluster of disciplines that comprise the social studies and the implications for social studies curriculum and instruction;
  • examine the multiple and often conflicting purposes of social studies instruction;
  • become familiar with the types of information available on the Internet and World Wide Web;
  • develop a heightened awareness of the moral nature of teaching and the particular moral challenges in teaching social studies.

    The B.A.A. in teaching social studies prepares students to teach in grades 5 through 12. Social studies is an interdisciplinary major that requires lower division coursework in each of eight areas: anthropology, economics, geography, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and womens studies. Students then select one of these areas in which to complete an upper division concentration. Students complete additional coursework in education. Minnesota issues a broad area social studies teaching license, rather than a license to teach in a specific area such as history or geography. A Teacher's Guide to Religion in the Public Schools
    by Charles C. Haynes Each day millions of parents from diverse religious backgrounds entrust the education of their children to the teachers in our nation's public schools. For this reason, teachers need to be fully informed about the constitutional and educational principles for understanding the role of religion in public education.
    This teacher's guide is intended to move beyond the confusion and conflict that has surrounded religion in public schools since the early days of the common school movement. For most of our history, extremes have shaped much of the debate. On one end of the spectrum are those who advocate promotion of religion (usually their own) in school practices and policies. On the other end are those who view public schools as religion-free zones. Neither of these approaches is consistent with the guiding principles of the Religion Clauses of the First Amendment.
    Fortunately, however, there is another alternative that is consistent with the First Amendment and broadly supported by many educational and religious groups. The core of this alternative has been best articulated in "Religious Liberty, Public Education, and the Future of American Democracy," a statement of principles issued by 24 national organizations. Principle IV states:
