Sara's parents were really surprised when Sara had a lot of trouble. She was bright and eager, so they thought that reading would come easily to her. It didn't. She couldn't match the letters to their sounds or combine the letters to create words. Sara's problems continued into second grade. She still wasn't reading, and she was having trouble with writing, too. The school asked Sara's mom for permission to evaluate Sara to find out what was causing her problems. Sara's mom gave permission for the evaluation. The school conducted an evaluation and learned that Sara has a learning disability. She started getting special help in school right away.

Resources for Getting Ready for School
      Part 1
by Robin Nobles It's hard to believe that school will be starting soon in some school districts. Where has the summer gone? It's still here, but school is here too! The Internet offers some excellent resources for helping your kids with their school projects. However, here's a word of advice regarding the Internet. Make sure that you can trust the Web sites you use as research tools for your children's school projects. At the bottom of the Web page, look to see who created the Web site. Can that organization or person be trusted to provide accurate and up-to-date information? This first site is where it all begins: learning how to study. If you're lacking basic study and organizational techniques, the rest of your learning experiences will be frustrating. At Study Guides and Strategies, you'll find pointers for effective study habits, managing your time, setting goals, making a schedule, overcoming test anxiety, public speaking, and even how to concentrate and memorize. You'll find help with solving math problems and learn how to prepare for exams and how to take exams, no matter what their format. Joe Landsberger at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, created the site.

This case study focuses on the experience of a Black woman who returned to school for her General Education Diploma (GED) certificate after 32 years away from formal schooling. Through the reflections of Montana and her social network, six women who supported her during and after the GED exam, we are able to see the way in which Montana changes the network and herself over time. We are also able to see some of the ways in which Montana positively affects her children and husband through her pursuit of the GED. The 11 interviews reveal the themes of improved literacy skills, heightened confidence, community activism, and youth leadership, as Montana circulates in her community and congregation a year after the GED. It is also possible to glean from the study the kind of opportunities that adult literacy educators may create by involving a student's social network in the active support of increased literacy skills at the GED level.

One of the most important functions of a teacher is to help students make important connections between the subject matters they study. Too often, the different curricular subjects, such as social studies, language arts, math, and science, are presented to students in a vacuum. Accordingly, many students leave school without ever noticing the vital relationships among all areas of knowledge. Interdisciplinary planning is a great tool for confronting this challenge. There are well-known drawbacks to such planning, of course. These include the time it takes to plan across the curriculum, the need for faculty colleagues who are willing to cooperate, and the constant schedule interruptions for nonacademic activities such as pep rallies or assemblies. Even teachers fortunate enough to have common planning periods know that time is the biggest single obstacle to true and effective interdisciplinary planning. Still, the positive effects of such planning on student learning and understanding make it well worth the teachers' efforts.

www.kidsclick.org/ KidsClick! was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System, as a logical step in addressing concerns about the role of public libraries in guiding their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites. Please note that KidsClick! is not an Internet filter. It does not prevent client web browsers from being used to surf any URL address that the user inputs. It is intended to guide users to good sites; not block them from "bad" sites. However, it could be used in conjunction with a filter product where law allows filters to be used.
