Elsewhere on the Web Britannica's Normandy 1944 D-Day Memorial Foundation At Utah Beach, a strange stroke of good fortune occurred when the assault craft encountered a southerly current that caused them to land in the wrong sector. The shore batteries that would have contested a landing in the original area would undoubtedly have taken a heavy toll. The landing at the new sector was virtually unopposed. Despite that good fortune, Brig. Gen. Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., of the 4th Infantry Division had a tough decision to make. The planned landing area fronted two exits from the beach; the Americans now faced only one. Should they push north and divert the support waves to the correct area, or should they remain on this relatively quiet beach and use the single exit? Roosevelt, the eldest son of former President Theodore Roosevelt and a cousin of the current president, Franklin D. Roosevelt, was the only general officer to land in the first wave. After conferring with his battalion commanders he decided to "start the war from here" and gamble on the one exit he had rather than trying for the proverbial "two in the bush."

Dear parents,
We had our second computer lesson this past Tuesday. Students engaged in an exciting scavenger hunt to develop skills.
Language: We had two language tests this week and worked on creative writing.
Reading: We studied the differences between fact and opinion, studied inferences, and practiced interpreting graphs and tables.
Math: Students learned how to find the area of a rectangle using one inch colored tiles to verify their answers. The concepts were reinforced by my teacher-invented game of “Square.” Students got to catch a small soft ball in the room when they could determine the area of a shape and remember to say square feet or inches. In addition students are learning to use clocks to determine quarter past an hour and quarter of an hour. Students are doing quite well in remembering to bring in their daily math homework. The excitement is continuing as our third graders are striving to pass the four min. 100 fact test. About six have made it thus far.
Bible: We are still in the study of Moses. Students continue to sit in rapt attention as the thrilling story unfolds. Ask your child to relate to you what they have learned in Bible daily. We often get into some very interesting discussions as I try to relate these stories to present day life.

Saturday, August 09, 2003 Bringing Induction to the Teacher: A Blended Learning Model - Craig Barnum, THE Journal
As we bring new teachers into the district, how do we optimize our time during induction week so that we can focus on our critical goals and not be sidetracked by so-called "administrivia"?.... We were committed to changing induction from an event to a process, but we needed a model to make this happen. While we loved the power and convenience that e-learning offered, we also knew that for our most important and complex ideas we would need some face-to-face time, as well. So, we adopted a blended learning model that com-prises both electronic and face-to-face interaction. Our blended learning model has four pieces:

Hi-Tech Schools: A Reality in Greenwood

Greenwood School District 50 has one school that sets itself apart from all the others. It's unique to South Carolina and copies only a few others across the nation.... But it's the security features and technology at Westview Middle that really make the school stand out. Security cameras continuously record activity in the hallways, and if there's a problem in the classroom, teachers can simply push a button on a pin they will wear, alerting administrators to a problem and immediately beginning to videotape activities within the classroom.... Each classroom is also equipped with television monitors teachers will use for distance learning and instructional videos. Shorer says teachers will be able to access "thousands of video clips that they can use to enhance the curriculum."

The Art of War
This week, the war in Iraq has brought both victories and hardships for those involved in these military operations, playing out both predicted and unexpected turns in events. Certainly, as this war continues to demonstrate, war is rarely a clean-cut affair no matter how much Americans and others on all sides may wish it so. A force's performance in war relies on the blending of both art and science to develop military prowess that, overall, surpasses that of one's enemy. Essentially, the science of war is about weapons technology, while the art of war relates to the experience and character of military personnel, particularly of the commanders in charge. After all, the commanders are the ones responsible for developing and implementing military strategy, as well as providing food, equipment, ongoing training, effective communications and a sense of solidarity to the troops under their command. Likely, during the first week of the war, you heard a lot about the military's weapons and equipment, such as smart bombs and fighter jets. Last week's efforts and news coverage, however, highlighted more of the artful side of war.

The recent and more aggressive push by President George W. Bush and his administration to prepare for war against Iraq has caused a rift between some alliance nations. Efforts by the United States and some other NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) nations to begin planning for military assistance to Turkey in the event of war with Iraq has brought formal protest by some of its members. On Monday, February 10, 2003, France and Germany blocked moves to grant military aid to Turkey on grounds that to accept it would mean NATO had accepted the inevitability of war with Iraq, which continues to be debated by diplomats and protested by millions of citizens worldwide. The aid package would include early warning aircraft, missile defenses and anti-biochemical units. Turkey - NATO's only Muslim nation - then invoked a treaty clause, which requires the alliance to consult if any member feels its security threatened. Although France, Germany and, now Belgium, say they don't object to ensuring Turkey's safety, they do believe the aid would hamper the search for a peaceful solution to the Iraq crisis. They further argue that while the U.S. alone may choose to engage in war with Iraq, the NATO alliance may prefer to stand clear of the conflict. The United States, however, has termed the three countries' veto incompatible with the central tenet of NATO solidarity: an attack on one is an attack on all.
