Saudi Arabia Diversity and Social Stratification By contrast, the Hijaz, being home to the holy sites of Islam and host to pilgrimage traffic, was directly tied historically into the Ottoman bureaucratic system. The populations of Mecca, Medina, and Jiddah have been infused for centuries by descendants of foreign Muslims who had come for the pilgrimage and stayed. Mecca had substantial Indian and Indonesian communities, and Jiddah had descendants of Persians and Hadramis (from Hadramaut, or Aden), as well as Africans and people from other parts of the Arabic-speaking world. The cities of the Hijaz benefited by donations from pious Muslims throughout the world and became major centers of Islamic scholarship and learning. Jiddah was virtually without peer as the commercial center in the kingdom until the 1960s, and in all the Hijaz towns, mercantile families comprised a powerful elite. Social stratification was linked to this population diversity. Tribal affiliation constituted a major status category based on bloodline. At the top of the tribal status category were the qabila , families that could claim purity of descent from one of two eponymous Arab ancestors, Adnan or Qahtan, and could therefore claim to possess asl , the honor that stemmed from nobility of origin. To some extent, tribal status could be correlated to occupation, yet manual labor in general, but particularly tanning hides and metal work, was considered demeaning for individuals of

THE ECOLOGY OF SOCIAL STRATIFICATION Topics covered in this lecture: 1) What is stratification? 2) What are the main ecological explanations for stratification? 3) Illustrative examples: Pomo Indian trade feasts; role of irrigation in state formation What is Stratification? Stratification can be defined various ways, but most commonly refers to institutionalized inequalities in power, wealth, and status between categories of persons within a single social system (e.g., classes, castes, ethnic groups) Status inequalities between individuals are found everywhere, so how much inequality does it take to qualify as a stratified society? On one hand, inequalities based on personal qualities (charisma, economic or social skills, etc.) do not constitute stratification, since they aren't defined by membership in a particular category So, if in a hunting band the best hunter or the healer/shaman is held in high regard and has preferential access to some resources, this ain't social stratification On other hand, all human societies known to date exhibit institutionalized inequalities based on age, and most (all?) have gender-based inequalities as well; so by the general definition given above, all known human societies are stratified

The Biosocial Female Choice Theory of Social Stratification* No topic is more central to sociology, economics, political science, and probably even history than social stratification. At least since the 1960s, two theories have dominated the study of social stratification: functional theory and conflict theory (Lipset, 1976:314; Betz, Davis, and Miller, 1978:399; Blumberg, 1978:vi; Lenski and Lenski, 1982:53; Kerbo, 1983:88; Thio, 1986:210; Short, 1991:90). (A theory in the tradition of Max Weber is sometimes mentioned as forming a third theoretical tradition in the study of social stratification [Grimes, 1991:147; Lopreato and Crippen, 1999:209].) Functional theory envisions social stratification as a by-product of societal organization. Basically, persons who attain high social status are assumed to possess skills and talents that are most important for the efficient functioning of a particular society (Hall, 1969:298; Rothman, 1993:33). Low wages and minimal prestige are normally relegated to persons possessing the fewest skills and talents that are of value to a society (Davis and Moore, 1945). Overall, functional theorists argue that persons who possess the prized skills and talents move into the most prestigious occupations, and that they along with their family members thereby garner the highest wages and other social rewards.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. David Gordon spent a significant portion of his research life developing a radical theory of institutional change. Social structures of accumulation (SSA) theory is the result of David's efforts, along with those of his close friends and colleagues Richard Edwards, Michael Reich, Samuel Bowles, and Thomas Weisskopf. At the heart of SSA theory are two central claims: (1) owing to class conflict, capitalist institutional arrangements contain endogenous contradictions, and (2) these contradictions eventually produce crises that provide the impetus for institutional change. Any new theory that is path-breaking and ambitious inevitably leaves some ideas underdeveloped. The notion of "endogenous contradictions" is one of the underdeveloped ideas in SSA theory. There are several aspects to its underdevelopment. First, the term is never given a very precise meaning. It seems reasonably clear from the writings of SSA theorists that the term "contradiction" is not meant to be merely a synonym for conflict, struggle, or antagonism.2 Nor does the term appear to be used synonymously with crisis. But beyond this, its meaning remains rather vague in statements of the theory.3

Social Stratification in Bangladesh has its roots in the past. Although the dynamics of religion largely shaped the context of its development, the relevance of economic and political factors is no less significant. The Hindu society in Bengal was built along the caste lines although the widely known four-fold classification brahman ksatriya vaisya and sudra did not emerge in the classical manner. The two middle castes, Ksatriya and Vaisya, were not visible in the way they were in other parts of India. In Bengal the main caste division was between the Brahmans and the non-Brahmans. The latter category was the admixture of different sub-castes that emerged through unregulated interactions of different castes. The Brahmans occupied the highest position of the social ladder. As there were geographical divisions among the Brahmans ( radha and Barendra Brahman), there was another category called Kaibarta Brahman. Some proverb says that the local Brahmans were not skilled in vedas and that vacuum was filled in by the Brahmans who migrated from northern India and became known as Kaibarta Brahman The non-Brahman sub-castes were broadly divided into three hierarchical categories: superior admixture, medium admixture and inferior admixture. The first category included twenty sub-castes, including

    http://www.asia-europe-institute.org/Research/proj03.html
Social Interaction and Stratification Scale Head of Project: Associate Prof. Dr. Shamsulbahriah Ku Ahmad The theoretical basis of the Cambridge Social interaction and Stratification Scale (CAMSIS) is the idea that differential association is an essential feature of social stratification. The CAMSIS measure of social stratification challenges conventional ideas in stratification theory about the existence and nature of social classes, and of a distinction between social class and social status. Like most stratification measures, the CAMSIS scale uses occupational group as its basic unit as occupation is still the single most significant indicator of an individual's location in the overall structure of advantage and disadvantage and social identity, and incorporates gender and ethnicity. The Malaysian project constitutes one version of the CAMSIS measure of social stratification in developing countries. Associate Professor Dr. Shamsulbahriah Ku Ahmad
    Deputy Executive Director
Dr. Shamsulbahriah Ku Ahmad has spent the last fifteen years at the University of Malaya, where she specializes in economics, development studies and sociology. Her main area of expertise is the Political Economy of Development, specializing in labour issues and social stratification, with a research focus which includes inequality and distribution, occupational structure and social stratification migration and labour mobility.
