THE LIFE AND TIMES OF THE PROPHET VERNON JOHNS: FATHER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT Another book banned by racism The Rev. Vernon Johns Dr. Patrick L. Cooney Henry W. Powell E-mail: plcooney@verizon.net Sponsored by: Vernon Johns Society Dedicated to: Vernon Johns This is the only full-scale biography of the father of the civil rights movement, the Reverend Vernon Johns, a man censored and banned in his time... a man still too nonracist and truthful for our current politically correct crowd. Who can doubt that it was good to be there, high upon Hermon, in those Transfigured Moments! -Vernon Johns They hate him who reproves in the gate, They abhor him who speaks the truth. Amos 5:10 The only difficulty was that I was rated as sassy. I just had to talk back at established authority and that established authority hated backtalk worse than barbed-wire pie.

Another side to history...
Overview Off-Site Links
Who reads history, anyway? Why bother?
(Why even bother to read the following paragraphs?) Well, sometimes it's interesting. There's another side to history, not generally taught in school, where women and men (like us) had a hand in making history. For their boldness, they suffered. Their stories survive, in fragments. For example... Most people don't realize that there was a revolution in England in the mid-1600s. In the course of a decade or so, betrayed by the men it helped push into power, the revolution lost steam and was finally crushed. Many people who were active in the revolution fled to the Americas. Of those who remained in England, many were imprisoned, their property was seized, and they were forced to live out their lives quietly, often in poverty, and lost in the margins of history. One group survived intact. Their numbers actually grew in the first decades after the revolution. By the early 1700s, when the generation who remembered the revolution had died, and indeed when religious and civil liberties were finally becoming more widely accepted, this group had turned inwards. Whether farming on the land, working in commerce, or following other trades, these people, "in scorn called Quakers," began to prosper. They lived quietly and raised their children as best they could, sometimes pulling up roots to seek a better life elsewhere. Typically, they didn't boast of their early history.

Centre for the Study of Social and Political Movements
Although the Centre was established in 1992, the study of social and political movements at Kent has a long and distinguished history, beginning with Frank Parkin's work on middle class radicalism and the peace movement, and Krishan Kumar's work on revolutions. In recent years, the Centre has continued to bring together work on a variety of contemporary forms of social and political movements and collective action, but with some emphasis upon environmental movements. Members of the Centre are actively involved in international networks of social movement researchers through their participation in the relevant Research Committees of the ISA and the ESA, the European Consortium for Political Research, and research networks such as that based around IFRESI at the University of Lille / CNRS.
Full-time permanent staff associated with the Centre are:
o Chris Rootes (Director)
o Frank Furedi (SSPSSR)
o Chris Pickvance (Urban Studies / SSPSSR)
o Larry Ray (SSPSSR)
o Richard Sakwa (Politics)
o Thomas Saalfeld (Politics)
o Iain Wilkinson (SSPSSR).

Institutional: US$381/£231 Individual: US$99/£60 of CrossRef SMS Opening Statement - written by the editors for the first edition of the journal, April 2002. Aims and Scope: Social Movement Studies is an international and inter-disciplinary journal providing a forum for academic debate and analysis of extra-parliamentary political, cultural and social movements throughout the world. Social Movement Studies has a broad, inter-disciplinary approach designed to accommodate papers engaging with any theoretical school and which study the origins, development, organisation, values, context and impact of historical and contemporary movements active in all parts of the world. We understand our inter-disciplinary approach to include both contributions that engage with particular schools of thought relevant to social movements and popular protest and contributions that extend across disciplinary boundaries. Social Movement Studies aims to publish soundly researched analyses and to re-establish writing as intervention. From this broad and inclusive perspective we are interested in contributions dealing with social movements, popular protests and networks that support protest. This includes contributions dealing with but not restricted to:

OISR.ORG POSTER EXHIBITION
Images of Japanese Labor and Social Movement in the Post-1945 Japan Ohara Institute for Social Research owns about 1400 posters of labor and social movements in the post-1945 period. Many of the posters are those in the second half of the 1940s and the 1950s when labor unions, legalized for the first time in 1945, engaged in intense struggles with employers and the government in order to win better wages and working conditions. We present a part of our 1400 collection in the "slide show format" (each poster is shown for 12 seconds). Posters are classified by the names of confederations and by industries. Titles and organizations of the presented posters are translated into English. Please note that they are rough translations and, in some cases, may not be 100 percent accurate. Please do not cite or quote these translations without our permission. POSTER EXHIBITION in Japanese Posters of Labor Unions Confederations

Doing Democracy: The MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements
The MAP Model for Organizing Social Movements by Bill Moyer
with JoAnn McAllister, Mary Lou Finley and Steven Soifer
contributions by Nancy Gregory and Juliette Beck Citizen activism has achieved many positive results. But the road to success for social movements is often complex, usually lasting many years, with few guides for evaluating the precise stage of a movement's evolution to determine the best way forward. One week the news will be alive with stories of thousands of people in the streets; the next week, the thousands are gone. But has the movement withered and died – or has it just changed shape? Through understanding and analyzing social movements, Doing Democracy shows that the apparent ups and downs of a movement generally follow a pattern - which can be used to plan and carry out social action that is even more effective. Beginning with an overview of social movement theory and the MAP (Movement Action Plan) model, Doing Democracy outlines the eight typical stages of social movements, the four roles of activists, and case studies from the civil rights, anti-nuclear energy, Central America, gay/lesbian, women's health (breast cancer), and globalization movements.

Dear friends of the MST, The nation of Brazil is living through a serious crisis and is in grave danger. The danger that threatens our nation is the result of the implementation of neoliberal policies that favor only national and international finance capital and the huge corporations that are dedicated to exports. This policy worsens poverty, social inequality, and misery. read more
