WSF 2005: CRIS Campaign statement for the Social Movements Assembly
Communications is a core theme at this year's World Social Forum. It is a core theme because the demand for a better, more equitable communications environment is emerging as the demand of a new social movement for communication rights. The information and communications sector has become a strategic part of the global market economy. It is a sector characterised by gross imbalances: increasing concentration of the media, information property rules that favour the big corporations, privatisation of the means of communication, and new technologies of mass surveillance. There is a growing communications divide between one third of the world's population with the power to communicate globally, instantaneously and the other two thirds who barely have access to electricity and for whom the Internet is an unknown world. The Campaign for Communication Rights in the Information Society (CRIS) believes that communication is a fundamental human right and is mobilizing around a common agenda for action and has identified a series of communication rights priorities for 2005.

So
Social Chauvinism Aggressive or fanatical patriotism, particularly during time of war, in support of one's own nation (eg. government, culture, etc) versus other nation(s). During WWI, nearly every political party took a social-chauvinist stand; with few exceptions. Most Socialists gave up their beliefs in favour of "defense of the fatherland", and turned to social-chauvinism; most notably the German Social Democratic Party Two outstanding examples of Communists who fought against social-chauvinism during WWI were Rosa Luxemburg and Karl Liebknecht . They stressed that the only violence that should be used is the violence necessary to overthrow one's own government. They agitated tirelessly in their nation to show that common social relations united workers across any national boundaries and that the only blood the proletariat should shed is the blood to gain their freedom. Social control and Integration Every society contains class , ethnic, gender and other differences, from which arise various kinds of conflict. Naturally, some of these conflicts need to be moderated if the society is to survive, and thus in every society, individuals with various differences have to in some way be socialised and integrated into the institutions and fabric of that society. This is as true of a hypothetical post-revolutionary socialist society as it is of capitalism ; to suppose that a society could exist which does not require any process of social control and integration is

The Friends of the Victor Serge Library
We provide support for the Victor Serge Library, a project based in Moscow.
The library is named after the socialist writer and fighter against totalitarianism, Victor Serge. It aims to acquaint people in Russia with the great wealth of radical and alternative ideas that were forbidden in Soviet times and are hardly heard in present-day Russia, including the many strands of democratic and libertarian socialism which opposed totalitarianism. The library was set up in May 1997 by a group of Moscow scholars, journalists and political activists with the support of International Victor Serge Foundation. It is the only place in Russia where readers can find works written from critical perspectives on social science, Marxism, anarchism, trade-unionism, human rights, environmentalism, and the history of workers' and liberation movements in various countries. The library is also used as a sort of club where discussions, lectures, seminars and gathering of various left-wing organisations take place. From 2002, under an agreement between the Praxis Research and Education Centre and the Public Library Authority for the South-East District of Moscow, the Victor Serge Memorial Collection comprises the main resource of the District Library No. 10 at Verkhnyaya Khokhlovka.

The Nippon Foundation and the groups it supports, on the other hand, are active in such a wide variety of fields that it is nearly impossible to provide a simple definition of just what we are. It would be most accurate to say that we are something like a philanthropic department store. And as with any good department store, we provide a map of what we have to offer. National Conference on Organized Resistance
The National Conference on Organized Resistance (NCOR) has been happening every winter on the campus of American University in Washington DC since 1998. It aims to provide a space for activists to meet each other, have in-depth discussions, analyze our strategies, tactics, beliefs, learn a few new skills, and give everyone a lot to think about after an inspiring weekend. Activists of all ages or levels of experience are welcome, as are curious non-activists and anyone looking to resist systems of oppression and create something new! This year's NCOR took place on February 3-6, 2005. Please check back in the fall for info on next year's conference. We plan to issue our call for workshop proposals in Aug/Sept 2005. Previous Conference Sites:
