From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
American Civil Rights Movement is one of the most famous social movements of the 20th century . Here, Martin Luther King is giving his " I Have a Dream " speech, in front of the Lincoln Memorial during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom Social movements are a type of group action . They are large scale informal groupings of individuals and/or organizations focused on specific political or social issues, in other words, on carrying out a social change Modern social movements became possible through education (the wider dissemination of literature ), and increased mobility of labour due to the industrialisation and urbanisation of 19th century societies. The freedom of expression, education and relative economic independence prevalent in the modern Western culture is responsible for the unprecedented number and scope of various contemporary social movements. Political science and sociology have developed a variety of theories and empirical research on social movements. For example, some research in political science highlights the relation between popular movements and the formation of new political parties as well as discussing the function of social movements in relation to agenda setting and influence on politics.

The Social and Cultural Movements Group, Edge Hill College, UK 2nd International Conference: Imaging Social Movements Thursday 1st July to Saturday 3rd July 2004 Making Social Movements: The British Marxist Historians and the study of social movements
Call for Papers Following the success of its 2002 conference: Making Social Movements: The British Marxist Historians, the Social Movements Group is organising a 2nd International Conference for Summer 2004, exploring the theme of the construction of images, representations and articulations of social movements. The effectiveness of social movements has always relied not only upon the political activity and its theoretical conception, but also upon its cultural representation and aesthetics. The changing media, cultural and technological landscape has transformed the means and media by which social movements can create and contest their 'image', and how others create and contest images of them. This conference aims to bring together social movement researchers across the social sciences and humanities in considering questions of conception, process and outcomes in the imaging social movements - past, present and future. Proposed indicative strands include: Social Movements and the Internet
Social Movements and Popular Film

THEORIES OF SOCIAL MOVEMENTS AND THEIR CURRENT DEVELOPMENT IN SOVIET SOCIETY
Sergey Mamay
Part 1. Theories of social movements
Theories of social movements are closely connected with the general problems of society's development. To analyse social movements separately, in abstraction from the social structure, is to limit the problem by superficial analysis, which is not fruitful and does not allow us to understand the nature of social movements. For that reason all the serious theories of social movements are based on general approaches to the principles of society's development. The question of classification of the theories of social movements is complicated, as there are many points of view on this question. We consider that four main approaches can be distinguished and that these four approaches are:
  • 1. `collective behaviour' theory,
  • 2. `resource mobilisation' theory,
  • 3. `new social movements' interpretations,
  • 4. `the action-identity' approach. Let us first consider briefly the characteristic of these four approaches. `Collective behaviour' accounts are still recognised as an orthodoxy in studies of social movements. Among the followers of this approach we can name such Chicago school sociologists as Ralph Turner and Lewis Killian; Talcott Parsons and his structural functionalism, and Neil Smelser in whose

    America in the 1960s
The most active period of social movement rhetoric in the 20th century was the 1960s. This period roughly begins with a build-up from the Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka Supreme Court Decision of 1954. This desegregation decision began the Civil Rights movement. By 1960, multiple movements are gathering steam in the United States. After 1970 and the Kent State killings, social movements began to decline and by the fall of Saigon that ended the Vietnam War in 1975 the most active period was over. Of course, movements continue to our day just as there have always been some active reform movements in America. But the most active period was over.
Conditions Given Voice in 60s Movements
The rhetoric of the 60s movements had several conditions of the society that it attempted to convert into power for the movement.

Electronic citizenship and global social movements by Liza Tsaliki
This paper is an attempt at a more systematic study of the impact of new social movements on participatory politics and citizenship at a European level. It presents the empirical findings from my work on ecological NGOs and addresses the following questions:
    • In what ways is the Internet conducive to discursive democracy when used by grassroots organizations, and more specifically by environmental groups in Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, Britain and Greece? What kind of information is offered on the Web sites of some environmental organizations in the five countries? How is this related with the level of Internet development in these countries?
It concludes that ecological organizations use the Internet for publicity purposes and for diffusion of information mainly, while the dimensions of discursive, interactive communication and the establishment of 'nexuses of global action' are still underplayed.

The paper presents the empirical findings from my work on ecological NGOs. It will start by giving the reasons for the choice of the category Environment amongst new social movements. This will be followed by a discussion of the relationship between environmentalism and globalization. It will continue by offering a brief account of the level of Internet development in the countries under examination before it embarks on the website analysis of various environmental organizations in Finland, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, Spain and Greece. It will conclude with some thoughts about the web presence of the NGOs under inspection.
