Optimistic outlook for soccer teams despite no golds
Click here for more on this story Latest: Sunday October 01, 2000 01:15 AM SYDNEY, Australia So there I was on Friday night, waiting for Chilean superstar Ivan (Bam Bam) Zamorano to walk through the interview area, waiting to show off my Spanish and ask him a question: "¿Estaba sorprendido por la calidad de los estadounidenses?" (Were you surprised by the quality of the Americans?) Silly me. Out came Zamorano, whose team had just beaten the U.S. for the bronze medal. He had looked like an engaging guy during Chile's pre-game national anthem, which he belted out with more enthusiasm than any athlete I've ever seen. (Watch him sometime. It's fun.) But now he stormed past, emitted a guttural snort and slammed the door, blowing off the media altogether. Ivan, babe, your team

Auckland’s “A Team” and the visiting Queensland women’s squad fought out a lively scoreless draw on North Harbour Stadium’s outer oval on September 20, the visitors’ second drawn game in three days.
On Sunday, they drew 1-1 with Waikato-Bay of Plenty in atrocious conditions at Porritt Stadium, Lynda Hemming’s goal for the home side countering that struck by Queensland’s Melissa Andreatta, who again impressed for the Maroons in a match played in temperatures rarely experienced by the well-wrapped-up visitors, Mother Nature having decided to mark their week-long visit by unleashing winter’s last hurrah for 2005 on Godzone at the same time.

Many Japanese go to the sea for surfing and scuba diving in the summer, while skiing and snowboarding are popular winter pursuits. MAJOR SPORTS
Baseball is one of the most popular spectator sports in Japan. There are 12 professional baseball teams, six in the Central League and six in the Pacific League. The teams in each league play about 140 games each during the season, at the end of which the two league winners meet in the Japan Series. In recent years, more and more Japanese players have been moving to the United States to play in Major League Baseball. Two of the most famous are Suzuki Ichiro and Matsui Hideki. Amateur baseball is also popular, and many schoolchildren play the game through local Little Leagues or school baseball clubs. The National High-School Baseball Championship, which is held twice a year, is fought out among schools that have survived tough qualifying rounds to represent their prefectures.

    Olympic Soccer Medalists
    History
Soccer was supposed to be on the program for the first modern Olympics in 1896, but it was cancelled because no teams entered, although some players showed up. The sport officially entered the Olympics in 1900 and it's been on the program ever since. The Olympic stand against professionalism led directly to the creation of soccer's World Cup tournament. After several countries withdrew from the 1928 Olympic tournament because their professionals weren't allowed to play, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) decided to hold its own quadrennial world championship, beginning in 1929. In 1984, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow professionals to compete, but only if they hadn't taken part in World Cup play, which still left out most of the world's best players. The rule was amended in 1992 to allow professional players under 23 years of age in the Olympics. Since 1996, each team has been allowed to have three professional players over 22. Women's soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996.

According to Chuck DeLaney, Dean of the world's largest photography school, "These tips will help you get great photos regardless of whether you are at an Olympic swim meet or your child's soccer game." 1. Fill the frame. Try to fill the frame with a player's body, rather than simply showing him or her as a distant speck. The type of picture you're looking for is a closeup action shot. A shot that fills the frame with just one or two players in the heat of a basketball game or a gymnast swinging from the parallel bars.

The horrors of Saddam's 'sadist' son
    By Tom Farrey
    ESPN.com
In the history of the world, an expanse that covers Genghis Khan and Adolf Hitler and other despots both past and present, there is no shortage of absolute rulers whose human rights records compare with that of today's designated pariah, Saddam Hussein. Since being charged with overseeing the Iraqi National Olympic Committee in 1984, Uday Hussein allegedly has made sport of imprisoning, torturing and murdering athletes. There may never have been a sports official, though, as brutal as his son, Uday. As president of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee, Uday allegedly tortures athletes for losing games. He sticks them in prison for days or months at a time. Has them beaten with iron bars. Caned on the soles of their feet. Chained to walls and left to stay in contorted positions for days. Dragged on pavement until their backs are bloody, then dunked in sewage to ensure the wounds become infected. If Uday stops by a player's jail cell, he might urinate on his bowed, shaven head. Just to humiliate him. This is the picture that emerges of Uday Saddam Hussein from ESPN.com interviews in the United States and England with former Iraqi national team athletes in several sports. Some of them claim they were personally tortured. All of them say they lived in fear that they would be punished at Uday's whim.

Sonsabitches cancel Baseball?! BASEBALL! Then I read that softball great Lisa Fernandez (Three Gold Medals) laments" I feel one person, the president of the IOC, a person from Europe, has taken it upon himself to ruin the lives of millions, actually billions of women. Millions? Billions? Lives ruined? Oh, please. Now I don't care. Posted by JamesPh. at July 10, 2005 08:48 PM
Comments Yeah, you could see this one coming. The girl's fast pitch games is totally, and I mean TOTALLY, dominated by the Americans. Every other country is competing for silver. Unless your American, there is no interest in watching our girls stomp yet another team into the diamond. I mean really, in the warmup to the olympics, the best college teams in the US were lucky to even score a run against our olympic team. (many of the best were shut out). Our women should have thrown a few games I guess.
