"Expectations are so high in this country in some Olympic sports that anything less than a gold medal is perceived as failure," Hirt said. "Can you imagine the reaction if the first Dream Team in basketball had not won? What will happen if the women's soccer team doesn't bring home a gold medal or at least play very well in Sydney?" Hirt has done research on how fans' self-esteem rises and falls with a favorite team's winning or losing. He said a major difference in this area at the Olympics involves nationality.

Israel at the Sydney Olympics 2000
The Israeli delegation to the Helskinki Games
Expectations have changed dramatically since Israel first competed in the Olympics in Helsinki in 1952. Then, the most notable achievement was by Yoav Ra'anan, who took ninth place in springboard diving. Over the next four decades, participating was the main objective. The darkest hour of the Olympics was in 1972, when eleven members of the Israeli delegation were murdered by Palestinian terrorists in Munich. The Games resumed after a 24-hour hiatus, but the surviving members of the Israeli delegation accompanied their fellow sportsmen on their final journey home. Despite the tragedy in Munich, Israel remained loyal to the Olympic ideal, and returned to the 1976 Games in Montreal, where Esther Roth-Shachamarov, whose coach Amitsur Shapira had been slain in Munich, clinched an historic sixth place in the 100 meters hurdles the best Israeli Olympic track result to date. As more years passed, the belief that an Israeli athlete could win an Olympic medal became credible. In Seoul in 1988, Israel's Flying Dutchmen crew, Yoel Sela and Eldad Amir, achieved a laudable fourth place finish, despite forfeiting a race held on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

August 29, 2004 ATHENS Thousands of Argentine fans, still weary from celebrating their basketball team's upset of Team USA, showed up 12 hours later for an unusually early men's Olympic soccer final. Their bleary eyes witnessed history. Argentina, off the foot of rising star Carlos Tevez, beat Paraguay, 1-0, yesterday for its first gold medal in any sport in 52 years. ADVERTISEMENT The Argentine men's basketball also struck gold later in the day. The last time the Argentine anthem, "Oid Mortales," was heard at the Olympics was in Helsinki in 1952, when Argentina won in double sculls rowing. "I am very happy we could give Argentina this gold after such a long wait," said defender Gabriel Heinze. "We wanted to win Argentina the one prize it had never won, and so much deserved. To outscore opponents, 17-0, is perfect."Paraguay also made history, winning its first medal in Olympic history. The team dedicated the silver medal to the families of the 400 people who were killed in a supermarket fire in Asuncion earlier this month. "Even if we could provide just a drop of happiness for those families, it is something," said Paraguay coach Carlos Jara. "They were in our thoughts and we share this special medal with all the people of our country." Tevez is expected to get contract offers topping $20 million from European clubs after scoring a tournament-best eight goals in six games. His stocky build and No. 10 jersey have drawn comparisons to Diego Maradona. Tevez tapped in a Mauro Rosales cross from close range in the 18th minute before a crowd of 41,118. Argentina had other good chances, including a Cesar Delgado shot that was cleared off the line in the 75th minute by captain Carlos Gamarra.

Baarts nets a school-record eight game-winning goals and Charles is honored as the NCSC, WCC and Far West Region Coach of the Year. The men’s three-year reign on the conference crown comes to an end, but they reach postseason’s second round and finish with a 13-7-0 overall record. Coach Captains Roster Schedule ... Haverford Home Page History Haverford became the first intercollegiate men's soccer program in the country to record 700 all-time wins with a 7-0 victory against Neumann on September 7, 2002. The oldest organized college soccer team in the nation, the Fords' rich tradition began a century ago when Richard Gummere '02 entered a club from the college in a local league. The soccer program soon gained national prominence when Haverford defeated Harvard University, 1-0, in the first modern-day intercollegiate soccer match on April 1, 1905. The Crimson's team had been started by Haverfordians who went to Cambridge for graduate school. Haverford was one of the top teams in the nation in the first half of the century, often winning the national title over an essentially Ivy League schedule. The 1945 team was undefeated. The soccer squad was a regional power in the 1950's under its great Scottish mentor, U.S. Olympic coach and Soccer Hall of Famer Jimmy Mills. As late as 1960, two Fords, Harold Taylor and Gyula Kovacsics, both '61, were named to a first-team All-American eleven that included players from major universities. In the mid-'70's, Haverford became a frequent NCAA tournament qualifier and won the Middle Atlantic Conference Southern Division five times between 1976 and '82 under coach Dave Felsen '66, now headmaster at Friends Central School near Philadelphia, and Stanley "Skip" Jarocki '69.
