    • Who We Are By the Numbers A History of Excellence ... Cal South Establishes New ODP Scholarship Fund What is the Olympic Development Program (ODP)? For the 2004/2005 seasonal year, there are 14 age groups within the ODP as follows: Age Group Date of Birth U13 - Boys and Girls '92 January 1 - December 31, 1992 U14 - Boys and Girls '91 January 1 - December 31, 1991 U15 - Boys and Girls '90 January 1 - December 31, 1990 U16 - Boys and Girls '89 January 1 - December 31, 1989 U17 - Boys and Girls '88 January 1 - December 31, 1988 The higher up the ladder a player progresses, the more intense the training and playing becomes. The regional teams experience both interregional and international competitions on an annual basis. A pool of players is selected for each age group with the rosters changing each year as players develop at different rates. Regional players have traveled to Florida, Las Vegas, San Diego, France, England, Costa Rica, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. While the ODP is one vehicle for development and identification, it is not the only method. All programs work together to help the players attain their ultimate potential. The ODP does provide a systematic method that allows players to advance as far as their abilities allow. It serves as a form of self-evaluation in a system that is recognized by coaches at all levels.

Women's Soccer History in the USA: An Overview
Maintained by Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net Women’s soccer has had an unusual genesis in the United States. As the 21st century commences, the US finds itself as arguably the top country in the world for women’s soccer, both in terms of participation and in international competition. Yet, women’s soccer got off to a fairly late start in this country. Women’s leagues existed in Europe as far back as 1930, and international competitions date back to the 1950s. In the United States, however, organized women’s soccer did not take root until the late 1970’s, and even this was partly an outgrowth of the Title IX legislation of 1972 mandating gender equity in education. Varsity college teams began to spread in the early 1980’s, and a national squad was only established in 1985. The first national women’s league did not launch until 1995, and it was not until 2001 that the first professional women’s league made its debut. But when women’s soccer did finally take off in the US, it was with a vengeance, fueled by enormous participation at the youth and amateur levels, rapidly growing interest by mainstream sport fans and the media, and the growing acceptance of women’s sports in general. After two World Cup titles and Olympic gold and silver medals, the US dominates the world in the women’s game, leading the way as it takes root throughout the rest of the world, with all the cultural implications that follow. But the story leading to this pinnacle of success is an interesting one.

http://www.sover.net/~spectrum/saintlouis.html
History of Soccer in St. Louis
Maintained by Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net When the North American Soccer League began play in 1967, the St. Louis Stars, a charter franchise, pioneered a developmental policy that emphasized recruitment and development of local American talent, bucking the league’s trend towards employing aging international stars. More recently, St. Louis has been primarily known for its indoor soccer teams, and the city’s importance in the national soccer scene has been muted as fans look for the possibility of a Major League Soccer team to bring the region back into prominence. But the city still enjoys a reputation as a key part in the development of US soccer throughout the early years of the sport in the country.
Beginnings
The Kensingtons won the first two league championships, followed by Blue Bells and St. Teresa’s. Later, the first dynasty was established by St. Leo’s who won nine consecutive championships between 1905/06 and 1913/14. St. Leo’s was originally composed entirely of members of the St. Leo’s Sodality, a church men’s organization. After the team opened its memberships to outsiders, it began its championship run. They were also the first team to tour the East, as they played a series of New Jersey teams in tours during this time. St. Louis soccer grew very early on, and the leagues have been strong from the beginning, but the city also had a very independent tradition, and even after the local association joined the United States Soccer Federation, it remained somewhat aloof, not fully integrating itself into the national body until 1918.

An Overview of American Soccer History
By Dave Litterer The American Soccer History Archives This page is a detailed historical overview of United States soccer from its roots in the 19th century to the present day.
Origins, 1609-1862
The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. And eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This, prompted by many letters to the editors of the newspapers in the midlands, the near north, and London regions of England, and led to a series of meetings, which culminated in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863. This group attempted to establish a series of rules, which would please everyone, but they couldn't resolve issues such as use of hands, allowing hacking of opponents, etc. Many supporters of these elements (considered more "manly") eventually withdrew and formed the Rugby Football Union, and the FA established rules more similar to the modern game. The next major development was the establishment of a knockout cup in 1871, based on the house competitions at Harrow School. These knockouts, in which most teams names are placed in a hat, and drawn out in pairs, then leading to a one-game knockout competition similar to the NCAA Championships, which culminates in a Cup trophy.

I could remember how we edged out the hard-fighting Morrocan team to our ticket for the global sporting fiesta. The first leg of the final qualification encounter played at the National Stadium, Lagos, ended 3-0 in our favour, while we lost 0-2 in the return leg. It was indeed a sweet revenge against the North African team which had earlier beaten us 2-1 in a very controversial manner in the semi-final of the 1976 Africa Nations Cup finals in Ethiopia.

XXVIII OLYMPICS
August 16 , 2004
The summer Olympics in Athens got underway over the weekend without any major security or facilities delays, but the U.S. team has struggled so far in its traditional strengths of basketball and swimming. Jeffrey Brown gets a progress report on the games from Sports Illustrated writer Brian Cazeneuve in Athens.
JEFFREY BROWN: On the one hand after all the worry over security, drugs and incomplete facilities, the Olympics are underway. And the focus is mostly where it arguably belongs: On the athletics. On the other hand, for Americans at least, the athletic start has been shaky at best. Among the shakiest the U.S. men's basketball team made up of NBA players, was trounced yesterday by Puerto Rico in its first game. It's the first-ever loss for the U.S. with professionals playing. Also yesterday the men's swimming team had its worst showing ever in the 400-meter freestyle relay coming in third behind South Africa and the Netherlands. And today the most publicized of those swimmers, 19-year-old Michael Phelps, lost his much- anticipated showdown with Australian star Ian Thorpe in the 200-meter freestyle. Phelps finished third. For an update from Athens I'm joined by Brian Cazeneuve, Olympics writer for Sports Illustrated now covering his 10th games.

The basic objective of the game is for one team to force the ball by kicking it or propelling it with the chest or head into the opponent's goal. The goal mouth is 24 feet wide and eight feet high, spanned by a crossbar and backed by netting. One point is awarded for each goal scored. The winning team is the one with the highest number of points. The game is played in two 45-minute halves. Only two substitutions are permitted, per side, per game. The 1996 U.S. Olympic Women's Soccer Team captured the hearts of America with their dramatic play en route to the gold medal at the Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga. The team of Michelle Akers, Brandi Chastain, Joy Fawcett, Julie Foudy, Carin Gabarra, Mia Hamm, Mary Harvey, Kristine Lilly, Shannon MacMillan, Carla Overbeck, Cindy Parlow, Tiffany Roberts, Briana Scurry, Tisha Venturini and Staci Wilson escaped sudden death in the semifinals with an overtime win over Norway. Four days later, the U.S. broke a tie to win the gold medal in the inaugural women's Olympic soccer tournament. It was a coming out party for American women's soccer that would culminate three years later (1999) in a wildly successful World Cup victory on American soil.
