Home About Us What We Do Questions ... Contact Us Was this how Soccer was introduced The origins of the great game The World Game. So many cultures played a sport similar to modern soccer that no one can really say with any certainty when or where soccer began but it is known that the earlier varieties of what later became soccer were played almost 3000 years ago. One of the earliest forms of soccer in which players kicked a ball on a small field has been traced as far back as 1004 B.C. in Japan. The Munich Ethnological Museum in Germany has a Chinese text from approximately 50 B.C. that mentions games very similar to soccer that were played between teams from China and Japan. The Chinese kicked a leather ball (filled) with hair) and it is known for sure that a soccer game was played in 611 A.D. in the ancient Japanese capital Kyoto. The Romans played a game that somewhat resembled modern soccer. The early Olympic games in Rome featured twenty-seven men on a side who completed so vigorously that two-thirds of them had to be hospitalized after a fifty-minute game. While historians kept records of events such as wars and religious movements they had very little interest in preserving the various origins of soccer or many other sports, so no one can say how soccer seems to have spread from Asia to Europe.

Vol. 09, No. 02 Dear Reader: The International Olympic Committee's recently-published analysis of the Atlanta Olympic Games television coverage in the U.S. indicates that women made up 52% of the American viewing audience. NBC's cumulative audience in 1996 was a whopping 222.7% higher than its Barcelona 1992 audience. Viewership rose in several categories including increases of 46% for all adults aged 50 or older, 35% for women in the 35+ age group, and 31% for women in the 18+ age group. Viewership among young people grew at a much slower rate. For all viewers in the 12- to 24-year-old group there was only a 2% increase. Different strokes for different folks . . . Gymnastics drew the highest television rating among Olympic viewers in the U.S. The top-rated sport in Spain was tennis. In Brazil it was boxing. Germans favored fencing and judo. Italians liked volleyball best. The Chinese tuned into diving. South Koreans were glued to badminton coverage and South Africans to field hockey. Track and field led the way in Canada, France, Hong Kong, Japan and Great Britain. Add Different Strokes . . . Team handball was virtually invisible during NBC's coverage of the Atlanta Olympic Games. In Norway, though, it was big stuff.

Like most statistics, television ratings can be used in the service of any agenda. It's all a matter of how you frame the jumble of numbers. Having said that, it looks like the Athens Games were a ratings bonanza for NBC , the most-watched non-U.S. Summer Olympics in history, says the Hollywood Reporter. Canadians were not quite so enthusiastic. Ratings were down slightly from the Sydney Olympics in 2000, perhaps a reflection of Canada's disappointing showing in many sports. Athletes and sports officials are calling for more government funding for elite sport, which has touched off a debate about how much the Olympics matter. "Some Ukrainian man in spandex can throw a cannon ball a bit further than any Canadian man in spandex can. And I'm okay with that," writes one man in a letter to the Toronto Globe and Mail Canada's problem in Athens was not under-funding. It was underachievement. "Coming into the Games, Canada had 34 athletes, teams or crews ranked in the top five in the world in 2003," reports the Canadian Press . "Only nine won medals. None of Canada's four world champions even made it to the podium in their event." Try blaming the government for that.

WORLD SOCCER HISTORY World Soccer History Timeline The origin of football can be found in every corner of geography and history. The Italians, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptians, Ancient Greeks, Toltecs, Native American Indians, Persians, Central Americans, Scottish Clans, Vikings and Assyrians played a ball game long before our era. Later, the Roman harpastum, using a bull's bladder, reached the shores of the Atlantic when the legions conquered Gaul. This game led the way to soule, considered together with the Florentine calcio which emerged during the Renaissance, as the real ancestor of football. Football and handball games reach back to the first steps of the human race. Over thousands of years, ancient communities introduced rules to their elementary play of kicking and throwing. Games also embellished religious or tribal festivals. The Chinese played "football" games at least 3000 years ago. It is suspected strongly that the shadowy Celtic nations of Europe and the Vikings had rather nasty football ceremonies. In South and Central America a game called "Tlatchi" once flourished. The Ancient Greeks and the Romans used football games to sharpen warriors for battle. Roman games such as Harpastum or Paganica, which all had elements of kicking or running with the ball, spread Europe-wide with their empire's armies. Traditional football games played throughout Europe in centuries past are still being staged in modern times, especially in the British Isles. They usually include an element of mob battles and chases over countryside and through water. Undertones of ancient Celtic pagan ceremonies as well
