History
C.H. Draft tells the tale: The idea of Truck Soccer evolved out of a general desire to drive remote-control cars around and smash 'em. Guy Worthy had spoken of this desire several times early in 1997, to the point where he was ready to dig up a large portion of his backyard to make a dirt track. Of course, there was more to it than this; basic, common sense enhancements to the cars were discussed. Things like grappling hooks, flame throwers, and the like. There were some interesting cheap remote-control cars that already had cheap, snap-on weirdo stuff, but it all seemed rather wimpy. More importantly, none of these cars had more than two unique frequencies. I don't have to explain that, do I? What it meant, rather simply, was that only two cars could race at the same time. Any more cars, and the frequencies crossed. No good. So we started looking at the more expensive cars. And even more expensive. Then we started looking in the glass cases. And there it was. The big one. The Scorpion II. Six frequencies, one hunnerd dollars. Who's got that kind of money? I don't.

This is Soccer!
There is documentary evidence that a a game or skill building exercise, involving kicking a ball into a small net, was used by the Chinese military during the Han Dynasty - around the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. In England, King Edward III passed laws in 1331 to try and suppress football. In Scotland, King James 1, in 1424, proclaimed in Parliament, "That na man play at the Fute-ball" (No man shall play football/soccer).

The History of Soccer
(for dummies like me)
The history of soccer is an interesting topic – especially since I like soccer AND history! I have separated soccer history into the follow categories:
  • Origins of Soccer Modern Roots of Soccer United States Soccer History History of The World Cup
  • Origins of Soccer
I decided it was silly to write my own version of soccer history. Why rewrite something that has already been done well before? Here are excerpts from various websites describing the history of soccer in ancient and medieval times. From Tetrabrazil.com ”The earliest evidence of soccer dates from about 200 in China, where a form of the game was played that emphasized the ability of players to dribble a leather ball. The Greeks and Romans also participated in a variation of soccer that permitted ball carrying. The modern-day outgrowth of soccer is known to have started in England, and the first ball reportedly was the head of a dead Danish brigand. Although King Edward III prohibited soccer in 1365 because of its excessive violence and for military reasons playing took time away from archery practice the game had become too popular to be curtailed.” From http://worldsoccer.about.com/cs/historyandstats/a/sochist.htm

    Olympic Soccer Medalists
    History
Soccer was supposed to be on the program for the first modern Olympics in 1896, but it was cancelled because no teams entered, although some players showed up. The sport officially entered the Olympics in 1900 and it's been on the program ever since. The Olympic stand against professionalism led directly to the creation of soccer's World Cup tournament. After several countries withdrew from the 1928 Olympic tournament because their professionals weren't allowed to play, the Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) decided to hold its own quadrennial world championship, beginning in 1929. In 1984, the International Olympic Committee decided to allow professionals to compete, but only if they hadn't taken part in World Cup play, which still left out most of the world's best players. The rule was amended in 1992 to allow professional players under 23 years of age in the Olympics. Since 1996, each team has been allowed to have three professional players over 22. Women's soccer was added to the Olympic program in 1996.

A History of Soccer in Oregon
    by David M. Porter
History is a nightmare from which I am trying to awake,” said James Joyce. While we all remember matches that evoked of sentiment, generally soccer players are more fond than not of recalling and recounting the past. Do you remember your first match? Your first goal? The first time someone whacked your shin with their boot?
The storytelling, good memories, and shared experiences become part of the lore of the sport and part of what gets passed on to new players and youngsters. Would baseball be as exciting to its fans without Ruth and Mantle? Would basketball have grown without Chamberlain or Jordan?
The growth of soccer, locally and nationally, is probably tied to its traditions. Some traditions survive through the telling of stories by people who remember the “good old days” and are willing to talk about them. Others are lost until someone goes back and looks up what happens so that the history becomes part of everyone's knowledge.
This is a beginning, much incomplete attempt to bring the threads of soccer’s tradition in our part of the world together into a single fabric, perhaps a fan's scarf, to be worn and cherished as a symbol of “the game”.

    A short history of football
Sketch of an early university match The International Football Association Board (IFAB) may possess a proud reputation as having preserved the foundations of the game as it enters a third century, but there are still a few things about the way football was once played that might raise a few eyebrows... 1. During the very first international football match between Scotland and England in 1872, players not only wore “knickerbockers” or long pants but bobble hats or caps too. The head dresses were a normal part of the footballing attire at the time and lasted well into the 20th century. 2. Balls were not exactly round when the first club and country matches took place. A pig’s bladder was blown up like a balloon, tied at the ends and placed inside a leather case, affording it an egg shape. The discovery of Indian rubber in the 1860s gave the ball greater roundness. 3. While it is true footballs of yesteryear gained weight in wet conditions, they were in fact lighter than today’s ball. In 1889, the spherical object used had to be between 12-15 ounces (340 – 425 grams) but this increased to 14-16 ounces (397 -454 grams) in 1937.

Spanish National Side History Recent History 1998 World Cup - Quarter finals Spain carried on their impressive form in the period leading up to the 1998 World Cup in France, winning eight and drawing the other two of their qualifying games, and only losing one friendly out of four, to France. Results of qualifying matches were as follows: Faeroe Islands : W 3-1 (Luis Enrique 2, Oli); W 2-6 (Alfonso 3, Luis Enrique, Hierro, Johanssen og)
    Czech Republic : W 1-0 (Hierro pen); D 0-0
Slovakia : W 4-1 (Pizzi, Amor, Luis Enrique, Hierro); W 1-2 (Kiko, Amor)
    Yugoslavia
    Malta
: W 4-0 (Alfonso 2, Guardiola, Pizzi) ; W 0-3 (Guerrero 3) Clemente had been playing a team packed with defenders, with some of these, including Nadal, Sergi, Luis Enrique (then playing full back for Real Madrid) and Hierro, playing in midfield. Nevertheless they had been scoring goals, and with a good performance also in the last world cup, were rated amongst the favourites for this one. The disappointment against the African side was compounded by a poor goal-less draw against Paraguay, with Chilavert on unbeatable form, and Spain had one foot out of the competition. In the last match they rallied to beat Bulgaria 6-1, with goals from Morientes (2), Kiko (2), Hierro and Luis Enrique, but it was all academic as Paraguay beat Nigeria 3-1, and Spain were out.
