The World's Most Beloved Sport - The History of Soccer
by: Rebecca Blain While it is undisputed that the origins of modern soccer, or football, originated in Britain, there is a great deal of evidence that points to this beloved game as having an older history. Where did the game of soccer really begin, and how old is it? To understand how many different varieties of "soccer" there are, you need to understand a bit about the older versions of the game and how they have evolved. Below, you will find a list of the predominant cultures that had a variety of soccer, and learn how each one differs from what we play today. And no, they never used anything like Lotto shinguards back then either!

Chinese Soccer History To many, this is the oldest version of soccer to exist. However, there is quite a lot of controversy of whether or not this is the oldest, or Japan's version is the elder. The Chinese version of the game, originally named "Tsu Chu", involved players on a field that had to hit a leather ball stuffed with fur into a small hole. Like Soccer, no hands were permitted during the play of the game, and it was considered an honor to be a member of a team. The Emperor of the Han Dynasty, when the game was developed, was an avid player and fan, and spread the popularity of this game all over China during his reign. This roughly dates back to 300 B.C., although there is controversy on the subject of dating, which could result in the origins of the game being as far back as 5000 B.C. Regardless, this version of Soccer is extremely old. Despite that, there is still a version of Tsu Chu played today. While the two games are similar, Tsu Chu has had no effect on the modern version of the game, as it was originally developed and created for play in Great Britain.

Because of this desire to compete against the best players and teams possible, in the year 2001, Brigham Young University participated in its first international tour. The team traveled for 10 days throughout Europe, playing 6 games in Spain and Holland. They compiled a 4-1-1 record, playing games in Spain against Vallecas, Rayo Vallecano reserves, and FC Barcelona reserves, and playing games in Holland against FC Sittard and Minor Nuth. In 2002, they spent 6 days in Pachuca and Mexico City playing 4 games against the various reserve teams of Pachuca and Cruz Azul, compiling a 2-2 record. This is the future of Brigham Young University Soccer, traveling internationally while playing the best competition available.
Paralleling their efforts to increase the level of competition , Brigham Young University Soccer has left the Collegiate Club division of soccer, and have purchased a Premier Development League franchise, where they will begin play in May of 2003. Part of the United Soccer Leagues, this league provides the year round competition necessary to develop individual and team skills that in hand will better prepare them for success in their international travels. We are the only University sponsored soccer program to ever purchase a franchise and that will compete at a level considered higher than NCAA soccer in the pyramid of US soccer development.

This is only the second year that the Tigers are competing not only in the NCCAA, but also in the NAIA. The addition of the NAIA games have given the Tigers the opportunity to take their game to the next level. At the end of this season they have placed third in the region, and fourth in their conference.
Currently, the Tigers are taking a well deserved rest as they get ready for the 2005-2006 season.

    HISTORY
The Women's Soccer Club of The Ohio State University has for over 31 years provided women the opportunity to play intercollegiate soccer against other university clubs and varsities. Our tradition is one of success in consistently winning soccer matches while sustaining a strong commitment to both the sport and club organization. The Women's Soccer Club founded the Ohio River Soccer Conference in 1993, which is now comprised of Bowling Green University, University of Dayton, Kent State, Miami University, Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Ohio University, The Ohio State University, Xavier and The Pennsylvania State University. The conference championship is hosted each November in Columbus with the champion sent to the NIRSA Club Soccer National Championship, in Austin, Texas. The club plays three seasons, including approximately 20 conference and non-conference matches in the Fall, 2 Winter indoor tournaments plus scrimmages, and a Spring season of 10 tournaments and individual matches. The 2004 season schedule is being finalized and the team will also travel to Chicago, the Purdue for a Cross Conference Tournament and will attempt to earn a birth at the National Tournament which will be held in Texas. Once again the team gathered for practice before school starts in September 2004, and leave for the fall trip in September. This year white water rafting and a high ropes course will be added to spice up the pre season. The team is fund raising for the trip to Texas and the NIRSA tournament, having decided to put in an application for selection to either the National Championship or Open brackets.
