The colourful history of the fascinating game of Soccer:

By Dr. Wilfried Gerhardt
This article was first published in April 1979 in FIFA News. The author was the former press officer for the German Football Association. Selected paragraphs have been updated in the interim.
The contemporary history of football spans almost 150 years. It all began in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football branched off on their different courses and the world's first football association was founded - The Football Association in England. Both forms of football stemmed from a common root and both have a long and intricately branched ancestral tree. Their early history reveals at least half a dozen different games, varying to different degrees and to which the historical development of football is related and has actually been traced back. Whether this can be justified in some instances is disputable. Nevertheless, the fact remains that playing a ball with the feet has been going on for thousands of years and there is absolutely no reason to believe that it is an aberration of the more "natural" form of playing a ball with the hands. Another form of the game, also originating from the Far East, was the Japanese Kemari, which dates from about 500 to 600 years later and is still played today. This is a type of circular football game, far less spectacular, but, for that reason, a 'more dignified and ceremonious experience, requiring certain skills, but not competitive ' in the way the Chinese game was, nor is there the slightest sign of struggle for possession of the ball. The players had to pass the ball to each other, in a relatively small space, trying not to let it touch the ground.

The first man entrusted with the nurturance and guidance of the fledgling program was Charlie Duccilli, a man whose name was synonymous with the game of soccer in southern New Jersey. The leading scorer in Philadelphia and Temple University history, Duccilli played professionally in the ASL and NASL for eight years. His exploits led him to be inducted into the Temple Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. The 1985 team showed even more promise, compiling a 13-4-1 mark and qualifying for the ECAC Tournament, its first-ever postseason berth. After a 9-6-2 record in 1986, the Knights soared to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth in 1987, when they went 12-6. Despite losing 1-0 to Connecticut in the first round, the squad had made the transition from baby steps to adult strides.

Through its first eight seasons of intercollegiate play, the South Alabama Jaguar women's soccer program has distinguished itself as one of the more consistent clubs in the South. Today, USA continues to add to its tradition as it concentrates on conference championships and turns its focus to NCAA Tournaments. After playing as an independent for four of its first six years, South Alabama found a new home in 2000, one that was familiar to the Jaguar family, as the Sun Belt Conference began sponsoring women's soccer as a championship sport. And it looks to emerge to greater heights with an automatic bid to the NCAAs awaiting its tournament winner. The nine-team league includes Arkansas-Little Rock, Arkansas State, Florida International, Denver, Louisiana-Lafayette, North Texas, Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky. Florida International won the inaugural championship by defeating North Texas, and Denver toppled North Texas to claim the second annual award. The tournament championships return to Mobile this fall.

History Soccer has been passed down from generation to generation. The ancient Greeks had a game called Harpasturm. By any meanings, a ball was moved over lines located at opposite ends of the field. Soccer is attributed to such widely separated places as Ireland,Greece,England and Rome . Soccer was first known in Britain as Association Football. This was shortened to A-SOC and finally to soccer . It was likely that the game developed in several locations. A crudely shaped ball was either hit with the hands or kicked . It was later known as feetball, a rough and rugged kicking game played as a mob sport . Many English monarchs, like Edward II, Elizabeth I,and James I didn't allow their subjects to play the bloody sport because of the complaints of damaged property . It somehow survived through the centuries . J.C. Thring, an English man from the upper class, drew up the rules and gave the game respectability . The modern version of the game began in England . The game also came to America during colonial time . There was a match for men between Princeton and Rutgers as early as 1869 . Soccer did not gain popularity until after World War I. The game for women was started at the Bryn Mawr College in 1919. The first official women's rules were written in 1927. Soccer is a national sport of 53 countries. go to word go to maze go back to home page

An Overview of American Soccer History
By Dave Litterer The American Soccer History Archives This page is a detailed historical overview of United States soccer from its roots in the 19th century to the present day.
Origins, 1609-1862
The first football clubs were established in Sheffield in 1857, and soon they had enough to establish their own Football Association in 1867. Sheffield FA played London FA in 1861, one of the first regional matches. And eventually the need for a unified set of rules became obvious. This, prompted by many letters to the editors of the newspapers in the midlands, the near north, and London regions of England, and led to a series of meetings, which culminated in the formation of the Football Association (FA) in 1863. This group attempted to establish a series of rules, which would please everyone, but they couldn't resolve issues such as use of hands, allowing hacking of opponents, etc. Many supporters of these elements (considered more "manly") eventually withdrew and formed the Rugby Football Union, and the FA established rules more similar to the modern game. The next major development was the establishment of a knockout cup in 1871, based on the house competitions at Harrow School. These knockouts, in which most teams names are placed in a hat, and drawn out in pairs, then leading to a one-game knockout competition similar to the NCAA Championships, which culminates in a Cup trophy.
