Background of the Sport
This sport is a Canadian invention, having been jump-started by Bombardier's invention of the Ski-Doo snowmobile. It became a major recreational sport in the mid-sixties, and has become a great family winter sport. Today's snowmobiles are quieter, more stable, and more reliable than the early snowmobiles, and some models are downright luxurious, with foot and snack warmers aboard.
To drive a snowmobile, remember that you throttle (accelerate) with your right hand and brake with your left. You straddle the seat cushions, and rest your feet on the running boards, letting your legs absorb the bounces on the bumps. Today's snowmobiles can go as fast as 100 km/h, though you do not want to go at speeds beyond 50 km/h if you wish to see the natural terrain around you.
Equipment
To go snowmobiling you need a snowmobile, and a truck or trailer to carry it. You do not need a licence to drive a snowmobile, but the vehicle must be registered with the provincial Motor Vehicle Branch. Snowmobiles can cost from $4000 to $15000, with trailers starting at $400. Fortunately in good snowmobiling areas, you can rent them by the hour or by the day. You should also wear warm winter clothing, like a one or two-piece snowmobile (or ski) suit, goggles and helmet.

Home What's New? Events Inside the Club Join BMSD ... TUCKER FUNDRAISING Club History: The Blue Mountain Snowdusters club was founded in 1974 by a group of snowmobile enthusiasts in the local community who wanted to promote the enjoyment of the outdoor trail system. Unlike other clubs in the state, this club was not dedicated solely to snowmobiling - it included cross-country skiers as well. The founding members had a keen interest in conserving the recreational trails, promoting well being in the community, and giving to those in need. In support of these ideals, the Blue Mountain Snowdusters were the founders of the Grantham “Old Home Day” and we have made annual donations to Easter Seals for more than 25 years. (Another beautiful day on the trails.) We're moving to expand our community involvement by inviting anyone interested in preserving, working on, and supporting our trail system to join the Blue Mountain Snowdusters Outdoor Recreation Club. Some of the many uses for our trails include hiking, mountain biking, snow shoeing, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. Through our similar interests and individual contributions we can be assured that future generations will also enjoy our beautiful outdoor trail system. It is critically important that every trail system user acknowledge the generosity and respect the rights of every landowner that has shared access to their property with us. If *any* trail system is to survive, we must all take an active part in protecting and preserving each part of the trail system. You can do your part by: staying out of environmentally sensitive or unauthorized or posted areas, staying on the established trails at all times, practicing a carry in-carry out policy, and reporting any suspicious and/or abusive behavior that you see on the trail system. We should all strive to leave the trails in better shape than we found them. Every small contribution that you make helps strengthen our relationship with landowners and the general public while every bit of abuse by ANY user of the trail system hurts us and threatens our recreational opportunities.

This is the Last Snowmobile Trails Conditions Report for the Season! Riding the trails without adequate snow cover will damage the land, so please be respectful of the landowners' rights to close the trails. Remember, you are a guest on their property! Spring Conditions Close Southern New Hampshire Snowmobile Trails The Division of Parks and Recreation, Bureau of Trails announces that the snowmobile trails in southern NH state parks and forests and the recreational rail trails are currently closed due to the diminishing snow cover and wet ground conditions. The Gates on the southern NH rail trails and in the southern parks south of the White Mountains are being closed, so please use extreme caution on these trails and watch for closed gates. Other state-managed trails in the northern areas of the state will be closing soon as conditions require. The gates on those northern state-managed lands will also be closed once those trails are closed for the winter snowmobile season. The Bureau asks that all users, including mountain bikers, equestrians, and hikers stay off all trails during this spring season. The wet spring mud season makes the trails extremely soft and increases the likelihood of potential hazardous trail conditions and damage to the land. ATV users are reminded that snowmobile trails designated for winter use only are closed to motorized use unless there is consistent snow cover.

The Children's Safety Network Rural Injury Prevention Resource Center does not endorse a specific program or curriculum, but offers these as examples. You may contact the representatives of each organization for information to initiate or str ngthen a youth snowmobile safety program in your community. Evaluations of the impact of youth snowmobile safety education are limited. At this time, it would be premature to draw conclusions regarding the value of programs toward the reduction of injury.
