http://www.ou.edu/oupd/peril.htm
Perilous partners are everywhere. Many plants and animals in and around the home and garden are potentially toxic. It is important to be aware of these perilous partners so they may be kept far from the reach of children and pets.
Children are often attracted to the colorful fruits, blossoms, berries or leaves of plants, but must be taught to keep all plants out of their moths. Some of the most common house and garden plants have been found to possess the most toxic qualities.
Other perilous partners are encountered in yards, fields and woody areas. Contact with them should be avoided if possible. It is essential that children and adults understand the dangers involved in these perilous partners.
This web page is designed to acquaint you with some of the more common perilous snake and insect partners in Oklahoma. It's not intended to be all-inclusive. Contact the Oklahoma Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222 for additional information. [Use or (405) 271-1122 for TTY/TDD] See our Plant Smarts page for information on "plant" hazards around the home.
While many life-long Oklahoma adult residents may be familiar with all the perilous partners discussed here, it should be a good reference for parents to use in teaching and discussing such hazards with their children, as well as for international students and OU students hailing from other U.S. states who might not be familiar with the "local wildlife". Some of the species discussed here are common throughout the Southwest U.S. and in some cases nationwide or internationally.

First published in 1987, Snakes: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology became an indispensable reference book on herpetology.
I thought
you would be interested to know that it is now available again, reprinted with a new foreword by the editors, from The
Blackburn Press.
Its extensive review of the biology of snakes includes topics such as zoogeography, fossil history, systematics, social
behavior, foraging, and reproduction. With contributions from numerous leading herpetologists, the work is divided into sections on Systematics and Morphology, Collecting and Captive Maintenance, and Life History and Ecology.

The sea snake's body is flattened laterally and its oarlike tail is used as a scull. A specialized lung and nostrils with valves enable it to remain submerged for periods of up to 8 hr. Most species are dark above and lighter below, or ringed with black and grayish green. They feed on small fish and are preyed upon by sea birds, sharks, and larger fish. Their potent venom quickly immobilizes their prey; however, they are not aggressive and rarely strike at humans when caught. Most sea snakes are completely marine and lack the enlarged ventral scales that enable land snakes to grip the ground. These snakes bear live young at sea. Most inhabit the shallow waters of the Indonesian region, but the common sea snake

http://www.usyd.edu.au/anaes/venom/snakebite.html
Snake Bites In Australia there are about 3,000 snake bites per year, of which 200 to 500 receive antivenom; on average one or two will prove fatal. About half the deaths are due to bites from the brown snake; the rest mostly from tiger snake, taipan and death adder. Some deaths are sudden, however in fact it is uncommon to die within four hours of a snake bite. Struan Sutherland's 'Death from snake bite in Australia, 1981-1991' (The Medical Journal of Australia, December 1991, Volume 7, pages 740-46) contains some graphic descriptions of the 18 known fatal snake bites in that ten year period. In 1906, the untreated death rates were as high as 40% to 50% for death adder and tiger snake bites! Improved supportive treatment and the availability of effective antivenoms has reduced this considerably. Contents: For more information go to the Australian Venom Research Unit site or the Australian Reptile Park Snake Identification Before the advent of polyvalent antivenoms it was extremely important to positively identify the snake. Although less important now, it remains highly desirable, because snake-specific antivenoms are less hazardous to the patient than polyvalent antivenoms. Snake identification can be very difficult if it was seen fleetingly or in poor light. Scale patterns and colours can be quite unreliable, especially for brown snakes.

Venomous Snakes Family Viperidae Venomomous snakes of the Family Viperidae are known as the "pit vipers" because they have a heat-sensing "pit" between their eye and nostril. The fangs of these species fold up against the roof of their mouth. Information on the species of viperids common to Georgia and South Carolina is presented below.
Copperhead Agkistrodon contortrix Uncommon to common. Copperheads are found in wet wooded areas, high areas in swamps, and mountainous habitats, although they may be encountered occasionally in most terrestrial habitats. Adults usually are 2 to 3 ft. long. Their general appearance is light brown or pinkish with darker, saddle-shaped crossbands. The head is solid brown. Their leaf-pattern camouflage permits copperheads to be sit-and-wait predators, concealed not only from their prey but also from their enemies. Copperheads feed on mice, small birds, lizards, snakes, amphibians, and insects, especially cicadas. Like young cottonmouths, baby copperheads have a bright yellow tail that is used to lure small prey animals. Canebrake or Timber Rattlesnake Crotalus horridus Common. This species occupies a wide diversity of terrestrial habitats, but is found most frequently in deciduous forests and high ground in swamps. Heavy-bodied adults are usually 3 to 4, and occasionally 5, ft. long. Their basic color is gray with black crossbands that usually are chevron-shaped. Timber rattlesnakes feed on various rodents, rabbits, and occasionally birds. These rattlesnakes are generally passive if not disturbed or pestered in some way. When a rattlesnake is encountered, the safest reaction is to back awayit will not try to attack you if you leave it alone.
