SNACKS FOR PRESCHOOLERS Karen M. Chapman Nutrition Specialist Human Development and Family Studies University of Illinois Cooperative Extension Snacking has a bad reputation in today's society. The importance of eating regular meals has been stressed so much that frequent snacking may be seen as a bad thing. However, meals and snacks for preschoolers should be viewed differently. Preschoolers, of course, are smaller than adults. Their stomachs just cannot hold as much food at one time as an adult's can. For this reason, they need to eat more often than we do. Also, when children are active, they require more calories. Preschoolers aren't growing as rapidly as when they were infants, but they still need about 1,300 calories per day. If their activity level is moderate to high, they should probably take in even more calories. Snacks provide an estimated 20 to 25 percent of a preschooler's total energy intake. Consider, too, that a preschooler's typical day is very different from an adult's. The preschooler's day has many more social "events" than an adult's day. Activities that revolve around food are a very important way to learn social skills. Providing frequent opportunities for preschoolers to eat with other children and adults meets their nutritional needs, and it provides opportunity for socialization. So, snacking is fine - even good - for preschoolers, but all snacks are not equal! Because snacks provide almost one-fourth of a child's food intake, they should be nutritious. Nutritious snacks will help children to get all the vitamins and minerals they need each day. To make wise choices, use the food pyramid when you are planning snacks and meals. This useful tool will help you provide the children with the correct number of servings from the dairy, fruit, vegetable, and grain groups.

Fradgley Extension Assistant Iowa State University Extension Snacking has become a way of life for both adults and children. Nearly all children eat at least one snack per day, with many children eating two or three. In a 1993 study, on a typical school day, 40% of the children surveyed did not eat any vegetables; 20% did not eat any fruit; and 36% ate four different types of snack food. The snacks most commonly eaten by all the students were cookies (38%), ice cream (33%), soda (31%), chips (26%), and candy (18%). In a recent conference concerning children and nutrition, reports showed the preferred snacks are salty/crunchy and ice cream. Although fine when served occasionally, many of these foods have high amounts of fat, sugar, and sodium. Choosing them repeatedly as snacks or including them frequently in meals can lead to poor nutritional balance. SWEET SNACKS The young child's preference for sweets is related to what parents do or do not allow, according to a Cornell University study of the habits of 122 children aged 36 to 64 months. Children whose parents ate sweets frequently were likely to eat sweets more often than those whose parents seldom ate sweets. Sweet eating was also related to the amount of television watched by the child as well as to the parents' attitude toward giving the child sweets.

We could learn a lot from our international neighbors. Many cultures around the globe have evolved to use insects in their diets. There was probably some trial and error involved because not all insects are edible. In fact, some insects are poisonous. But there are lots of insects that are safely eaten by people around the world. Eating Insects in the Past... Algeria - The natives of Algeria would collect large numbers of desert locusts to use as food. They were a valuable resource for the poor population. The locusts were cooked in salt water and dried in the sun. Not only were they collected for personal use, but the locusts were traded in the markets as well. Australia - Australian natives, known as Aborigines, have eaten many different insects throughout history. Hundreds of Aborigines would come together at the Bogong mountains to feast on Bogong moths. These moths would gather in large numbers on the cave floors and in rock crevices. They were harvested, cooked in sand and stirred in hot ashes. This would burn off the wings and legs. The moths were then sifted through a net to remove their heads before they were eaten by the Aborigines. Some of the moths were ground into paste and made into cakes.
