Smoking adversely affects your health. If you smoke, quitting is the one best thing you can do for your health. Tobacco smoke contains tar, which is made up of over 4,000 chemicals, including the 43 known to cause cancer. Some of these substances cause heart and respiratory diseases, all of which are disabling and can cause death. You might be surprised to know some of the chemicals and gases found in tobacco smoke. They include:
* cyanide, benzene, formaldehyde, methanol, acetylene (the fuel used in torches) , and ammonia,
* nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide, both poisonous gases, and
* nicotine, an addictive drug. Cigarette, cigar and pipe smoking increase our risk of cancer. Tobacco use accounts for 30 percent, or one in three, of all cancer deaths in the United States. Smoking is responsible for almost 90 percent of lung cancers among men and more than 70 percent among women. Smoking is a major risk factor for cancer of the mouth, larynx, esophagus, kidney, bladder, pancreas, and uterine cervix. Tobacco smoking causes several lung diseases that can be just as dangerous as lung cancer. Chronic bronchitis is a common ailment for smokers. Smoking is also the major cause of emphysema. This disease slowly destroys a person's ability to breathe. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) , which includes chronic bronchitis and emphysema, kills about 81,000 people each year. Smoking is responsible for more than 65,000 of these deaths.

What you can do:
Quit or cut back as much as you can. We know it’s hard, but remember, you’re doing this for your baby. Here are some resources that can help: Pregnant women who don't smoke should avoid other people's smoke. Studies suggest that regular exposure to secondhand smoke may harm the baby. Smoking: Tips to Quit

How can I talk to my children about the dangers of smoking?
Is smoking a major cause of lung cancer in women?
Many people think that lung cancer affects mostly men. But even though we hear more about breast cancer, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in women. And nearly all lung cancer deaths in women are due to smoking. Quitting smoking now is one important change you can make to improve your lung and overall health and live longer. Former smokers have a lower risk for lung cancer than do current smokers. In one to nine months after quitting smoking, your lungs will function better. And after 10 years, your risk of lung cancer is nearly the same as someone who never smoked.
Should women who smoke be concerned about heart disease?
Yes. More women die each year from heart disease than from any other illness. Smoking is the major cause of heart disease in women, especially those younger than age 50. Women who use birth control pills have a much higher risk of heart disease if they smoke. But after just one year of quitting smoking, you reduce your risk of heart disease by half.

Teens Tobacco
When your parents were young, people could buy cigarettes and smoke pretty much anywhere - even in hospitals! Ads for cigarettes were all over the place. Today we're more aware about how bad smoking is for our health. Smoking is restricted or banned in almost all public places and cigarette companies are no longer allowed to advertise on buses or trains, billboards, TV, and in many magazines. Almost everyone knows that smoking causes cancer, emphysema, and heart disease; that it can shorten your life by 14 years or more; and that the habit can cost a smoker thousands of dollars a year. So how come people are still lighting up? The answer, in a word, is addiction Once You Start, It's Hard to Stop
Smoking's a hard habit to break because tobacco contains nicotine, which is highly addictive. Like heroin or other addictive drugs, the body and mind quickly become so used to the nicotine in cigarettes that a person needs to have it just to feel normal. Almost no smoker begins as an adult. Statistics show that about nine out of 10 tobacco users start before they're 18 years old. Some teens who smoke say they start because they think it helps them look older (it does - if yellow teeth and wrinkles are the look you want). Others smoke because they think it helps them relax (it doesn't - the heart actually beats faster while a person's smoking). Some light up as a way to feel rebellious or to set themselves apart (which works if you want your friends to hang out someplace else while you're puffing away). Some start because their friends smoke - or just because it gives them something to do.

Physicians and scientists around the world even go as far as to state that smoking leads to premature death. But does it really? Don’t we all know someone who smokes constantly, even heavily, yet is still living — or has lived — to the mature age of eighty, ninety, and older?
If you know of a smoker who is now deceased, isn’t it possible that they passed-on from basic old age and not from the act of smoking cigarettes?
Furthermore, the MDs and PhDs state that smoking causes cancer and emphysema. If this diagnosis were definitive, wouldn’t these afflictions affect all smokers equally, rather than the small percentage that it actually does affect?
Consider, alternately, that these physicians and scientists are correct to any degree. Wouldn’t it make sense to take precautionary measures to decrease your risks of diminished health? Certainly.

Quit Smoking For Your Health Nicotine Is A Powerful Addiction
If you have tried to quit smoking, you know how hard it can be. Quitting is hard because nicotine is a very addictive drug. For some people, nicotine can be as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Some people try two or three times or more, before finally being able to quit. Each time you try to quit, you can learn about what helps and what hurts. Quitting takes hard work and a lot of effort, but you can quit smoking. Good Reasons for Quitting
Quitting smoking is one of the most important things you will ever do:
  • You will live longer and live better. Quitting will lower your chance of having a heart attack, stroke, or cancer. If you are pregnant, quitting smoking will improve your chances of having a healthy baby. The people with whom you live, especially your children, will be healthier. You will have extra money to spend on things other than cigarettes.
People who quit smoking are proud of themselves for breaking the addiction. By quitting, smokers get many health benefits. They cut down on their risk of having lung disease, a heart attack or getting cancer. Former smokers have an improved sense of smell and get rid of cigarette stains on their hands, hacking coughs and the smell of stale cigarette smoke on their clothing and in their homes. Five Steps to Successful Quitting
Studies have shown that these five steps will help you quit and quit for good. You have the best chances of quitting if you use them together:

"Smoking cessation represents the single most important step that smokers can take to enhance the length and quality of their lives." Not smoking is one of the best things you can do for yourself. Compared to smokers, nonsmokers and ex-smokers enjoy better health and have significantly lower risks of heart and lung diseases and cancer. Nonsmokers also live longer. In a large population study of 550,000 Americans age 35 to 69, smokers had a much higher risk of dying from any cause than nonsmokers. The chart below illustrates how smoking increases the overall risk of death.

Don't smoke or use tobacco.
Using tobacco is one of the most dangerous things you can do. One out of every 6 deaths in the United States can be blamed on smoking. More preventable illnesses are caused by tobacco than by anything else. Return to top
Limit how much alcohol you drink.
This means no more than 2 drinks a day for men, and 1 drink a day for women. One drink is a can of beer (12 ounces), a 4-ounce glass of wine or a jigger (1 ounce) of liquor. Too much alcohol can damage the liver and contribute to some cancers, such as throat and liver cancer. Alcohol also contributes to deaths from car wrecks, murders and suicides. Return to top

How will my health improve by becoming a non-smoker?
Quitting smoking helps your circulation, your stamina, your skin, and your general health. Your risk for coronary heart disease, the most common cause of death in the U.S., is cut in half after only a year without smoking. Quitting smoking also reduces the likelihood of having breathing problems and lung and other cancers. Studies have shown that smoking affects others as well as yourself. Children of parents who smoke around the house are more likely to get respiratory infections than children from nonsmoking homes. Smoking is an addictive habit. Quitting smoking isn't easy but it can be done. Most former smokers make several attempts to quit before they are finally successful. So, never say, "I can't." Just keep trying!
