Tobacco, smoking and cancer Smoking is the biggest single cause of cancer in the world. In the UK tobacco:
  • causes over one in four cancer deaths causes nine out of ten cases of lung cancer.
Smoking increases your risk of cancer of the bladder, cervix, kidney, larynx (voice box), mouth, oesophagus (foodpipe), pancreas, stomach and some types of leukaemia. Smokeless or chewing tobacco can cause mouth cancer. Half of all smokers die from smoking related diseases. For more details on the links between smoking and cancer, go to our How do we know? section.
Tobacco and other diseases
Smoking also causes heart disease, stroke and chronic lung diseases such as bronchitis and emphysema. Smokers are two to three times more likely to have a heart attack than non-smokers. And for women, smoking whilst taking the Pill greatly increases your risk of having a heart attack.
Smoking in the UK
Over a quarter of UK adults smoke cigarettes. Smoking is highest amongst those aged 20-34 and in lower income groups. The worrying reality is that almost as many young people are starting to smoke as there are older people giving up. Breathing in other people's smoke also causes 700 premature deaths a year in the UK.

Diabetes and smoking: a risky combination!
  • People with diabetes are three times as likely to die of cardiovascular diseases. Smoking and diabetes together make you 11 times more likely to die of a heart attack or stroke.
  • Smoking raises your blood sugar levels AND cuts your body's ability to use insulin, making it hard to control your diabetes. Smoking ONE cigarette reduces the body's ability to use insulin by 15%.
  • Smoking increases your cholesterol levels and the levels of other fats in your blood. This increases your risk of having a heart attack.
  • Smoking cuts the amount of oxygen reaching tissues. This can lead to a heart attack or stroke. Pregnant women who smoke are more likely to have a miscarriage or stillbirth.

What cigarettes do to your health
Smoking is a risk factor for many health problems, some of which are life-threatening. In fact, according to figures from Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) http://www.ash.org.uk, 120,000 people in the UK die each year as a result of smoking. Put into perspective, this means that smoking kills around six times more people in the UK than road traffic accidents, other accidents, poisoning and overdose, murder and manslaughter, suicide and HIV infection, all put together.
Key Points
  • Smoking accounts for 120,000 deaths each year.

Some of the Effects of Smoking on your Health
The following is an overview of some of the effects that smoking cigarettes can have on your health: · A recent study estimated that non-smokers are at a 26% greater risk of lung cancer if they are married to a smoker. · Exposure to second hand tobacco smoke contributes to the incidence of childhood asthma. · Research has shown that children with cystic fibrosis who are exposed to tobacco smoke in the home are smaller and lighter than those not exposed, suggesting a possible link between passive smoking and growth and appetite. · Smoking may contribute to cancer of the cervix. American research has shown that nicotine is present in the cervical fluid of non-smokers following exposure to passive smoking, although active smokers, who draw smoke directly into their lungs, have higher levels still. · Smoking accounts for about 80-90% of all chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema, chronic mucus secretion, chronic air flow blocks) · Smoking is involved in 85% of all lung cancer deaths!(which is incurable) An individual with chronic bronchitis (which is caused by smoking) is more likely to get a bacterial infection if he/she is a smoker. A smoker gets more nose and throat inflammations, respiratory infections, and chronic bronchitis.

WEB EXCLUSIVE Newsweek July 19 - A new study has given hope to researchers that brain damage caused by Alzheimer's disease may not only be slowed down, but reversed. In their study, published in the journal Science, University of Minnesota neurology professor Karen Ashe and her colleagues bred mice with a human gene linked to dementia. When they activated the gene, the mice revealed signs of dementia through a decreased ability to swim through a water maze. But when the researchers de-activated the gene, not only did the signs of dementia decline, but the mental functions of the mice were actually restored. The researchers found that by blocking the production of tau-a mutant protein that's been linked to Alzheimer'ssome of the affected neurons were able to recover. Researchers have been unable to pinpoint the cause of Alzheimer's, a creeping brain degeneration that affects about 4.5 million Americans. Could the findings affect how the disease is treated?

Could passive smoking damage your health?
The news that the risks of passive smoking may not be as great as previously believed was reported by nine newspapers on 16 May 2003 (1-9). Although the reports were generally accurate, the research came from a single study which should be interpreted in the context of the existing scientific literature.
  • The news that the risks of passive smoking may not be as high as previously believed was reported by nine newspapers on 16 May 2003 (1-9). Most of the newspapers commented that exposure to tobacco smoke from a spouse was not significantly associated with an increased risk of dying from coronary heart disease or lung cancer.
  • The research study (10) found no significant associations between current or former exposure to tobacco smoke from a spouse and mortality from heart disease or lung cancer. The researchers claimed that the association between exposure to environmental tobacco smoke and coronary heart disease and lung cancer may be considerably weaker than generally believed. However active cigarette smoking was found to be strongly, positively associated with death from coronary heart disease, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Most of the newspapers were broadly accurate in their reporting of this study. However only the

No. Although some people try to make their smoking habit safer by smoking fewer cigarettes, most smokers find that hard to do. Some people think that switching from high-tar and high-nicotine cigarettes to those with low tar and nicotine makes smoking safer, but this is not true. When people switch to brands with lower tar and nicotine, they often end up smoking more cigarettes, or more of each cigarette, to get the same nicotine dose as before. A low-tar cigarette can be just as harmful as a high-tar cigarette when a person takes deeper puffs, puffs more frequently, or smokes them to a shorter butt length. Even if smokers who switch to lower-tar brands do not make these changes to compensate, the health benefits are very small when compared to the benefits of quitting for good. Is cigarette smoking really addictive?
