http://www.jdl.co.uk/training/two_siders/H-OwST_2s.html
Introduction For many years the Smalltalk programming language had near-universal acknowledgement as the best language for teaching, practising and prototyping object-oriented designs and implementations even when it is unlikely to be the eventual implementation language. This course uses Smalltalk to provide a practical introduction to object-oriented programming and the principles of object-oriented design. Smalltalk has also become a serious and credible application development environment, and this course can also act as an introduction for Smalltalk programmers.
Duration and Construction
The course lasts three days. It is based on a cycle of theory-language-practice-review, with approximately two cycles per day. One non-trivial, practical case-study is developed during the course. Each day will start at 09.00 and finish at 16.30.
Intended Audience
Participants will be practising software engineers who already know and use a high-level programming languagepreferably a modern, block structured language. They will be wanting to understand and practice the correct use of object technology and might even be considering Smalltalk as their implementation technology. The course can be used as an introductory course and be followed by an object-oriented analysis and design course. It can also be taken after an analysis and design course as a way of solidifying and strengthening theoretical knowledge.
Aims
  • To experience all the major insights that are necessary in order to obtain the maximum benefit from object technology

Advanced VisualAge Smalltalk Course Description This course provides advanced knowledge and experience in IBM's VisualAge Smalltalk programming language. Participants design and implement the user interface, controller, and domain model layers of a typical application architecture. This comprehensive project continues with exception handling, performance monitoring, and team development. The course also covers design patterns, change notification and multiprocessing. The course contains 40% lecture and 60% hands-on computer time. Audience Developers who will be designing and programming large-scale object-oriented applications in VisualAge for Smalltalk Prerequisites Successful completion of the VisualAge for Smalltalk course, or six months of VisualAge for Smalltalk programming experience Course Topics

Mission Software Has created a Smalltalk compiler for the Java Virtual Machine. This compiler allows Smalltalk to run on any JVM. The compiler currently produces 100% Java class files fully compatible with the Sun Java Virtual Machine specification. This allows Smalltalk and Java code to interact seamlessly and allows Smalltalk programs to run anywhere Java runs!

The History of Smalltalk and Squeak
Today's IT industry is developing and selling lots of new hardware and software technologies. People are now able to buy and use small personal devices with a modern and rich user interface experience. We use operating systems like Windows, MacOS or Linux and graphical computer interaction in our daily work. Did you know that the roots of these technologies are directly related to a single programming language called Smalltalk?
Smalltalk was developed in the Learning Research Group (LRG) at Xerox's Palo Alto Research Center back in the early 70s. The group was led by Alan Kay who worked on a vision he called "Dynabook" - the computer could be used creatively like a dynamic book. even by children. Their explorations led them to develop not only the prescient vision of notebook computing (the Dynabook), but also to the Smalltalk object-oriented programming language. The first Smalltalk programming system (called Smalltalk-72) run on a ""and was designed to support Alan Kay's new programming paradigm called object-oriented programming.
One persistent myth about the work of Xerox in this era is that PARC invented the mouse and graphical user interface (GUI). The mouse was invented by Doug Engelbart and others at the Augmentation Research Center (ARC); the GUI has its roots in systems such as Sketchpad, Grail, and ARC's NLS. What Kay and others accomplished involved striking improvements on these elements. They invented elements of the interface now so natural that we take them for granted—for instance, overlapping windows.

Where Smalltalk Went Wrong 2
I got a couple reactions to my last post . As I said, it was half baked, which is to say that I didn't know my conclusion when I started writing the post, and I didn't rewrite everything that came ealier once I realized my conclusion. So they labelled me uninformed, rather than merely disorganized. I did a fair amount of Smalltalk programming at one time when I was in school. I drank the Kool Aid, I understood the philosophy, I read the literature. I only used Squeak , and I am aware that other systems offer more tools. Those other systems are all proprietary, and sadly the Smalltalk community (for the most part) is not a Free Software kind of community. I'm sure cool Open Source things happen (and Squeak is certainly cool), but all the most advanced (most "modern") features seem to be proprietary. Maybe it's not fair to dismiss them because of that. But I am not fair and I dismiss them because of that. And I offer no apologies for this. Now, working back from my conclusions:

A class also contains references to behaviors (methods) that let you change or simply read its instance variables. Typically an object is a concrete instantiation, that is, member of a class. An object is a specific instance of a class, and has its own set of instance variables. Sometimes classes have behavior and data sufficient to make them do concrete things on their own without instances. Normally a class functions as a template; an object belonging to that class has real values for the class data.

    The Sordid Truth
    By Kirk Chase, Editor, MacTutor
Dave Wilson Personal Concepts Palo Alto, CA 94306
MacTutor has been running a lot of articles about programming with objects lately, covering everything from MacApp. the THINK Class Library, and other goodies. This coverage is great, since it reflects the rapidly growing interest in object programming on the Mac, and on any other platform that requires us to support a graphical user interface. Since the Dr. likes NextStep, but does not like MacApp, perhaps a comparison is in order. A good object-oriented development system consists of the following parts: Comments: Apple also developed a visual programming language using Smalltalk. It is called Fabrik, and was shown at the 1988 OOPSLA conference in San Diego. I suspect that it may never be released as a product because Smalltalk is difficult to use to develop small, stand-alone applications. What Apple has done is bring Smalltalk programming tools like the code browsers and object inspectors to MacApp, so they are at least learning from the ideas in the great Smalltalk programming environment.

    Abstract:
When faced with a shortage of Smalltalk programming skills, the IBM Lab at Research Triangle Park, North Carolina worked with North Carolina State University to find a solution. What resulted was a joint program for Smalltalk object oriented education centered around sound engineering and project work. That program now running for over two years has been continually improved by evaluating each semester's results and making appropriate changes. IBM's direct involvement as an industry sponsor included the development of course materials, classroom instruction and project mentoring. This involvement provided IBM engineers firsthand experiences with the students and allowed them to work effectively with NC State to adjust the program. This approach has proved successful in overcoming this technology's steep learning curve, providing students with a foundation of object oriented skills. The program has created an effective combination of an industry's skill needs and the university's goal of providing a solid engineering education. We believe it could serve as a model for other companies that have specific education and skill requirements.
    Introduction
The IBM facility in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina builds software development tools and develops object oriented technologies based on the Smalltalk programming language. IBM was facing a short supply of skilled Smalltalk programmers, both for its needs and the rapidly growing demand of its customers.
