Small Business Columnist Started Three of Them source: PR Newswire
published : June 20, 2005
The author of the most widely distributed small business column in the U.S. is the voice of experience, having started three successful small companies. "I have a real passion for small business," says Rhonda Abrams of USATODAY.COM. "Anything I can do to help them I'm eager to do." Abrams reaches 13 million readers through "Small Business Strategies," which runs Friday on the Money page of USATODAY.COM and in 130 Gannett newspapers. "It's mostly a 'how-to' advice column on small business issues," says Abrams. "My goal is to help entrepreneurs succeed in running and growing their business." A business management consultant and the author of five books on small business topics, Abrams started writing for Gannett in 1992. "I target my column to the 25-employees-and-under kind of business. But it's not limited to that. It's not just start-ups because I write on topics like dealing with employees and large corporate clients." Previous columns have focused on customer service; business negotiating; interest rates; cold calling; and how small businesses can use gift cards. She'll write about business travel once or twice a year and technology for small businesses about once a quarter.

Got e-mail manners? See these dos and don'ts
By Joanna L. Krotz Business pros now spend about two hours a day managing their e-mail, according to recent surveys. That adds up to plenty of time to get into serious trouble. Related Links E-mail etiquette for wireless devices: 7 tips How to unleash the power of e-mail signatures The e-mail you save can be held against you Why you need a company policy on Internet use ... Online seminars and business events in your area "Ineffective, improper and incorrect use of electronic e-mail on company computers exposes organizations to wasted time, bad press, and the possibility of legal action," notes Al Borowski, a recognized expert in e-mail etiquette who runs a Pittsburgh-based communications training firm, Connect All the Dots. It's hard to oversee the rush of e-mails that rocket in and out of your shop. Yet one wrong, ill-thought-out message is all it takes. Hit "send" and — poof. Irretrievable. Unless you clearly communicate standards and monitor your company's e-mail, there's a good chance e-mail miscues will happen — and come back to bite you.

Venture Capital Financing

Venture Capital Financing
Some Considerations Prior to Seeking Venture Capital (VC) Financing
Appropriateness of Seeking VC Financing
  • VCs tend to invest in high technology ventures. VCs are less interested in financing start-up firms than in financing established, ongoing firms in which they can invest at least $5M.
    • VCs put a very small percentage of their funds into seed capital for start-up firms. In such cases, the VC investment is usually at least $2M. Start-up firms typically require smaller amounts of capital and thus do not meet a $5M minimum VC investment threshold. Start-up firms require more VC business counsel; the limited number of VC partners provides a natural limit on the number of startups in which VCs can invest.
