Education History: Prehistoric times to the Nineteenth Century From Prehistoric Times to the Celts The Slovene territory was inhabited in prehistoric times and there is evidence of human habitation around 250,000 years ago. Perhaps the most important find is a flute discovered in Divje babe above the Idrija valley, dating from the Wurm glacial age when the area was inhabited by Neanderthals. In the late Stone and Bronze Ages, the inhabitants of the area were engaged in livestock rearing and farming. During the transition from the Bronze to the Iron Age, the Urnfield culture existed in this region. Fortified hilltop settlements and beautifully crafted iron objects and weapons were typical of the Hallstatt period. In the 4th and 3rd centuries BCE, present-day Slovenia was occupied by Celtic tribes. They formed the first state, called Noricum, which was annexed by the Roman Empire around 10 BCE.

Grand Hotel Toplice through the ages
A hotel was built on the shores of Lake Bled where thermal springs had been discovered and where a bath had been built subsequently. The hotel was bought by Jože Luckmann, who named the hotel Luisenbad after his wife Luisa.
The hotel flourished under the ownership of count Camillo Eichelburg. It was renovated and extended, giving it three floors, 40 rooms and a arge glazed veranda.
The Luisenbad Hotel was sold to the renowned chef Gustav Valtriny. His wife Fanny was an expert in hotel management.
Valtriny built the Schweizerhaus in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, which is known today as the Trst Hotel. There was a shop on the lower floor, catering for all the need of tourists at that time.
A brochure of the Luisenbad Hotel from 1894 reveals that the hotel featured thermal baths, as well as a post and telegraph office, an oriental coffee house with billiards, a casino, and boat hire on the lake. The hotel was a popular meeting point for the elite, and was visited by the King of Serbia and his entourage.

Slovenia (Slovenija), country on the Balkan Peninsula, south of Austria and east of Italy. The total area is 20,253 sq km (7820 sq mi). The capital and largest city is Ljubljana. The population of Slovenia is approximately 2 million, most of whom are ethnic Slovenes, a Slavic group. Minority groups include Serbs, Croats, and various refugees from the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Education is compulsory, and almost all Slovenes can read. The official language is Slovenian. Most people in Slovenia are Roman Catholic. There is a sizable industrial base and skilled workforce involved in electronics, electrical machinery, processed metal, and motor vehicles. Agriculture is only a small part of the economy. Tourism is of increasing importance. The unit of currency is the Slovenian tolar (or SIT), 1000 SIT = $4.18 US. Slovenia is mountainous (The highest mountain is called Triglav - the name meaning "three-headed" - and is 2864 m high), with heavy forests. The climate varies from warm along the coast of the Adriatic Sea to moderate on the eastern plateaus. Coal is the most abundant natural resource - others include metals, natural gas, and petroleum. Under the 1991 constitution, the chief of the state is the president (Milan KUCAN since April 22, 1990), elected to a five-year term. The head of government is the prime minister (Janez DRNOVSEK since May 14, 1992) , elected to a four-year term by a vote of the State Assembly, which is part of the parliament. The 90 National Assembly (or Drzavni Zbor) members serve four-year terms. National Council (or Drzavni Svet) is an advisory body with limited legislative powers; it may propose laws and ask to review any National Assembly decisions; in the election of NA November 1997, 40 members were elected to represent local, professional, and socioeconomic interests

In 1922, a meeting of an important political and sporting movement of Yugoslavia and some other European Countries, called "Sokoli" (Falcons), took place in Ljubljana. Scouting was established in Slovenia in 1922. It was officially dissolved on June 10th, 1941 because of World War II. The World Organization of the Scout Movement welcomed Slovenia into its membership in September 1994. Zveza Tabornikov Slovenije (ZTS) has been recognized as the national member organization of Slovenia. The enthusiastic young girls and boys of the Slovenian contingent at the European Jamboree impressed everyone with the quality of their Scouting skills. This reflects very well on the training being provided to all members of the Movement in Slovenia. Zveza Tabornikov Slovenije is a recognized member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement since September 1994. As the recognized national Scout organization in Slovenia ZTS guarantees the rights of WOSM membership which this bestows upon an individual to the members of another Slovenian Scout organization, Zdruzenje Slovenskih Katoliskih Skavtinj in Skavtov (ZSKSS), founded in 1990). This enables individual members of ZSKSS to participate in international Scout events and meetings.

History and Government
History: Local resistance, initially from non-communist nationalists, was hijacked by the Yugoslav Communist Party led by Josip Broz Tito, himself partly of Slovene origin. In 1945, after the communists emerged as victors, Slovenia became a constituent republic of the new Yugoslav federation. The ruling League of Communists of Slovenia (LCS) supported the Croats in the demand for an effectively confederal Yugoslavia during the 1960s and 1970s, although never to the point of provoking Tito into repression, as took place in Croatia in 1971. Among other things, this caution made a relatively liberal political atmosphere in Slovenia possible, culminating in a pluralist ‘Slovene Spring’ after Milan Kucan became LCS leader in 1986. The nationalist Kucan steered Slovenia towards independence following multi-party National Assembly elections in April 1990 which brought to power a six-party centre-right coalition, calling itself DEMOS, led by Premier Lozle Peterle. After 14 months, during which both Slovenia and Croatia became increasingly alienated from Belgrade, Slovenia declared independence. The central Government immediately sent in armoured convoys to take control of federal border posts and key installations in the capital Ljubljana. The army was clearly not expecting the resistance put up by well-prepared Slovene irregulars and after a few weeks of sporadic and largely inconclusive fighting, a ceasefire was reached. By October 1991, all federal military forces had left the republic, and Slovenia proclaimed its independence on 8 October. Full international recognition followed in January 1992, after which the DEMOS Government collapsed, having achieved its sole objective of securing international recognition.
