Services British Czech and Slovak Association This section gives details of the activities undertaken by the BCSA and explains how to join What the BCSA does The activities performed by the BCSA are best described in the report by our Chairman, Sir Michael Burton, to the Annual Meeting in April 2005. Introduction Once again 2004 was a very active year. In addition to our normal activities a group from the Association paid a successful visit to Slovakia in September. We also held another successful Prize Writing Competition and gave a new look to the BCSA website. Events The year started with our veteran member Matej Schwitzer giving his account of “Turning Points in Slovak History” illustrated by a fascinating mixture of pre-war and contemporary slides of his native country. A literary event followed in February when Lucia Faltin expertly interviewed two of our members about their work: Annette Kobak (“Joe’s War: My Father Decoded”) and Roger Darlington (“Night Hawk”) revealed the sometimes difficult but rewarding process of researching their personal histories. After the AGM in April two more of our members, David Short and Michael Ivory were interrogated by Zuzana Slobodova on “What is the Attraction?” an examination of the reasons why certain Englishmen seem to be obsessed with the countries of former Czechoslovakia. Then in May, in connection with other events celebrating renewed interest in the Bata operation in East Tilbury, Sir John Tusa presented the film “Shoemakers to the World” to a capacity audience.
