Introduction
... Transnational Issue Introduction Slovakia Background: In 1918 the Slovaks joined the closely related Czechs to form Czechoslovakia. Following the chaos of World War II, Czechoslovakia became a Communist nation within Soviet-ruled Eastern Europe. Soviet influence collapsed in 1989 and Czechoslovakia once more became free. The Slovaks and the Czechs agreed to separate peacefully on 1 January 1993. Slovakia was invited to join NATO and the EU in 2002. Bush met the leader of Slovenia, not Slovakia. Source: Knight Ridder News Service, June 22, 1999. If Slovakia and geography in Central Europe in general seem to confuse you, you're not alone. As the quote above attests even US President George W. Bush had some learning to do in this area. And so, these set of questions and answers are meant to orient individuals with very little knowledge about Slovakia.

    Culture: Synopsis Featured Exhibitions
Historical Cultural Synopsis The emergence of culture and of Slovak national literature came late. Elements of the Slovakian spoken language appeared in literary texts during the centuries preceding the 18th century, but Anton Bernolák (1762-1813) was the first who attempted to create a literary language. Bernolák's language was used by two talented writers, Jozef Ignác Bajza (1755-1836), the author of the first Slovakian novel, and the famous classical poet Ján Hollý (1785-1849), who wrote his epic poems in alexandrine verse in order to prove the Slovakian language malleable enough to be equal to complicated forms of ancient poetry. 19th Century This language, based on the dialect from central Slovakia, was adopted by the entire nation. Inspired by the Helegian philosophy, he developed the concept of Slovakian romanticism, whose main characteristics are the pre-eminence of patriotic thought and the attachment to popular traditions. During the difficult period of forced "Hungary-isation" that followed the missed revolution of 1948, a few writers endeavoured to maintain the morale of a population progressively stripped of its' culture.

GEOGRAPHY OF THE CZECH REPUBLIC AND SLOVAKIA Located in the land-locked heart of Europe, the Czech and Slovak Republics together comprise a relatively narrow territory that stretches lengthwise from west to east-southeast. The Czech lands border Germany to the west while Slovakia reaches to the southwestern edge of the Ukraine on its eastern border. Poland borders both republics in the north, while Austria dominates the southern border of the Czech lands and part of Slovakia's western frontier. Hungary shares the majority of Slovakia's southern border. To put these two Eastern-European countries into geographical perspective, Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, lies west and north of Vienna, putting it in the geographic center of the European continent. Slovakia's capital, Bratislava, is bisected by the Danube River, which also flows through Vienna and Budapest, putting Bratislava on an important and historical trading route. Of the Czech and Slovak lands, the Czech topography is the gentler of the two, with predominantly rolling hills and a few flat areas. Slovakia boasts more rugged terrain. The spectacular Tatra and Carpathian mountain ranges provide many outdoor recreation opportunities for skiers and hikers.
