Professional theatre
The Slovak National Theatre is the oldest Slovak professional theatre. It has 3 ensembles (drama, opera and ballet). It was founded in after the creation of Czechoslovakia as a cooperative and turned into a state-run company in 1945. Between 1920 and 1945 there was also a musicale ensemble. The Slovak National Theatre has been representing Slovak culture on its numerous tours abroad. It was created and in the 1920s also run by Czech artists (e.g. Oskar Nedbal was the director in 1923-1930). The first performance was the Czech opera Hubička by Bedřich Smetana on March 1 . The ensembles were slovakized only gradually. In 1932, the drama ensemble split into the

By helping to expand Slovakia's economy through US investment, Slovak ex-patriates can provide more opportunity for Slovakia's young people to make a successful life for themselves and their families. Many Slovak-American organisations are very interested in helping the younger generations in America understand and appreciate their Slovak heritage and the contributions that Slovaks have made in the United States, said Jan Eric Surotchak, chair of the Friends of Slovakia (FOS). The Slovak Spectator (TSS) Do you feel that Slovakia is forthcoming enough towards its ex-patriates, who in fact have the potential to help improve the country's image abroad? Jan Eric Surotchak (JES): Friends of Slovakia has always had an excellent relationship with the representatives of the Slovak Government in Washington, as well as with a number of the ministries in Bratislava, and it has been able to accomplish a number of its own projects primarily because of these close links. It's clear to me that the Slovak government is working very hard to overcome lost time in communicating Slovakia's success story, at least in the United States. TSS: Do you feel that the bodies representing the Slovak community in the USA have done a good job in representing the interests of the community?

FROM THE EDITOR
As of next issue since it costs now CAD$1.60 to mail one newsletter to Slovakia, we will be sending our newsletter to Slovakia only to members with paid subscription as we simply can’t afford the luxury of sending newsletters to Slovakia for free anymore. So most of the Slovak recipients have been deleted from our mailing list as well as all the nonpaying members in North America and the World with memberships expired in 1998 and this is your last issue if your membership expired in 1999. If your membership expired in year 2000 and you like to continue getting your newsletter, then I strongly urge you to renew as soon as possible since the summer issue will be your last as we will delete all members with their memberships expired in 2000...

SVU CZECHOSLOVAK SOCIETY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES Executive Board Meeting - December 11, 2004
SVU Executive Board held its third regular meeting on December 11, 2004 in SVU President Mila Rechcigl?s house in Rockville, MD. Nine members were in attendance, more than enough to have quorum. In the absence of Secretary General F. Safertal, V.P. Zdenek David was appointed Recording Secretary.
The meeting was opened with congratulation to Rev. Michael Rokos for his appointment as the new President of the American Friends of the Czech Republic (AFoCR).
Several changes have been made on the Board, including the appointment of Miroslav Wlachovsky as a new Vice President and Vlado Simko as Executive Vice President.
For the benefit of new members, Rechcigl went over the modus operandi of the Board, stressing the importance of attending the meetings and responding to e-mail messages in a timely manner.
The SVU Mission Statement was distributed among the members with the request that the Board members go over it so that it can be approved at the next meeting. VP Simko will add a paragraph regarding the SVU?s Accent on Youth. Apart from the ongoing efforts, Rechcigl enumerated several SVU new priorities and specific tasks for the current administrative period, including: searching for new SVU leaders; reactivation of dormant local chapters and establishment of the new ones; fostering cooperation with CR and SR on institutional level; encouraging publications of more English titles relating to Czech and Slovak culture; fostering the preservation of Czech and Slovak heritage abroad; developing a new sub-site of the SVU Website relating to the interests of students and young people, generally; and enhancing SVU visibility through increased publicity, press releases, etc.

CULTURE Literature Folk Art Folk arts and crafts, which include wood carving, fabric weaving, and glass painting, have a long and popular tradition in Slovakia, especially in rural areas. Examples of folk architecture, such as wooden churches and brightly painted houses, are found throughout the country, particularly in the Ukrainian communities of Eastern Slovakia. The development of folk art and crafts developed throughout Slovak history which is documented by the abundant archaeological findings on its' national territory. These findings were composed of tools and artefacts - over time, these useful objects became more and more refined and thus became what we call today's folk art. The tradition of folk art and crafts has been handed down through the generations and is supported by ULUV, The Centre for Folk Art Production. Since 1954 ULUV's expositions have shown throughout 28 countries. Fine Art and Architecture Slovak modern art is influenced both by Slovakian folklore and European art and is represented today by numerous artistic associations.

Rusyn'ska Obroda Editorial Staff Reports on State of Rusyn Press in Slovakia Thanks to Rich Custer for providing the information! Will We Celebrate the Next Anniversary? We are celebrating the fifth anniversary of our newspaper. This short period was characterized by eventful development. The editorial staff had to start from scratch: in a basement room of the Aleksander Duchnovic Theatre in Presov, with borrowed office furniture, typewriters, without a penny, and without any salary for the editors for several months, without any subscribers or readers... The enormous effort of the editorial staff during the first two demanding years of 1991 and 1992 brought about positive results, and the newspaper experienced its most prosperous period in 1993 and 1994. These years were characterized by a defined profile of the newspaper as a basis for the cultivation and devleopment of the Rusyn language, and its codification. The newspaper became a medium bringing the Rusyns in Slovakia information from their region and about themselves. It meant a significant contribution to the process of rebirth of the Rusyn national spirit, the revival of the Rusyn people

General Collections
The Library of Congress is considered to be the best repository of Czech and Slovak books, periodicals and other reading materials outside the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The monographs and bound periodicals relating to the culture of the Czechs and Slovaks amount to ca. 115,000 items, with the yearly acquisitions of monographs averaging ca. 1,500 over the last 10 years. The LC has about 2,000 Czech and Slovak periodicals, of which ca. 600 are currently received, and more than 170 Czech and Slovak newspapers, with 14 titles currently received. It is estimated that about 80 percent of all these materials are in Czech or Slovak, English being the predominant language of the rest. While the Czech and Slovak collections in the LC are generally good, they are especially strong for books and periodicals published after 1945. This is due to the fact that after 1945 monographs and periodicals published in Czechoslovakia (now the Czech and Slovak Republics) were purchased by LC on the basis of a blanket order.
