Slovakia Plants and Animal Back to Top 43 % of Slovakia is forested. Species of fir and spruce are common in most mountain areas. At lower elevations, oaks, birches, and lindens predominate. Slovakia’s forests are home to foxes, rabbits, squirrels, weasels, and muskrats; wild boar and wolves are occasionally seen in remote mountain areas. Wildlife stocks have been diminishing in Slovakia, due to pollution, urbanization, and deforestation. Slovakia Communications Back to Top
modernization and privatization program is increasing accessibility to telephone service, reducing the waiting time for new subscribers, and generally improving service quality
domestic: predominantly an analog system that is now receiving digital equipment and is being enlarged with fiber-optic cable, particularly in the larger cities; mobile cellular capability has been added
international: three international exchanges (one in Bratislava and two in Banska Bystrica) are available; Slovakia is participating in several international telecommunications projects that will increase the availability of external services
Slovakia Culture Back to Top The antecedents of a distinct Slovak culture date from the mission sent to Moravia in AD 863 by the Byzantine emperor Michael III at the request of the Moravian prince Rostislav; the Moravian state then encompassed at least part of the territory of present-day Slovakia. Byzantine determine was short-lived, disappearing from the region after the invasions by nomadic Magyar tribes toward the end of the 9th century. The South Slavs were separated from the Slavs living north of the Danube River, and, as the territory of Slovakia came under Magyar control, it became known as Upper Hungary.

65. Culture Of Peace
the fulfilment of man s dream A World of Peace. By Massimo Trombin MagdaBalentova Directors of the IRFF project The culture of Peace slovakia 1999
http://irff-europe.org/project/culturepeace.htm
    - Culture of Peace Peace is in our hands
"Since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds of men that the defence of peace must be constructed." This principle, found in the preamble of the UNESCO constitution, was the motto of the first day of the IRFF international volunteers camp. The theme of the camp was"The Culture of Peace" and it was organised in Slovakia from 16th to 25th July 1999.
26 volunteers representing 12 different countries and three continents gathered in the historical village of "S ahy" situated on the Slovak - Hungarian border. One of the purposes of their gathering was to join local professionals in the archaeological research of a medieval monastery located in Sahy.
This was also a pilot project for IRFF, an event with emphasis on the Friendship characteristics of IRFF. The cultural element of the program and the project "Culture of Peace" fulfilled the goal of more emphasis of cross-cultural friendship. The IRFF staff, together with the participants, can be called a laboratory for an experiment in friendships across cultural boundaries, and from the outcome we can safely say that it was a success.
The days of the camp where divided into several sections. The first two days focused on orientation and education, after which followed 5 days of work, and the last day was reserved for reflection and the closing ceremony. On Friday evening at the opening ceremony, welcoming remarks and a presentation on the topics of the history of the Sahy area and UNESCO works in Slovakia was given by Ms Dvorakova. She is the Vice-director of the Slovak National Institute of Monuments Preservation and a member of the UNESCO National Commission in Slovakia.

In Slovak Republic approximately 90 % of artists need to resort to other forms of gainful employment. As forms of financially better jobs only business activities can be mentioned, e. g. running one’s own art agency, recording studio, work abroad. Teaching is one of the jobs which are regularly taken up by artists, though it cannot be said that it is a financially better job.

Chapter 20: Culture and audio-visual policy
Progress since the last Regular Report
Slovakia has taken steps to participate in the Media Plus and Media Training Community programmes as of 2003.
Overall assessment
Significant progress has been made in strengthening the administrative and budgetary capacity of the Council for Broadcasting and Retransmission. Slovakia is a party to the Council of Europe Convention on Transfrontier Television and its amending protocol.
Conclusion
In its 1997 Opinion, the Commission concluded that, provided that the necessary legislative measures are pursued with sufficient urgency and are accompanied by the necessary structural adaptations of the industry, it was reasonable to expect that Slovakia should be able to meet EC requirements in the audio-visual sector in the medium term. Since the Opinion, Slovakia has made considerable progress, and has reached, overall, an advanced level both in terms of legislative alignment and administrative capacity. The necessary administrative structures are in place.

Slovakia
The cultural picture of Slovakia is influenced by its geographical situation at the heart of Europe. Slovakia is an integral part of the cultural entity of Central Europe, the foundations of which were laid by numerous nations and ethnic groups; it has been a point of convergence for German, Austrian, Hungarian and Slavic cultures for centuries. The Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are the central authorities of the state administration dealing with governmental international cultural cooperation. Within the framework of its competences, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs carries out primary and secondary cultural activities.
The financing of culture including international cooperation is based on the funds of the Ministries of Culture and Foreign Affairs, on regional and local communities, and on private sources. The Ministry of Culture is responsible for multilateral cooperation in the cultural field. The Ministry is also responsible for the monitoring and administration of treaties and agreements, following the policies of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and it supports the cultural projects of Slovak communities abroad.

2) SUMMARY
In its Opinion of July 1997 , the European Commission expressed the view that fuller information was required on the legislative situation in the audiovisual sector in Slovakia. However, provided that the appropriate legislative measures were pursued with sufficient urgency and accompanied by the requisite structural adjustment of the industry, Slovakia should be able to meet EC requirements in the audiovisual sector in the medium term. The November 1998 Report confirmed that Slovakia needed to make further efforts to align its legislation with the acquis The October 1999 Report noted that no progress had been made in this sector and that Slovakia's legislation was still not in conformity with the

The Schola Cantorum Choir which belongs to the Conservatorio Provincial de Música de Bahía Blanca (Argentina) was created in 1989 and since then is conducted by Nicolás Saveanu. The main group of the choir is formed by conservatory students. The repertoire is mainly classical music. We are a small chamber choir which inclines us towards Renaissance music.
In the spring of 1996 we started to rehearse a piece by Béla Bartók, the 'Four Slovak Folk Songs'. They are based on songs Bartók recorded in one of his musicological tours in Slovakia.
The pronounciation was studied, the songs were rehearsed and performed. Finally the recordings were sent to Ondro and here they are. We know they are far from perfect but we would like other people to share a part of this experience with Ondro and us. Wedding Song from Poniky - in both and kbs Real Audio* format

An oak rocking chair that President John F. Kennedy used to rest his bad back sold for $96,000 (75,223) to an anonymous telephone bidder Tuesday at the opening of a three-day auction of property from the Kennedy family's homes. The bidding at Sotheby's showroom was brisk, with many lots selling for 10 to 20 times their presale estimates. For whatever reason, I've always been fascinated with Kennedy,» said Doug Ellis of Princeton, New Jersey, who paid $1,560 (1,222) for a pair of brass candlesticks from the Kennedys' home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts. «I probably have 600 books about the Kennedys.» The auction, which took in $1.7 million (1.33 million) Tuesday, was expected to be more modest in scope than a 1996 Kennedy sale at Sotheby's that brought in $34.5 million (27 million), including $2.5 million (1.96 million) for Jacqueline Kennedy's engagement ring from Aristotle Onassis.

Korean TV is coming to Slovak cable
Wed 18 Aug 04, 17:11 RSI Broadcasting of the South Korean TV channel Arirang in Slovakia could become the first bridge between the Slovak and Korean cultures. Slovak Culture Minister Rudolf Chmel and the deputy speaker of the National assembly of the Korean republic, Park Hee Tae, came to this conclusion at their Tuesday's meeting. Apart from broadcasting to Slovakia the TV station is also interested in presentation of Slovak culture in South Korea. Cultural cooperation of the two countries could follow cooperation in the economic area, which develops especially thanks to the investments of the companies Samsung and Kia in Slovakia. The South Korean TV station Arirang has been in the program offer of the largest Slovak cable TV operator in Bratislava and in Kosice since June 1. Arirang TV station broadcast 24 hours a day different kinds of programs from news, travel and music, education and language programs to films of Korean production. The decision of the cable TV company was motivated by the fact that approximately 900 South Koreans with families should soon come to Slovakia, since a Kia car plant should be built here. There are already South Korean employees and management in Slovakia, most notably in Samsung.
