Slovak Culture
Culture: Synopsis Featured Exhibitions
Historical Cultural Synopsis The emergence of culture and of Slovak national literature came late. Elements of the Slovakian spoken language appeared in literary texts during the centuries preceding the 18th century, but Anton Bernolák (1762-1813) was the first who attempted to create a literary language. Bernolák's language was used by two talented writers, Jozef Ignác Bajza (1755-1836), the author of the first Slovakian novel, and the famous classical poet Ján Hollý (1785-1849), who wrote his epic poems in alexandrine verse in order to prove the Slovakian language malleable enough to be equal to complicated forms of ancient poetry. 19th Century This language, based on the dialect from central Slovakia, was adopted by the entire nation. Inspired by the Helegian philosophy, he developed the concept of Slovakian romanticism, whose main characteristics are the pre-eminence of patriotic thought and the attachment to popular traditions. During the difficult period of forced "Hungary-isation" that followed the missed revolution of 1948, a few writers endeavoured to maintain the morale of a population progressively stripped of its' culture.

Defamatory anti-Slovak inscriptions appeared in Bekescsaba, the center of the Slovak ethnic minority in Hungary, in the night of Saturday after insulting signs were found in Bratislava and Kosice, east Slovakia, earlier this week, Slovak Radio reported today. The director of the Slovak Culture House in Bekescsaba told the radio that she had found sprayed swastikas and huge inscriptions in Hungarian reading "Nazi Slovaks," "Slovaks- fascists" and "Victims of Slovak fascists" on the walls of the house which also shelters a branch office of the Slovak consulate this morning. "The inscription on another building is so obscene that it cannot be sent into the air," the radio reporter said. Neither the Slovak Culture House director nor the town's Hungarian vice-mayor have knowledge of any such event having occurred in one and a half centuries of the two nations' coexistence in the town. The Bekescsaba mayor said that the hooliganism had not had political background and that it was rather a case for a doctor.

Slovak society suffers from many of the problems found commonly in developed Western societies. Crime, prostitution, and drug abuse increased after 1989, when the Communist government collapsed, political controls were lifted, and borders were reopened. Poverty has also increased, particularly among single mothers and the elderly. In recent years, tensions have mounted between the Slovak government and Hungarians residing in Slovakia. Many Hungarians have complained of discrimination and have pressed for educational and cultural autonomy in addition to the right to use Hungarian as their official language. Tensions have also increased at the local level in areas populated by both Slovaks and ethnic Hungarians.

It is based in Bratislava, published weekly and available on-line at www.slovakspectator.sk Spectacular Slovakia is an annual publication started in 1995. It is the only travel guide on Slovakia created by native English speakers who live here. We tell you what's in halušky and why the Slovak Paradise national park is well named. We are eager to see more tourists go beyond Bratislava and secretly glad to have Slovakia's smaller cities, mining towns, villages, pubs, churches, mountains, forests, waterfalls, skanzeny and ski trails practically to ourselves. In nine years, we've evolved from a straight forward travel guide to a travel guide and travel magazine hybrid, to this year in-depth look at Slovak culture. We added notes on what travel in Slovakia feels like, updating and expanding our traditional travel guide section and consolidating articles on Slovak culture and history. Photography has been one constant all along. The Spectacular, which comes in magazine form, had more than 200 photographs in 2004, about four photographs for every three pages of text. We think we're the best place to read about Slovakia. We know we're the best place - outside Banská Štiavnica or the High Tatras - to look at it.

Slovakia is a country simply rich in history and culture. This section of the web site begins by looking at the History of Slovakia, covering Slovak history from the time of the Samo Empire until the present day. In Famous Slovaks, we look at many of the great Slovak people that played their part in forming the country that Slovakia is today. These Slovaks also contributed a lot to the world, in terms of art, music, literature, poetry, science, mathematics, politics and sport. In "A Traditional Slovak Calendar" you can learn about the Slovak beliefs, legends and customs from the past. These legends and customs are described within the context of traditional feastdays throughout the calendar year. In Slovakia, tradition is also kept alive in the form of music and dance. Music is popular throughout Slovakia, so we have included a section dedicated to Slovak Folk Music.
