Whizzing O'er the Snow
GORP's Tips for Sledding Safety
By Alice Cary , GORP Family Expert As a kid, I loved to sled. There was nothing better than an afternoon on a snowy slope with some soap-coated metal runners and my friends. Now, as a parent, my outlook has changed. I love to see my kids sled, but there's always a part of me cringing, waiting for that dreaded collision.
Have fun, but play it safe Any parents can imagine the numerous pitfalls. Every year thousands of kids are injured during sledding accidents. More often than not, the scrapes and pains are minor, but sometimes they are serious, even fatal.
advertisement What can you do to ensure your sledding outings end with little more than wet seats and cold noses, instead of a trip to the emergency room? What the Doctors Say The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons has published guidelines, divided into two groups, the first of which they label"essential": Sled only in designated areas free of fixed objects such as trees, posts and fences.

Forest Lakes Area Sledding
Sledding is a popular attraction during the winter!
  • There are NOT any designated sledding areas nearby. We don't even suggest where sledding hills are due to all the safety concerns There are several forest hillsides that could provide fun sledding, but you need to find the sledding areas for yourselves Do not sled on other people's private property here in the subdivision! Do not sled on the roadways! Be smart and considerate, don't drive on un-plowed roads and please don't park on the narrow subdivision roads either! Don't pull a sled with a vehicle, ATV or snowmobile!!! We do not have any sled rentals here, but Camper's Country Store here in Forest Lakes has sleds for sale. Crashing into the snow can be part of the sledding fun, but be extra careful where you choose to sled! Look for obvious obstructions such as stumps, logs, trees, boulders and vehicles! Unfortunately every year the ambulance gets called out for head, back and leg injuries! Be sled-smart while having sledding fun!

167. Mahoosuc Guide Service Dogsledding And Canoeing In Maine, New Hampshire, Canada
Dog sledding trips in Maine, New Hampshire and Canada that include native guides and traditional equipment.
Mahoosuc Guide Service
Mahoosuc Guide Service is a small family run business with over twenty years of experience. All of our trips are owner guided and a high percentage of our clients are returning as friends. Polly and Kevin are professional year round guides, equally comfortable poling a canoe up the Allagash or driving a dog team across the sea ice of Hudson Bay. Mahoosuc is unique in that we make much of the equipment we use on our guided trips, such as cedar canvas canoes, ash dog sleds and maple paddles. We have found the traditional equipment and materials we use to be durable, functional and in many ways preferable to today's high technology outdoor equipment. The craftsmanship that goes into our equipment is an extension of the care we put into each of our trips. We have traveled extensively in the north with the Cree and Inuit and many of the techniques we use for northwoods and tundra travel were developed by them. Mahoosuc Guide Service offers a wide variety of activities for all seasons and levels of experience. Our trips are not a test of endurance. Although we travel a certain distance each day, ample time is available for natural history, exploring and relaxing. Group size is normally small, four to eight, to insure a quality experience and to accommodate individual interests. We believe in the intrinsic value of wilderness experiences. Our philosophy of guiding is to respect and accept the wilderness; not to compete against it. We provide our clients with the opportunity to learn about themselves while learning new skills and to become rejuvenated by experiencing life in more elemental terms. An additional benefit of our cultural trips is the opportunity to live and travel with a Native subsistence hunter's family through their ancestral homeland.

169. No Sledding Please
We realize that sledding in the formal gardens of Hampton is a longstanding tradition. The amount of damage done by sledding is unacceptable.
Why we ask you NOT to Sled at Hampton. In the photo above, you can see that many people sled directly into the boxwood plants. The damage to the walks and brick edging seen here cost money to repair. More important, they divert resources from more important preservation work. We realize that sledding in the formal gardens of Hampton is a longstanding tradition. We know it's fun. We like being a good neighbor. But… The amount of damage done by sledding is unacceptable. Repeatedly, we have found extensive damage to the boxwood in the gardens, and even to the brick walkways. This takes money and time to repair. In fact, boxwood grows approximately one inch per year. It may take as much as a decade for boxwood to recover from the most recent sledding damage. So, we're sorry to be spoilsports, but we must ask that you not sled in the gardens. These branches, broken by sledding, will
take at least a decade to regrow. Last Modified: Wednesday, 22-Dec-04 09:39:26
