Because of this trend, the heated skyscraper debate that was kindled in 1991 by Hans Kollhoff's draft plans for Potsdamer Platz and Alexanderplatz has cooled off. Actually a development plan now exists for Alexanderplatz, which envisages a whole family of tower blocks. But it has proved impossible to find an investor who is prepared to put more office space onto the market, bearing in mind that 1.5 million square metres of similar property is already standing empty. Even the 13 year-old Zoofenster project for a tower block containing offices and hotels near the Bahnhof Zoo, for which the plans are complete and planning permission has been granted, has been sold twice and is now on the market again before the first brick could even be laid. Indeed new high-rise buildings are regularly proposed, most recently one 250 metres high at the Kulturforum site. In Frankfurt am Main, the argument was resolved long ago, no-one questions the skyline any more, and when the

Most skyscrapers serve as office buildings or hotels . The term highrise is also used to describe tall buildings, but it tends to be applied specifically to residential buildings. Some structural engineers define a skyscraper as any vertical construction for which wind is a more significant load factor than weight Until the 19th century The development of steel reinforced concrete , and water pumps have made possible the construction of extremely tall buildings, some of which are well over 300 metres (987 ft) tall. The other development essential to practical skyscraper development was the invention of the

CAROL WILLIS, Form Follows Finance: Skyscrapers and Skylines in New York and Chicago. . New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1995, 217 pp., 170 illus. $35.00 cloth, ISBN 1-56898-070-1 $22.50 paper, ISBN 1-56898-044-2.
The skyscraper has been called "a proud and soaring thing," and it has been called a blight on cities, the source of urban evil. While both of these interpretations are valid, they focus on what the skyscraper is. Carol Willis, on the other hand, has focused on the economics of why the skyscraper is. While her discussion is specifically about skyscrapers, her analysis of how the design profession interacted with the nuts and bolts realities of clients, banks, and regulatory agencies says a great deal about the profession as a whole. I would like to see every architecture student read this book in their last year in school, not only because it is a great book on skyscrapers, but because it is also a great book about the architectural profession. Although Willis states that her book is not traditional architectural history (p. 14), the papers she delivered at the Society of Architectural Historians annual meetings in 1993 and 1994 generated such interest that listeners spilled out into the hallways straining to hear every fourth word. I would argue that what she has written is exactly what architectural history is: the study of architecture in its total context. Not that she has provided that total context. Rather, she has opened up an area of study that has long been neglected. In untraditional fashion, she declares in the introduction that she rarely names the architects, choosing "not to privilege the architects' role over that of others of the team," (p. 14) but as one reads through the text one is largely unaware of this stance: credit is given where credit is due.

(Photo credit: Max Joel) Y Skyscraper Museum happen right where such buildings first germinated in Manhattan and where, since September 11, 2001, the need for an institution like this approaches urgency. illusion skyscraper.org Identifying the origins of modernism is a notoriously elusive task, but in Shock of the Old: Christopher Dresser In Japan, Dresser visited ateliers to understand fabrication processes. In a series of art pottery displayed on the second floor, he sculpts vases in asymmetrical shapes, sometimes pinching them, and then ladles glazes that ooze with a lax beauty different from the highly stylized, overcontrolled patterns of his early work. Some glazes resemble the color-field paintings of Abstract Expressionists almost a century later. In his late textile designs, floral patterns of Art Nouveau fabrics sway in aqueous flotation. The liquid shapes of glass vases burst the girdle of symmetry: Bubbles in the diaphanous material effervesce, like frozen champagne.
